  • " Hugh fan of Mr Paul Simon, great song too " ~ 'Neville'

  • Great tribute to Johnny Ace! He's the best Executive Vice President Of Talent Relations and Interim General Manager Of RAW of all times!!!

  • Look at 2:01 and 2:38. He looked at someone (both times same direction) and shook his head like he wanted to say 'No, I don't want that' or 'Don't do it'. Can somebody explain that?

  • Thank god for security. What a scary moment.

  • @plectrum34...Yeah your right , not the open A!

  • I just noticed that after they grab the mad fan and Paul pulls away he hits an open A on his guitar and it feeds back exactly like the start of "I Feel Fine"....same note on Lennon's acoustic and same feedback....very eerie

  • @Lineberrys That's a great observation,I wouldn't have thought of that.It is indeed the same note(concert A)for both songs but in this case not the "open" A string since Paul's guitar is tuned down a step here, you can clearly see that he's fretting a B7

chord with his finger on the 2nd fret of the A string as it's feeding back.

  • Crazy Dude:"get your hands off me!"

Paul:"and every song we played was for the late great Johny Ace,yea yea"

  • Does any one else hear the guy say, "I gotta talk to you"? to Paul

  • @valor423 Yes. He clearly says it.

  • Anyone who has ever been on stage can tell you that- because of where the lights point- you're unable to see anyone in front of you until they're right in front of you. That's likely why he was so startled! He probably didn't see the nutjob until he was right next to him and it likely scared the bejesus out of his wig-wearing ass!

  • he also played this on letterman years later and broke a string at the exact second of the song this guy rushed the stage he was freaked and said he wont ever play it again the ghost of johnny ace is alive lol

  • @DavelovesRealMusic I saw that too,it was even more odd.He didn't actually break the string,in the middle of the tune the high E accidentally popped out of it's groove at the nut so it was still in tact but it went about a whole tone sharp!I'd never seen that happen on live tv before or since.Paul stopped playing the song, looked down at his guitar and said to himself "What happened here?!"The audience thought the song was finished so they slowly started to applaud and Dave went to a commercial.

  • this is missing from the dvd release

  • Yes, but John Lennon died Dec 8, 1980, over 16 years later. So why does he say 1964? Thanks.

  • @marjokin he said it was the year of the beatles =1964

  • @marjokin This is about three episodes in his life: 1956 when Johnny Ace died, 1964 when he was living in London, and 1980 when John Lennon died. When he heard that John Lennon died, it made him realize that much of his life had passed, which is why he thought back to Johnny Ace.

  • What year was it? Yeah, yeah, it was the year of the Beatles and the Stones, but what date?

  • @marjokin He clearly says 1964. Says it again as the year after JFK.

  • fuckin epic!!!!!!!

  • I wasn't there (central park) but it was televised and I saw it as it happened. I saw where this song was going and was already pretty emotional by the time he got to the Lennon part. At the height of emotion this guy charges the stage. I cannot articulate the feeling I had. My blood ran cold. Fortunately Simon kept his head together and that helped me to start breathing again. For a brief moment it seemed as if evil just seemed to have taken residence around the Dakota and Central Park.

  • So did we ever find out why that guy charged the stage? Who was he? Was he drunk or crazy? Was he arrested?

  • i love these chords. so crazy

  • My dad is actually rob mounsey, the guy who played the synthesizers on this concert.

He told me that a while after the concert Paul Simon told him that whenever he gets to that part of the song when he's playing, he sees that guy running at him.

    freaky shit.

  • The lyric isn't "...girl from the song before". You're right saying that it is Kathy, his girlfriend at the time and subject of "Kathy's Song". However, the lyric is "I was living in London with the girl from the summer before".

  • sometimes i just feel like giving paul simon a hug lmao

  • Paul is such a great musician and a clever guitarist. Not to mention a great singer and a poet. I remember watching this concert for the first time and I could not understand how Paul could remain so calm after that guy tried to attack him.

  • Simon means Johnny Ace in the beginning. But he also says "I really wasn't such

a Johnny Ace fan..." It's a comparative study in his reaction to the deaths of each

Johnny. With the real Johnny Ace, he simply "felt bad", and sent away for his picture.

But with Lennon, one of his peers, he goes on a bender with a total stranger!!

  • @McGurkerRULZ His voice is.. very sweet. I don't know know what you're talking about.

  • everybody sais this is a great tribute to lennon. does he mean lennon when he sais johnny ace? or is that only because JLs death is mentioned and was recent that time?? i´m sorry i don´t know that. enlighten me?

ps: this song is amazing. i just got the dvd for christmas and it is the first time i heared the song. somehow it is not on the cd..

  • The "girl from the song before" is Kathy, as in Kathy's Song. Johnny Ace died on Christmas Day, 1954, not 1956, like Paul says, but that's poetic license. The attacker said, I got to talk to Paul, and the bouncer says, "He can't talk to you." Amazing job byt the security man, we could not stand to lose Paul, too.

  • I'll never stop missing John Lennon

  • The best tribute to Lennon that I know. Paul McCartney wrote "Here Today" and Elton John wrote "Empty Garden"... also very moving and emotional tributes, but I have always liked "Johnny Ace" the best.

