I made it but I think I should have used more water. They didn't roll out as big and they were soft but not flexible. I think they will turn out better next time. Thanks for the great ideas. Your tortillas look PERFECT. By the way buying these at the store cost over $2, so this is so good to make it yourself.
Specifically what kind of flour did you use type and brand. I have found that depending on the flour like you said some use more or less water, but when I follow the first couple steps I do not get the same consistancy with the flour and oil as you get, Mine ends up more dry than yours?
@watchingobserversee I used an off brand (Meijer) bleached all-purpose flour. If your dough is too dry just keep sprinkling more water and knead until smooth and soft :)
@watchingobserversee - the brand does'nt really matter. After you mix everything, the dough should be just under sticky, if too sticky just add half a handful of flour to dry it a bit, or if too dry add maybe 1/4 cup of water and remix, depends on how dry it is. When ur rolling the dough out it should just stick a bit. You can dust the counter with a little flour to keep it sliding. If it slips too much just flip it over.
PS. I use Whhite Wings flour myself. Also if the dough is kind of brittle looking, u might have used too much veggie oil. I did that when I was little and my tortillas came out stiff, lol. Mom had a kitty with that one!
@mimelodie I am not sure if you are "mel" who commented on my blog the other day. If so, I updated the "vegetarian lasagna recipe" with the written directions. I do not recommend covering the dough with a wet towel. However, I would suggest you to cook your tortillas on a lower heat it would help them stay softer. How is your dough after mixing up all the ingredients?
@mimelodie - You have to learn to add water instinctively. If you are coming up with dry dough then next time add more water, but you have to use very warm water. Adding cold water to the dough is gonna give u a headache. See note above for "watchingobserversee. Good luck!
@arenakitty - PS if you cover the dough with the towel, it's best if you wet the towel with warm or hot water. It keeps the humidity in. Iraerly use the towel myself because I am usually in a hurry. If enough water is in the mix, the difference is slight. I've been making torillas the old fashioned way since I was four and though I love the towel, it's not gonna kill ur tortillas or ruin them if you don't do it.
My wife and I tried your recipe and I thought it was good. They didn't bubble up quite so good though which I kinda resented. I have been trying to make tortillas they way I remember them as a child so I adapted your recipe slightly and we might have a winner. I used your recipe and adapted it with this one
homesicktexan blogspot com 2007 03 and-end-to-my-quest-flour-tortillas
which essentially means I added a little whole milk a little more salt and also a little less oil.
@ourTTCjourney oil from the batter is attracted to the heat of melts on to the bottom the same way as pancake batter does'nt stick (all modern pans have either a teflon coat on the bottom of the pan so they don't stick )
i just tried it. it went fluffy =(

I made this recipe but my tortillas always come out dry and not pliable.Should I cover the balls with a wet towel when they are sitting?

When you cook them in the pan is there any cooking spray or anything on the pan or nothing at all? Cant wait to try this!
ourTTCjourney 8 months ago
@ourTTCjourney no you don't need to grease the pan when cooking them. They have enough oil in them so they don't stick!
