  • Soo........was it SuperMario64 the game which first brought the 3D platform to the gaming world?

  • Thank you for making this. I'll be sure to use this for artistic inspiration.

  • 7:05 He has never played Rayman 2, it's more epic at the end than any Final Fantasy game.

  • RAAAAAAAYMAAAAAAAN TWOOOOOOO~~~ My favorite game of ALLTIME.

  • technically the very first platformer ever did not have a jumping machanic. and then the next one donkey kong did have jumping.

  • game at 2:42?

  • @xFIRERUSHx Vexx

  • Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Rayman, Sonic, Mario... THESE ONES are the gods of video games.

(Well, I know there is at least two of them who have fallen those recent years, but still :D )

  • mario 64 - Classic wide open world platformer

    mario galaxy - point A to B

    what a shame....

  • @BHibbard95 mario 64 - classic square box levels usually consisting of towers you climb by walking around and around and around and around till you get to the top

mario galaxy - several boxes connected by linear segments with many items to find, star bits to collect and power ups to unlock. Every Star takes you on another adventure through the same world.

  • @sonicsneakers i guess you are right there, I just preferred Mario 64 for its open free box worlds

  • it pisses me off that my friends don't know what platforming means

they ask me what video games i like, i say platformers, and they have no idea what i am talking about

  • Tak, Ty, Mario, Sly, Jak, Ratchet and Clank.

God I love these games :D

  • I like how you showed us pictures that went with what you were saying. It's kinda funny.

  • When i was littel i injoyed the rayman series until now...

  • thumbs up if u agree with the him :D

  • hey, I love Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and I played it from beginning to end

  • This is a cool idea for a series. Only thing that bothers me is how you pronounce the word "genre" and referred to floating platforms as floating platformers. Keep it up, though!

  • need more platformers!!!!!!!!!

  • what's the game at 9.49?

  • @zigibogido A downloadable game called Braid.

  • @zigibogido freeze it and read it

  • awesome video man!

  • What type of Platformer would you consider American Mcgee's Alice?

  • gexup PLZ PLZ make a top ten game franchises for any system even pc i just want that almost everyone i know wants something like that!?!?!?!?! PLZZZZZZZZZ ;)

  • This is, without a doubt, one of the best video game description series ever seen on the internet. You pretty much nailed everything perfectly about this great genre.

I think my favorite 3D platformers would have to be games in the original Spyro trilogy.

  • i love how you say gahn-ray

  • What's the name of the game at 5:34?

  • @shyguy778 shadow complex for the xbox 360

  • Rayman! 8D I'm glad he was not forgotten.

But yes, there was a problem when Rabbids appeared. The whole team that was developing the game decided to change what was suppoused to be a platformer, into a party-game. The worst was how Rayman was gradually loosing protagonism everytime a new Rabbids game was released. At least Rayman Origins promisses to bring back Rayman in the glorious 2D format. :)

  • :'D good job

  • awesome video!

  • @gexup platformers both 2D and 3D will be always be my favorite video game genre of all time !!!! :D goddam it we should have more 3D platformers this other than sonic generations, zelda skyward sword and ratchet & clank 4 for 1!!!!>:0

  • @biliah Speaking of All 4 One, I have an idea as to why platformers don't show up anymore. There used to be games like Crash Bandicoot & Spyro the Dragon. But they changed their formula and people hated them. Same with Sonic and R&C now. Thanks to all the whining on games for changing the formula to something new and refreshing, platforms have declined. Crash Bandicoot is gone, Spyro has no trace of platforming, R&c is getting bashed for the new look and co-op. Innovative games are dying out. :(

  • @gexup hey you forgot to put in legend of zelda orcina of time and majora mask as a 3D platform. :( i know the 2D zelda except zelda 2 are overhead adventure but here a fact the platforming machinces in the N64 zelda are borrow from mario 64 except that the whole gimmick in the game is not all about the new power ups but puzzle and new ewompes while it combines with 3D mario platforming olny 50%

  • What about KNiGHTS into Dreams that Game was a Flying Platformer ?

