Look at 2:01 and 2:38. He looked at someone (both times same direction) and shook his head like he wanted to say 'No, I don't want that' or 'Don't do it'. Can somebody explain that?
I just noticed that after they grab the mad fan and Paul pulls away he hits an open A on his guitar and it feeds back exactly like the start of "I Feel Fine"....same note on Lennon's acoustic and same feedback....very eerie
@Lineberrys That's a great observation,I wouldn't have thought of that.It is indeed the same note(concert A)for both songs but in this case not the "open" A string since Paul's guitar is tuned down a step here, you can clearly see that he's fretting a B7
chord with his finger on the 2nd fret of the A string as it's feeding back.
Anyone who has ever been on stage can tell you that- because of where the lights point- you're unable to see anyone in front of you until they're right in front of you. That's likely why he was so startled! He probably didn't see the nutjob until he was right next to him and it likely scared the bejesus out of his wig-wearing ass!
he also played this on letterman years later and broke a string at the exact second of the song this guy rushed the stage he was freaked and said he wont ever play it again the ghost of johnny ace is alive lol
@DavelovesRealMusic I saw that too,it was even more odd.He didn't actually break the string,in the middle of the tune the high E accidentally popped out of it's groove at the nut so it was still in tact but it went about a whole tone sharp!I'd never seen that happen on live tv before or since.Paul stopped playing the song, looked down at his guitar and said to himself "What happened here?!"The audience thought the song was finished so they slowly started to applaud and Dave went to a commercial.
@marjokin This is about three episodes in his life: 1956 when Johnny Ace died, 1964 when he was living in London, and 1980 when John Lennon died. When he heard that John Lennon died, it made him realize that much of his life had passed, which is why he thought back to Johnny Ace.
I wasn't there (central park) but it was televised and I saw it as it happened. I saw where this song was going and was already pretty emotional by the time he got to the Lennon part. At the height of emotion this guy charges the stage. I cannot articulate the feeling I had. My blood ran cold. Fortunately Simon kept his head together and that helped me to start breathing again. For a brief moment it seemed as if evil just seemed to have taken residence around the Dakota and Central Park.
My dad is actually rob mounsey, the guy who played the synthesizers on this concert.
He told me that a while after the concert Paul Simon told him that whenever he gets to that part of the song when he's playing, he sees that guy running at him.
The lyric isn't "...girl from the song before". You're right saying that it is Kathy, his girlfriend at the time and subject of "Kathy's Song". However, the lyric is "I was living in London with the girl from the summer before".
Paul is such a great musician and a clever guitarist. Not to mention a great singer and a poet. I remember watching this concert for the first time and I could not understand how Paul could remain so calm after that guy tried to attack him.
everybody sais this is a great tribute to lennon. does he mean lennon when he sais johnny ace? or is that only because JLs death is mentioned and was recent that time?? i´m sorry i don´t know that. enlighten me?
ps: this song is amazing. i just got the dvd for christmas and it is the first time i heared the song. somehow it is not on the cd..
The "girl from the song before" is Kathy, as in Kathy's Song. Johnny Ace died on Christmas Day, 1954, not 1956, like Paul says, but that's poetic license. The attacker said, I got to talk to Paul, and the bouncer says, "He can't talk to you." Amazing job byt the security man, we could not stand to lose Paul, too.

I will be spending today thinking about John Lennon and wondering what the world and our music would be like if he was still here.

Take into consideration that the SAME man was seen in a later song (I think the second to last song in the concert) in the backstage all happy and moving to the music as if nothing happened.
wow. I just heard this song today for the first time. I am a big beatles fan and I thought that maybe listenting to Paul Simon will make me forget about them for some time, i was so happy when he mentioned The beatles and John Lennon.
One of the hardest songs to sing acapello as the melody is totally eclectic. Difficult to master on acoustic as well. How did melodies like this play in his head? Has to be a precious gift from God.
When you really listen and watch him you realize how truly great his guitar playing is here. And, then he sings the lead vocal in time with a full band! Some singer on American Idol could not even approach this level of talent. At least I haven't heard/seen of one yet.
I love this song. So much emotion is poured into it. Though he might lose pitch a bit, I don't mind. It actually adds as an effect to the whole song giving it a certain vibe. I have never heard of this song, now I understand why he doesn't play it much.
It's good to hear from great artists like this, not like the music today. We need to bring in songs from those eras. In my opinion, music has died, and this song says it in a way.
This was definitely not staged. It's downright silly to think this would be a part of the show.
The mention of Lennon in the song, combined with Lennon's recent murder and the Dakota building nearby...it's a bit eerie. Life is stranger than fiction.
Watch Paul from 3:45 to 3:55. He was clearly distubred by this incident. He chokes up for a few seconds. But kudos to Paul for keeping it together.
@mikeypoo76 It really was on stage. I remember it. Paul said later in an interview that he didn't realised what happened and had later on no memories and sang on but we all where really shocked. It is clear to see that he was really disturbed, you are right.
Creepy and weird but certainly not staged. I heard Simon discussed this incident when he appeared on Letterman's then new show shortly after, but I can't find a clip of it anywhere. Does anyone know what happened with this nutjob? It sounds like he's saying "Paul I've gotta talk to you".
I remember this performance. It was almost a year after Lennon had been murdered. So when that idiot rushed up to the stage, I really thought Simon was going to get it, too. Fortunately, that didn't happen and "The Late Great Johnny Ace" became one of Simon's best songs.
By the way, Johnny Ace was a very good singer, too.
I hadn't heard of Johnny Ace until Paul Simons song, I watched DVD Concert ''You're The One'' and Paul sings ''Pledging my Love''which was a recording by Johnny Ace, beautiful
It Was Not Staged! The time was wrong. the wound was still open when Simon played a NY audience this song. You might not have been alive or remember what an impact the murder of Lennon had on the world in general and in partictular, this country of the United States. People still haven't truly gotten over it.
sorry to sound so cynical but that guy running up to him had to be staged!! its too much of a coincidence the song being about John Lennon and all, plus he doesn't look at all shaken by it and just carries on!!
Well, it's hard to say. It's not unlikely that someone from such a crowd could get up on stage like that. And being a pro old-timer Paul probably would not have reacted much diffrently anyway. But I agree about the coincidence - it sure gave me the creeps, staged or not...
What a completely bizarre moment. You can tell Paul Simon becomes scared for his safety, right in the middle of a song that expresses his angst about the lack of community in his hometown of New York.
The fuck., man? Why do you have to turn this into politics, much less the bullshit post you wrote? Why do people have to involve Obama in everything? tl;dr: shut the fuck up.
One of my all-time faves by Paul. I was there, & all of 17, at this show. We'd come 8 hours, & all had gone to the Dakota. Lennon had been gone less than a year, & that moment when the guy rushed the stage after that line in the song was absolutely indescribably chilling.
You could hear ever word very clearly, & it looked & felt like this guy was going to attack, or kill Paul Simon right after he had sang about John's death. Great song, strange moment. Blessings!!

Simon means Johnny Ace in the beginning. But he also says "I really wasn't such
a Johnny Ace fan..." It's a comparative study in his reaction to the deaths of each
Johnny. With the real Johnny Ace, he simply "felt bad", and sent away for his picture.
But with Lennon, one of his peers, he goes on a bender with a total stranger!!

That was scary. The guy who came on stage, felt that it was too soon for "That" reference.

This song is poingant and although his voice rambles a bit, it is appropriate for the song. This isn't one you belt out.

Blessings!!