I will be spending today thinking about John Lennon and wondering what the world and our music would be like if he was still here.

  • @snowyowl567

Harrison's tribute captured the essence of Lennon the best IMO..."You point the way to the truth when you say 'All you need is love."

  • @snowyowl567 i feel the same way. we will never forget him.

  • An amazing performance by a man who is obviously on the edge of powerful emotions.

RIP John Lennon. Thank you, Paul, for articulating the numbness and grief we felt.

  • He sure wasn't wearing any wig. HOw crazy.

  • THAT shouldn't happen to ANYBODY... that almost made me cry (the song and the inncident put together)!

  • wtf? sum1 tried to attack paul............ and paul's so smooth about it haha. paul, john, and johnny ace are the shit!!

  • @cuff1957-Most people know Paul Simon wore a hairpiece(not a fucking wig)during this period. In hindsight it might seem obvious, but it was one of the better looking pieces I've seen. Stop mentioning it for heaven's sake. Who the Fuck comes onto the comments section of a great song by a master songwriter, just to impart such bullshit. What's that they say about small minds?

  • Uhm, guys, wasn't someone trying to attack paul?!!?

  • What year was this? {{-_-}}

  • @Suitsnappy 1981

  • this song reminds me of the end of the world, for some reason

  • Perhaps that guy who almost attacked Paul was kinda ticked on how Paul was performing so many solo songs.

  • @bobbyiscool1992 I think the mention of John lennon dying in their city so short a time before upset people, especially the unhinged.

  • Whose the dick that rushes Paul Simon, ya know he's famous and great and kind of a small guy, so we smaller guys have to watch out for these crazies.

  • such a beautiful song, such a beautiful man

(such a stupid man running on the stage)

  • I bet he thought the US gov was behind the murder of Lennon, and thats what he wanted to say.

  • the late great Pauly wig

  • I think Paul Simon is the biggest inspiration today for us wannabe writers. The Late Great Johnny Ace is an all time fav of mine.

  • Does anybody know what that guy was gonna say if he got the chance to talk to paul?

  • does Paul Simon wear a wig in that? :O

  • @nufc2k10 No.

  • @winterweib it sure looks like it

  • look at paul with the wig on

  • @cuff1957 What the heck who cares if he wares a wig, when I hear him on a cd or the radio. I couldn't give a shit about that. Dude why is there always someone that points out something so stupid so meaningless as that......how bout the song? Is it good? Does it hold any meaning for you?

  • @nat00ben06 yes it holds alot of meaning for me,he was wearing my wig.

  • @cuff1957 And still - if you have nothing better to do than come here to critique wigs, you suck, and that's sad.

  • @guitarbill71 go say that to sy sperling he is always spouting out about wigs billy bob yeeehaa, just like tim mcgraw another wig wearing idiot you never see that guy without that 10gallon hat on,thats okay bill you keep stroking your guitar like you do your little dick and we will all be happy wig wearing spotters.

  • @cuff1957 You might want to see a therapist about that wig hatred. I'm sure you'll end up with a recovered memory of the scout leader that molested you having a bad wig.

  • @guitarbill71 nope just dont like people that are phonys, dont lie to us tell us the truth if your bald fine dont throw a muskratt on your head and insult everyones intelligence.

  • Great tribute to his old friend JL

  • What a cunt (not Paul, the guy who rushed the stage).

  • Paul Simon looks like a kid, here. It was admirable how he picked it right up again, after that screwball jumped on the stage.

  • " Great great song by probably one of the best singer song writers in the business, Mr Paul Simon, why this guy could pack out NYC Central Park audience capacity at least 750,000 min, big respect for PS and his musical prowess ".

  • To the kids who never understood what happened:

Take into consideration that the SAME man was seen in a later song (I think the second to last song in the concert) in the backstage all happy and moving to the music as if nothing happened.

  • What the hell was that guy doing? I love how Paul just picks the song right back up.

  • @tramsay1027 He said: I need to talk to you. Later on he said that he was sorry for it but it was a horrible moment for everyone who saw this.

  • R.I.P John Lennon my hero forever :(

  • I wonder what went through his head at the last 30 seconds there.

  • What an ending...

  • why did that guy jump on stage like that. Its such a good song. That was just plain rude of that guy to do that to paul

  • the guy who jumped on the stage... wonder what he was yelling at simon.

  • iirc, he was saying "i gotta talk to you" presumably about one of the assassinations

  • hmm... he might have picked a better time.

  • He told him not to sing it and that he warned him not to

  • loses pitch?

Fantastic song from a fantastic album.

  • wow. I just heard this song today for the first time. I am a big beatles fan and I thought that maybe listenting to Paul Simon will make me forget about them for some time, i was so happy when he mentioned The beatles and John Lennon.

  • i gawta tawk to ya i gawta tawk to ya i gawta tawk to ya is wat duh guy said.

  • I freaking love Paul Simon.

    And this song.

    And Johnny Ace.

    :3

  • RIP John...your fans miss you every day.