  • what game is it at 5:30? I used to play that game all the time..?

  • I went on Wikipedia, and it states that only 147 console 3D platform games were made. BLASPHEMY!

  • dat wuz AWESOME!!!!

  • hey gexup!! i love your videos!! you are one of the youtubers that has inspired me to make an account!!! i am going to either do lets play chrono trigger, or lets play jak and daxter precursor legacy!! please reply and tell me which one to do!!

  • JET SET RADIO!

  • i want a genre episode of rpgs!

  • Great video!

  • Good presentation. I was more into the 80's stuff then lost interest and missed out on 90's games. Came back recently though and starting to get caught up with some of those '3d platformers'---played through emulation--there's some good stuff out there--

  • @mariosonicfan2010 What a looser still playing that shit. No way in fucking hell is anyone gonna give you a thumb up for joining you in the closet. Go back home and keep playing your eggs.

  • good vid bro i miss the jak and dax series .......id wish they'd continue..

  • In my experience the N64/PS1 and PS2/GC/Xbox eras were better than the current generation of Consoles because I think people were more open minded to different types of Games unlike today where its about Blood, Darkness and Realism.

  • weres banjo tooie lol... 3d platformers are the shit

  • I miss platformers they were the best kind of games (especaly the 3d ones) am i the only one who wants another 90s were 3d platformers were everywere (well also some sucked) but stuff like psychonauts and limbo are hopefully saveing platformers today and reminding call of duty players that platformers arnt going anywere!

  • @PBanimation You took the words right out of my mouth. I couldn't have said it better.

  • Hey gexup, I am working on a game review, and if you don't mind, can I reference this video on the 3 kinds of 3D platformers section, I will be sure to credit you! If so, thanks :)

  • @AQreviews Help yourself, my friend. I don't own any of these names, I had to make it up because these 3D Platformer subgenres needed names. So go ahead & use these names of these subgenres.

The Video Game Genres series is here to inform people to know a specific video game genre =)

  • This video awesomely sums up the genre,. Finally a video about 3D platformers that is not fanboyish or stupid, I agree with you 100%

  • this is like... really good

  • in my opinion spyro a heros tail was the last good spyro game sierra ruined it with a new beginning but created new fans but lost lots of old fans.

  • Everyone has their own types of genres. Platformers aren't the only games that defined what it is today. MGS defined stealth games. Yes they did, don't even deny it. I've done my research. FF was the big impact for RPG games today. Even though I love FF games doesn't mean it's my only favorite RPG games. Suikoden 1&2, Breath of Fire series. Then there are horror games like RE and Silent Hill that helped define that genre more for what it is. But there are games that helped define them as well.

  • Ok. I love all types of game genres. Excluding sports games except like 1 or 2. Tony Hawk's Underground 1 was pretty good. I'm a huge MGS fan. That's my favorite video game series of all time. I have lots of favorites though. And as I said, love all types of game genres. I love the Crash and Spyro series. Mario games are always amazing. But those are just platformers. Those aren't really my favorites. But if i had to choose my favorites from what I said, it would be Crash 2 & 3 and Spyro 1. con.

  • Next stage. The 4D platformer!

  • Wow man bravo you gived me alot informations about Cinematic Platformers etc.... im still not finishing watching them all :) good job

  • Wow awesome video and i have a question: how nonlinear or linear do you think gex and mario in 3d games are?

  • why arent you a youtube partner

  • It's not like shooter are bad - they're okay.... fot the first time. I enjoyed playing Call of Duty 4 (blind & veteran) and Gears of War 1 (blind & hardcore) and I really enjoyed those games.

Of course I'm getting bored with all those shooters now but the reason why they are popular is because back then some of them were outstanding. Now it seems that they were awesome for one time.

