Hi Martin! greetings from portugal :o) first thank you for the all work you do and share. i always end up really in a good mood after watching your videos! Just one question, is the linseed oil good for food and safe? i ask this because i use a lot of lin seeds in food. Thanks again and keep up :o)
@atomsizeelephant I'm pretty sure linseed oil is safe on wood. I would check the label first and see what it says. I'm not sure if I would use it though, just to be certain.
@stevinmarin Well Steve... the label says it contains no dangerous proprieties as far as EEC laws aplly. The thing is that we cant find here in portugal any commercial product that says FOOD SAFE :D. Thanks for your reply ;o)
According to finishing expert Bob Flexner, you can use ANY finish on woods that will contact food....the trick is to let it cure and "gas out" COMPLETELY before you put contact food with your project
Utensils are difficult projects to justify all the work that goes into them. When you're all done they usually end up looking like something that could easily be picked up for a pittance in a dollar store! It can be a lot of fun to make them though.
@stevinmarin Maybe those who wrote it never tried it.
Over the years I made multiple cutting and serving boards which I've finished with olive oil and all are fine.Just make sure to let the oil dry several days before you store the it and clean it after each use like you'd normally do with kitchenware.
To keep the maple piece upright on the band saw you might first stick a properly square block to it, so that the support area on the table gets bigger and the risk of tilting is reduced. Anything will do, mdf, pine, whatever you have on hand, provided is really square. Just stick it on with double sided tape or anything that you can easily remove afterwards.
I love your videos, being a mere mortal myself :-)
did you ever think about tilting your bed and aking that first cut on an angle and avoid the thin edge on the bottom side when making that cut?? true you will have to make 2 cuts but it might be better than ruining a piece of material like your first pine one!!
@goodbar1951 YouTube is kind of weird, the way it's become. Click on the description right below the video (Right where it says "here is a pair of salad tongs..."). It will expand to show the PDF.
Good tip about the food safe finishes it never even dawned on me! Your son manage well be your younger twin brother!!
Those are pretty big tongs, they could double as a handy dandy tool to help with a hard birthing process. Doctor: "Stevin's tongs." Nurse: "Yes Doctor"... thwap! That mineral oil would make it safe for mother and child alike. LoL... ya, ya, ya... I'm a sick puppy.
Nice project non the less, no matter how you choose to use them. LoL
The salad tongs look a little like oyster-goldfish crackers, or Nemo.

Wow, I missed this one when it came out.
I read somewhere that Most finishes are food safe provided that they have cured.

Steve, I don't see a reason why not use olive oil or any other kitchen oil.
yotamkasam1 1 year ago
@yotamkasam1 I have read that cooking oil will become rancid after a while and probably start to stink. I haven't confirmed that for myself, though.

No, it will not :) I'm using it for years, and I didn't have any problems with that. Nice video :) Best regards, Greg

@stevinmarin You are correct, Olive Oil and many other kitchen oils will go rancid.
