This must be the same performance as the recent recording on the CD "Live at The Met". That Anna is fantastic is beyond discussion, but her performance in this aria is simply outstanding. I have never heard anything that comes close to this in perfection. Brava! Anna.

I was in the audience for this and screamed my face off after she sang this aria. I wanted to run up to the stage and give her a scary fanatic fan hug. Her voice was so great in this role. Then I went to see her Lucia and it was one third of this voice. Totally weird. I totally love her though

I know that no one is more divisive a subject than La Netrebko, but frankly, she kicks in here. When I first saw it on MetPlayer, her "Amour, ranime mon courage" made me want to leap out of my seat with excitement. I don't know if she's the best, but she is one exciting singer and that is what opera needs in today's day and age. Brava indeed!
For all self appointed critics here is what real critics have to say: singing as sweetly as a bell struck with a surprising outburst of coloratura, Anna is at the tipping point of serious diva fame ..She has that bel canto gift of singing like a windswept lark on a bright day, and an acting style combining the natural with the daring. Anna has been hailed as the centurys most spectacular voice with extraordinary beauty to match. NY Post Clive Garnes
Aetion, you are seeing her (I believe) pregnant here.....perhaps in the early months of it.....but notice even in her met Lucia she had lost the baby weight....goes to show that even stars have a hard time losing that weight! Also, I believe she was pregnant when she filmed Boheme....her face looks fuller and the costumes a little more generous than normal for her. How interesting that so many high profile things were filmed while pregnant!
I admit that her version of "Je veut vivre" is laboered, but Netrebko's performance of this aria is stunning. I love darkness, the slavic richness of her voice.
For me this is one of her best performances ever!!! This aria suits her voice, her way of singing and interpretation: I think, like they sometimes skip this aria if they have a lighter Juliette, in her case they should skip "Je veux vivre"...
This was my first opera ever- since that every performance, I've become an opera addict.
I WISH that her I Capuletti with Elina Garanca at the ROH was broadcast this year. Bellini's take on the story would certainly have better vocal music - but Gounod's has more passion.
I saw this at the Met and it was one of the most beautiful performances I've ever seen. She was so spectacular I couldn't stop cheering and applauding.

well if this were true there would be no need for critics. and whether or not you share the same opinion is irrelevant. its what makes art so special, everyone feels it his own way. She sings out of tune and not very classy phrasing. Not clean and not true to the style. I appreciate her attempt at the emotion, but i dont find it sincere. I see antics and tricks. also not a fan of this production. Some people would scream bravo if she sang it from some other orifice and they are entitled.
so the trills aren't there who cares. The pain is and the charater of juliet is. You are looking at the superficiality of music. Look at expression and how she portrays the character. Its marvelous
I was lucky enough to see this live and she sounds even better live than she does here. There is no amplification at the Met. It's all Anna and all wonderful!
you guys really have nothing else to complain about.
"oh there are no trills", for christ's sake! Why no one ever complains about Callas' lack of real trills? Hers weren't any better than Netrebko's. Just because she doesn't sound like a Star Trek phaser weapon you talk about it as if she was absolutely talentless, as if someone's talent could be measured to the virtuosity of one's trills.
really! it's getting ridiculuosly pointless, this criticism
I got interested in opera as a result of my interest in high quality audio equipment. This year I took a subscription. I've not seen or heard any evidence of sound enhancement. The sound of the singers and the orchestra is extremely focused and easy to pinpoint. Also, the hall is very warm and alive, reducing the need to reinforce sound.
They have enormous recording resources, though. For example, you can see robotic cameras moving along the wings during taping.
Sometimes it's better to use headphones if the video's sound is not good/soft. I know it's not good for the ears if headphones are used for a long time.
my french isn't very good, but I do believe Petitspirouet had no problem with Anna's pronunciation, and I'd bet a bunch Petitspirouet knows a whole lotta upper class French.
osvaldito55 alleges she lacks affect, a psychoanalytic term. I agree. Anna played Juliet very mechanically, and yet, I put it to the critics to find fault with her singing.
I said her affect was odd, not lacking. Perhaps she's trying to portray the emotional ups and downs of Juliet (who was not quite fourteen). This is a very difficult scene.
I didn't find her mechanical. You'd find more "mechanical" performance coming from some of the greats of the business such as Sutherland & Pavarotti(not htis work of course), but they're still wonderful!!! I agree, I think she's going for the "mad scene" approach. Personally, i think this is one of her better roles. It's far more suited to her lyric voice than Elvira or Lucia or even Violetta. I hope they release a live recording of her and Rolando singing - I don't like prima donna Alagna :)
I don't much care for this opera, so I start out with a prejudice. I saw the fabulous Anna do Juliet twice at the Met this year and I listened and watched another half dozen times, including twice this week on PBS.
A lot of the problem IMHO, is this is just not a great opera, so it falls to the performer to win or lose the day. If Anna has one notable fault it's that she's technically so good she invites scrutiny and random disdain. "How can someone so purdy be any good"? (more)
First of all, where are the trills??? What's up with that??? I can't agree more with the acting: absolutely exaggerated. Her voice does sound fresh as someone else mentioned. It was only an "ok" performance in my humble opinion.
The singing is quite OK, apart from some insecure high notes. But the acting is absolutely exaggerated and not convincing at all. Her voice sounds surprisingly fresh here - in general.
I'm at a loss here... There are nice moments, vocally and dramatically. Still, there's something not quite right, but I can't put my finger on it. Her affect, at times, is a bit odd. Other operatic deaths come to mind (Butterfly, Tosca, Gioconda, the Trovatore Leonora, even Isolde). It seems Juliette got lost somewhere.

Where the hell are the trills?

my french isn't very good, but I do believe Petitspirouet had no problem with Anna's pronunciation, and I'd bet a bunch Petitspirouet knows a whole lotta upper class French.

osvaldito55 alleges she lacks affect, a psychoanalytic term. I agree. Anna played Juliet very mechanically, and yet, I put it to the critics to find fault with her singing.
lusciousbobby 3 years ago

TheAleph74 3 years ago
The singing is quite OK, apart from some insecure high notes. But the acting is absolutely exaggerated and not convincing at all. Her voice sounds surprisingly fresh here - in general.

Brilliant, ok-ok singing. the lack of trills and the bad diction detracts from the acting though.