Platformers are different - you can make them in various ways. Shooters? Not so much.

  • Platforming games, whether 2D or 3D, are definately for the real TRUE gamers.

Sure, Story and Character Development is a nice thing to have in a game. But not when you want that over the actual game.

That's one of the big reason's today's games are becoming shit: Too much focus is being put into the Story and Character design and graphics. And not the gameplay.

All the levels and collecting bring out the real gamers.

If your looking for a fantastic story with great characters, go watch a movie!

  • @AngelOfAnEnd Even most of movies suck nowadays and even there cool effects and action sequences are more important than actual story.

And, sure, I agree that gameplay is the most important thing but it's not bad to have grat story and graphical effects. My favouite game of this year must be Alan Wake - it have great plot and characters and gameplay is quite simple. The thing is that you're using this fight mechanic in various ways and story helps create this variety.

  • Awesome video!

My favourite are rayman 3(2 and 1 are great too,but for some weird reason I like the least liked game) and mario 64..

  • Yea, 3D platforming is what video games really are.

Not "N00B ON CALL OF DUTY DFHBVGDUIBVGUIDBVVGFDIBGFUGB" stuff.

I usually feel embarrassed to talk about mario games at school because everyone gives a rats-ass about shooters instead of anything else.

    LONG LIVE THE VIDEO GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Have you ever played Glover for N64? Its an awesome 3D plaforming game!

  • every word in this video is 100% true

  • i love how it sounds like jonray

  • Comment removed

  • how does crash lose his touch being a platformer??? radical entertainment turned the game into a beat 'em up platformer, so i don't see how does it lose it's of being a platformer

  • @MRcomics09 Becuase its shit, that's why. Too much combat and the graphics are awful.

  • @BludRedDragon why do you care about graphics??? yes, "titans" focused too much on combat but "mind over mutant" focuses less

  • like it :)

  • I LOVE 2D and 3D platformers( why choose?), so seeing your videos giving tribute to this wonderful genre of games was a real treat for me. I also greatly enjoyed a couple of your reviews. I just wish I had the proper equipment to do my own reviews. I definitely have my own two cents to give on some classics. Anyway, keep up the awesome videos, and help make sure everyone knows about this brilliant genre!! =D

  • Toy Story 2 and Scooby Doo Night of 100 Frights were great.. bad examples.

  • @YearOfTheBandicoot I don't know about N.O.100.F, but I also thought Toy Story 2 was a fun game.

  • Honestly, I thought i was the only person who enjoys platform games more than other genres. I love how platform games are not necessarily "realistic" and can play around with art style, physics and animations. I really like how it's like playing a really good cartoon. Platform games, either 2D or 3D, is my favourite genre of games!

  • @StuffJunkers Amen to that man!!! XD

  • I wish they could make 3D platformers, with survivor horror game.

    is my dream game! :D

  • @bigfoxxiii With creative options of Minecraft and immense action of Serious Sam series combined into a platformer, that would be THE game.

  • 3 people shot this video with a sniper rifle

  • platformers are my favourite genres aswell but first person shooters are still fun but platformers win hands down Platformer>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>First person shooter

  • i wish platformers were more popular than they are now and by the way i got jak 1,2 and 3 for a combined cost of only $31 and ratchet and clank 1,2,3 for a combined cost of only $45

  • Fantastic video! You obviously feel passionately about this genre. This video reminded my of my childhood spending hours on the original Spyro series. I would rather play Spyro than COD or Halo right now.

  • I started discovering more 3D platformers when I finally got my PS2 back in 2008, I was really supprised at how much platforming I missed out on last generation because I ended up getting a *shrugs* gamecube which only had mario. I am more then glad im a 3D platformer fan instead of a FPS fan or one of these so called more realistic game fans. 3D platformers FTW!!!!!!!!!

  • Great video!

