a similar spout tore through Woodbine Ave along Northport bay in Northport Long Island and toppled trees and damaged homes

That is always true. A waterspout is a tornado over water. It is a tornado once it comes onshore.

no that was a tornado and hit towns in ct and went into long island sound which turned into a watersprout

I heard it formed over the sound. But there were tornadoes that hit CT yesterday as well.

No. That was in Long Island yesterday afternoon. My husband and daughter were on a party fishing boat out of City Island.