  • The guy who rushed Simon should have been charged. Plainly as mad as that asshole Mark Chapman who killed Lennon.

  • One of the hardest songs to sing acapello as the melody is totally eclectic. Difficult to master on acoustic as well. How did melodies like this play in his head? Has to be a precious gift from God.

  • I was thinking the same thing myself.

When you really listen and watch him you realize how truly great his guitar playing is here. And, then he sings the lead vocal in time with a full band! Some singer on American Idol could not even approach this level of talent. At least I haven't heard/seen of one yet.

  • I love this song. So much emotion is poured into it. Though he might lose pitch a bit, I don't mind. It actually adds as an effect to the whole song giving it a certain vibe. I have never heard of this song, now I understand why he doesn't play it much.

It's good to hear from great artists like this, not like the music today. We need to bring in songs from those eras. In my opinion, music has died, and this song says it in a way.

    Long live Simon and Garfunkel!

I wonder where that man is now?

  • This was definitely not staged. It's downright silly to think this would be a part of the show.

The mention of Lennon in the song, combined with Lennon's recent murder and the Dakota building nearby...it's a bit eerie. Life is stranger than fiction.

Watch Paul from 3:45 to 3:55. He was clearly distubred by this incident. He chokes up for a few seconds. But kudos to Paul for keeping it together.

  • @mikeypoo76 It really was on stage. I remember it. Paul said later in an interview that he didn't realised what happened and had later on no memories and sang on but we all where really shocked. It is clear to see that he was really disturbed, you are right.

  • @mikeypoo76 or maybe he was slightly put off by the psycho who rushed him on stage

  • He really knows the meaning of "The Show Must Go On"

  • Absolutely not staged.

  • He didn't even miss a beat when rushed by a mad man!

  • Creepy and weird but certainly not staged. I heard Simon discussed this incident when he appeared on Letterman's then new show shortly after, but I can't find a clip of it anywhere. Does anyone know what happened with this nutjob? It sounds like he's saying "Paul I've gotta talk to you".

  • sounds to me more like: "like i told you".

  • I remember this performance. It was almost a year after Lennon had been murdered. So when that idiot rushed up to the stage, I really thought Simon was going to get it, too. Fortunately, that didn't happen and "The Late Great Johnny Ace" became one of Simon's best songs.

By the way, Johnny Ace was a very good singer, too.

  • I hadn't heard of Johnny Ace until Paul Simons song, I watched DVD Concert ''You're The One'' and Paul sings ''Pledging my Love''which was a recording by Johnny Ace, beautiful

  • anyone found a tab for this? looks like the tunings different from lookin at his fingering.

  • He's tuned his guitar down a whole tone from normal tuning and started in Bbmaj7#11

  • Paul Simon is the man! He doesn't miss hardly a beat after the bum rush. GO PS!

  • It Was Not Staged! The time was wrong. the wound was still open when Simon played a NY audience this song. You might not have been alive or remember what an impact the murder of Lennon had on the world in general and in partictular, this country of the United States. People still haven't truly gotten over it.

  • To me Paul Simon is one of the most talented singer song writers of the millenium. God bless you Paul we luv ya Neville

  • not staged. i think the bum rush is why this song is not on the cd.

  • sorry to sound so cynical but that guy running up to him had to be staged!! its too much of a coincidence the song being about John Lennon and all, plus he doesn't look at all shaken by it and just carries on!!

  • Well, it's hard to say. It's not unlikely that someone from such a crowd could get up on stage like that. And being a pro old-timer Paul probably would not have reacted much diffrently anyway. But I agree about the coincidence - it sure gave me the creeps, staged or not...

  • Epic stage rush, Simon gets accosted by a fan while singing about a guy who was killed by one.

  • Paul Simon is the greatest

  • The guy says to SImon, "I wanns talk to you, I wanna talk to you"

  • This song is big. It means something.

  • when i first seen this I THOUGHT THE SAME THING,...it means somethin BIG

  • That was scary. The guy who came on stage, felt that it was too soon for "That" reference.

  • What a completely bizarre moment. You can tell Paul Simon becomes scared for his safety, right in the middle of a song that expresses his angst about the lack of community in his hometown of New York.

  • I wonder where the crazy guy is now...

What do you think he wanted?

  • Comment removed

  • The fuck., man? Why do you have to turn this into politics, much less the bullshit post you wrote? Why do people have to involve Obama in everything? tl;dr: shut the fuck up.

  • Greatest live performance ever! Thanks for posting 2dannyc89!

Linclink: Thanks for sharing your memories. Wish I had been there!

  • This song is poingant and although his voice rambles a bit, it is appropriate for the song. This isn't one you belt out.

  • One of my all-time faves by Paul. I was there, & all of 17, at this show. We'd come 8 hours, & all had gone to the Dakota. Lennon had been gone less than a year, & that moment when the guy rushed the stage after that line in the song was absolutely indescribably chilling.

You could hear ever word very clearly, & it looked & felt like this guy was going to attack, or kill Paul Simon right after he had sang about John's death. Great song, strange moment. Blessings!!

  • nice...very nice!