  • One of the most enjoyable videos on the youtube for me. It's so hard to find video-game related videos, where people actually put their mind into it. When I watched the video, I definitely felt the genuine passion that you have for the entire genre, thumbs up, sub and everything man. awesome, now I'll go and check more of your vids. Thanks for such an amazing video man.

  • Platformers are my favorite genre (Both 2D and 3D)! Mario, Sonic and Crash were like gods to me back in the late 90's! Its so sad to see so many great platforming series dying off over time since the 90's. The only series that has really surivied are Mario, Ratchet and Clank, with Sonic hanging by a thread. Hope Sonic can redeem himself with Colors. Glad to see DK back and hoping Epic Mickey does well. Mario Galaxy is the best game this generation! Fuck these Shooters!

  • Super Mario 64 was the first video game i ever played

  • Wouldn't Sonic adventure 2 be a Mission and Collect 3D platform?

  • >Final Fantasy

    >literature

That was a good one, whoever said that.

You seem to know a lot about the genre, this video makes me want to play Donkey Kong 64 again.

  • i think task and exploration 3d platformers are the best

  • Very informative and 3D platformers are my favorite genre as well! Rocket: Robot On Wheels is a nice underrated classic with brilliant level design and cool physics. I loved Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts but I still want a true Banjo-Threeie. We get a true Donkey Kong Country after all these years, so I can still have dreams about Banjo-Threeie. Sonic Colors looks to be very good. Oh, and my prediction is that LittleBigPlanet 3 will be 3D platformer.

  • mission and collect is my favourite type of platform. what is yours favourite?

  • i do remember the good old games, i think that some of the classics like mario 64 and final fantasy are in most cases better that kingdom hearts and uncharted

  • amazing work, i really like how you categorize the deferent tipes of plataformers

keep up the awesome work, i really hope this series of cg genres reviews gets well know

  • Wario Land Shake it! and Mushroomen: The spore Wars are both my favorite Wii Games

  • @twistedxgameplay yeah but wario land is a 2d platformer

  • were did u get the gex anime channel song i love it lol

  • OK i like to know which three poeple didn't like this video.

  • Well said mate, I'm really hoping for the nu-generation platformers to come soon!

  • awesome video dude so happy u put vexx in your vid thats one of my fav platformers u earned yourself a sub

  • Love the new series! Growing up in the Eighties and early Nineties, I was exposed to a lot of great 2D platformers, however it wasn't until recently that I started playing 3D platformers. The beauty of the genre is the deceptively simple mechanic of jumping from one place to another. All the other added powers/skills enhance the experience.

    Keep on keeping on.

  • i used to have super mario 64 and rayman the great escape. i miss them

nut i do have up your arsenal and sonic dx

(all of wich were in this video)

  • What's your next genre episode.......Racing?

  • Almost perfect!

    Mor rayman!

  • Really nice video! BTW Another 3D platformer that was mixed with another genre is Conker's Bad Fur Day and its xbox remake Conker live and Reloaded, Its like a shooter-based platformer since you use guns and other weapons in that game and it controls really nicely somewhat like an FPS/3rd person shooter.

  • YAY! 2,760 views!!!!!!

  • this is my favorite genre

  • 3D Platformers are also my favourite. I played many 3D platformers from the PS1 - Gamecube but not enough since I was born in 1997.

  • yeah man do a top 20 3d platformers

  • Awesome video :) I agree with everything you said :) I have always loved 3d plat formers :d :D :) Favourite Genre

  • I got to agree, now-a-days most games are FPS's or racing games. I would love to see some new 3D plat formers/puzzles. Speaking of puzzles, there aren’t really any newer puzzle games that hit big-time. Puzzle games have integrated into other games as mini-games or small parts such as in Uncharted 2.

  • Who the hell says that platformers can't be dark and brutal.

