I mean, seriously, there has to be a scroll plate in there, for one thing, to keep the wedge-leaves in position and in sync, and mated to a screw to lift the inner leaves and center portion. Just getting the mechanics to work would be a considerable challenge, and then getting to operate smoothly, by hand, and then making it all out of wood...I tip my cap to whomever made this.
