well, try to look it like this: ubuntu is the easiest distro of them all (which of course is good because everything works right out of the box!) and isnt the "easy way" always the most boring way? try slackware linux or gentoo, hell of a impossible to set up.. i couldnt :D ok, kidding, i wouldnt reccomend them, but you should give fedora another shot, or try opensuse, as good as ubuntu. :)
you sir have a great taste in operating systems :P

I did try OpenSuse- just didn't work for me.
Fedora is fine, just not for me.
Ubuntu may be easy, boring to set up, but that works for me.
My O/S has to be fun to use, and easy for me to work with in the case of a problem.
Ubuntu family of distros just works me.

I did try Fedora, right after Ubuntu. I couldn't get into the whole yum installer.
I prefer the Ubuntu series, it works for me.
As for safer, I set my package manager to download security updates without my permission.
Also I have App Armour on this machine, so it is safe.
As for pretty- I can download screensavers and backgrounds to suit my tastes :)
I tried Berry Linux, Fedora, 64 Studio, Sabayon, WarLinux, Kubuntu, Xubuntu, Mythbuntu, and others. :)
I did try a few before settling.
