Vernons Girls' version is the Original. When it wasn't a hit in England, their manager gave it to another of his artists ( Françoise Hardy) and, as they say, the rest is history. Lead singer for Vernons Girls is Jean Owen, a Liverpool girl. Soon changed her name to Samantha Jones and had a string of great songs which, again, the Poms generally ignored. Most of Samantha's songs are now available on CD. For a brilliant example, try the wall-of-sound "I Deserve It", available on YouTube.
