Retton was a world class vaulter- likely would have medalled there- she had a shot at bronnze in the AA and the US team had a shot at bronze over East Germany- they weren't that strong in 84 and a weaker US team technically beat them in 88 (if not for the fued between Karoli and Berger- penalized US .5 for a team member standing in the wrong place/too near the equipment during a bar routine...)
@demc67 Completely correct, the East German 1984 team would not have surpassed a US team home court advantage. The US team in a full Olympics would have had Dianne Durham so they would have actually challenged Rumania for silver, and would have won medals in UB, V and FX and quite possibly beam also. And Mary Lou Retton would probably made the AA podium also.
I think the East Germans would have factored in for vaulting-remember Retton's compulsory vault would also have counted and many could do it equally well or better than Retton.
Looks like I offended someone with my comment, although I certainly didn't mean to. I just meant that Retton was one of the greatest vaulters ever--along with Shushunova--and that the Soviets, Romanians, etc. were at the top on the other events.
I could not agree with you more. Top ten-only with the 3 per country rule and only with a splat-fest from ALL the top Eastern Europeans at the time. After her laughable compulsories I would have had her in the 20's - tops.
please go see my new upload! i uploaded mostie's AG floor routine with sound!

Retton would have/should have won vault. The rest belonged to the SOviets with a sprinkling of Romanians, Chinese and Hana Ricna.

Won? East Bloc sweep of team, AA, every event. Mary Who RETCHID tenth (best case scenario) AA.
What a joke the LA 'Olympics' were.

I think she would have won and the Soviets with the Romanians and GDR would have kept the U.S. off the podium in Team and AA imo.

@audie83 No way, USA would have beaten EGR easily. Their team was quite weak in 1983.

No indeed you're not. I've no doubt she would have.