There are games like limbo on Xbox live arcade that show that horror doesn't need to be heard to be creepy as hell. I have a huge reqest for you. After this series is over could you make a series where you compare and contrast game genres. the reson I can't do it is because

#1: I can't find a proper mic, #2: I can't hook up a easycap with my tv (only 1 AV plug that has no vacancy)

    #3: I hate my voice.

    remember I'm not forcing you

  • I hope more 3D platformers will be released.

  • WOW. Great job :)

I see you work hard on these, and I'm sure it's worth it. Seriously, you do great with explenation and opinion. This is going on my favoirtes list :)

  • how about making a video about The GTA series VS the Saints Row series! Now that I think most people would want to see!

  • Great music in this vid! Anime Channel, Spyro Opening Theme etc. This was a great Genre review. Unfortunately, without being to cynical, I just see generic FPS games taking over the gamers market. *sigh*. By the way, Toy Story 2 PS1 and Bugs Bunny were fair decent, even if they were generic. And nice job nodding to your Spyro, Gex, Crash, Rayman, Ratchet, Jak, Clank and Daxter fans!

Keep up the good work, this deserves "1,567" views!

  • BTW, you 4got Tomb Raider...

  • Awesome video, man! You clearly know an awful lot about the genre, it really sucks we don't get enough of them now.

    Keep up the good work!

  • @ScottishDuck17 Hey, ScottishDuck17, I'm glad that you watched this video. I'm a huge fan of your Let's Plays and Top 10's and I like to say watching your videos inspired me to make all of these videos. =)

  • @gexup Halo probably installed the first person shooter curse in the video game industry when it was released like when Mario 64 installed the 3D platforming addiction (a good addiction) 14 years ago. Once Halo was released, more companies tried to be like them. Metroid Prime, Half-Life, Portal, Doom 3, and all the recent games like Call of Duty. Except now and in an ironic way, Halo has been overshadowed by Call of Duty.

  • @ScottishDuck17 wow didnt expect to see u

  • @gexup Sheesh.... it's so confusing. I think Darksiders have some kind of platforms here and there. Yes - there is some straight corridors but have ropes, ledges, glide extenders.... So I have an idea - it's half-platformer (with jumping etc.) and half-straight-slasher with areas to fight without a lot of platforming. And puzzles.

  • @gexup Nice! Bring it!

  • PS1 have one of the best licensed platformers ever - Bugs Bunny: Lost in time, Sheep, dog 'n wolf and Spider-man (that's a platformer, right?).

  • @gexup What about Darksiders? It's kind of game about getting from point A to B but more like Zelda with some collecting, puzzle solving and fightning system a'la slasher. There is a lot of platform gameplay too. Can this be called a platformer. I enjoyed this game because it reminded me Jak & Daxter a little. With comic blood.

  • best genre ever!!!

  • that song at 8:43 is from sonic dx, right?

  • toy story 2 is probobly one of the only Superb Movie based mario 64 clones

  • Great job

  • I'm 20 and am playing Spyro 1 for the first time in my life. LØL

  • *nods* Great video. 3D platformers are my favourite genre too. I only have maybe 20 or so games, but most of them are in that genre or have some platforming elements (such as Okami), and I STILL have more to pick up (like Klonoa and Psychonauts). There seems to be a lot more variety in them too in both format and feel when they're at their finest. It's kinda weird, since I played FPSs when I was a kid, and I'm playing platformers in my 20s. Hmm...

And I too won't be opposed to a top [#] video.

  • I have to admit that I haven't played many 3D platformers in recent years, especially not since the N64 days. Mario is pretty much the only game franchise that I turn to anymore for platforming fun though I recently also played Lego Indiana Jones, Nights - Journey of Dreams and Mirror's Edge (though I would not perhaps classify it as a platformer per se). Also Banjo-Kazooie 3 is still waiting for me to give it a proper try.

