Devil May Cry was the first 3D game to have the twitch type gameplay from older 2D games like the NES Ninja Gaidens, so while one inspired the other directly on the PS2 and other systems, DMC was certainly influenced by the NES Ninja Gaidens and other similar games.

It was definitely a good thing though, as 3D action games just didn't compare before DMC arrived on the scene!