  • Killzone 3 is the most dark fps ive every seen and ppl fancy fps's to much. LIke dont you get bored owning ppl online in MW2..when in rachet and clank i can try to get all the gold bolts gold weapon, secret cutscenes soooo much more especially in jak 3.

  • we need more platformers

  • all right last question. banjo kazooie or banjo tooie?

  • A top 20 3D platformers list would rock our socks off gexup, go for it!!

  • I love them so much because I'm not exactly a die hard gamer, and I believe that a purpose of a video game is to take you two different worlds and to do things you can to in real life. It's kinda like a cartoon, except platformers make you PLAY the cartoon. One thing I love is a sense of adventure, and games like "Banjo-Kazooie" and the Mario games have always delivered for me.

  • Platformers are my favorite type of games.

  • Great review! :D I really can't stand ff fans (just the crazy ones) that think those games are much better than everything else. Yea thats their opinion, but I don't think they played anything else. I feel that way with people who just plays shooter games (like i said, fanboys pretty much). I bet your excited about Donkey Kong Country returns ^^ i know I am

    Mario Galaxy Forever<3

10 thumbs up or more for your review!

  • Nicely done Gexup!! I like the new series as well as your breakdown of the 3D Platformer genre! Two thumbs up!!

    ~DB

  • @GoochandTheDooshebag Thanks a ton, DB. I always wanted to express my passion for this genre and finally got the chance. Glad you enjoyed it XD

  • You actually think TY the tasmanian tiger is bad? I personally think it is a good game. One of my favorites to be honest. Lol, have you played that game? It is just as good as Spyro, might not have the awesome swimming mechanics but it is a good subsitute for all the horrible spyro stuff now. Don't mean to jump on you or anything, but it is a good game. I respect your opinion(might not understand it), but you have proved yourself to have good taste many times before. Nice video like always ;)

  • My favorite genre is platformers! Collect-A-Thon, Classic (A to B) whatever, they're my favorite. Mario, Spyro, Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, Donkey Kong, Banjo-Kazooie all rock!

  • holy shit, this is the reason why i subscribed

  • Comment removed

  • awsome!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree for 101% (sorry I'm bad at math)

  • Hellyeah man! This vid is awesome, I love platformers and this video reminded me why! Thanks for the video. Also yes do a top 20 platformers!

  • This video is amazing. I really liked it. Keep it up!

  • I love Platformers and RPGs

  • they need more games like assassin's creed... btw i was wondering how i could be a guest star on your podcast

  • Wich (did I spell that right?) one do you like better? Banjo Kazooie or dk64.

Mine is b and k. but that's because it was my first video game. if you say dk64, trust me, i'll understand.

  • great video, i really miss platformers, i grew up with mario 64, banjo, dk, and many more!

i feel that platformers require alot of skill, and wish people would get over shooters and return to platformers!

check out sesslers soapbox on platformers if you don't agree!

  • 3D platformers is my favourite game genre of all time!

  • Great video Gexup! 3D platformers were the for genre of video games i was introduced to. Many of them like spyro and crash represent my childhood in gaming. When looking at gaming as a hole 3D platformers do come out as one of the most modern genre so I dont see why they hav died out so quickly. Anyway hope you can do a episode on RPGs a genre i hav become a large fan of when platformers declined. P.S what is the game your showing at 3:59 to 4:07 Ive never played it is it any gd?

  • I hope that Final Fantasy Fanboy won't bother you again

  • I think uncharted is more of a cinematic platformer (a sub genre in 2-D platformers)

    Done in 3-D.

  • do you know a game called Legend Of Kay ?

  • @333alegreto333 Just wondering is that the game were you play as a cat who has his hameland invaded by rats and gorillas?

  • yes that is it !

  • @333alegreto333 Man, I love Legend of Kay.

  • i miss platformers when i was a kid its all i would play but now i dont have any platformers well i have one but it sucks and i dont have the console to play it i need to find a good platformer on the xbox 360 since my ps3 was stolen
