  • Hello,

I have Windows XP Professional SP3 on my laptop. I am wanting to learn some basic UNIX commands and try shell scripting. Would this UBUNTU do it for me?

Also, which product in VMWARE should I be downloading and installing?

    Thank you

  • Excellent video! Very informative.

  • im running Snow Leopard in VMware :D

  • @YesMan457 congartulations!!

  • "am not going to save now....meahhh.. i'll save " =))) EPIC

  • Yo will this work in windows 7?

  • @tardis787 yea

  • @tardis787 yes

  • does anyone know what version of vmware server this is (e.g. 1 or 2)? I downloaded and installed version 2 and it doesnt seem to have a console. I googled this and other people reported version 2 not having a console.

  • where can i download the .iso files (especially ubuntu )

  • @didagoal ww.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download FROM HERE ..IT'S THE LATEST VERSION

  • awesome video man!!

  • Just a public service since I just discovered it and think it's super cool: You can install ubuntu WITHOUT partitioning your drive. If you are running WinXP/7 etc, just install the windows installer from the ubuntu install page. It will make a little image drive within your windows partition (eg 10-30gb) and let you do a native boot WITHOUT messing with your windows installation or requiring you to partition / reformat. Runs much faster than VMware.

  • @Yaten13 Thanks for the info, I'm downloading it, but the vid was posted 2.5 years ago. I think it was really useful then. See ya and thanks again!

  • check out my Linux channel people! nothing but Linux and Opensource Goodness! :)

  • Hey guys. Is there any software that runs ALREADY installed Linux (in a partition) in Windows? Like Parallels Desktop for Mac/PC.

  • where can i get VMware ?

  • @K0UK0U

I'd post a link but youtube blocks them. so try googling it. there's a free version that just requires registration and it's very easy to find

  • why would i run linux?

  • @SpiritWanderer50 Because it's better than Windows.

  • @SpiritWanderer50 1- no viruses 2-give more battery life 3- better graphic 4- very fast 5- free 6- you get updated twice a year for free 7- all softwares for free 8- you are able to use wine 9- more more....

  • wubi sux sumtimes it dnt work

  • Just install Wubi

It installs ubuntu like a program and it works just like if you installed it to a partition. If you dont like linux you can unistall it from the add/remove programs in windows

  • Can you make a Windows XP virtual machine then install Ubuntu in the XP virtual machine to make desktop effects work?

  • @Larmour

I run Windows XP, and Windows 7 inside Linux, and Linux is running as a Wubi installer... Plus I'm using VirtualBox in Linux that is free... Unlike vmware that cost money...

and you can just download Linux Mint as a Live CD if you don't want to install it. but if you have Nvidia than Mint wont work correctly with out installing and the driver... but there are linux out there with Nvidia drivers pre-installed...

  • in order to run ubuntu u have to have vmware??? or can u use virtual machine or virtual box

  • You don't have to have vmware. vmware is just a method of installing it without any affect on your machine. (Permanently installing Ubuntu).

  • can you run linux terminal with this VM thing?

  • Use Sun Virtual Box, it allows for a dynamically expanding images

  • thanks..it helps us alot....

  • do i use vmware ESXi or VMware server?

  • Good video...thanks for pointing out Virtual BIOS! I'll have to try this.

  • Awesome man... Many thanks, this was what i need.

  • thanks :)

  • help me i have xp and with vmware linux ubuntu , i want have effects in ubunt but i dont have, what is the option to on the effects, please i need help :)

  • at 4:40 he says: after clicking the window.....you must pressed Ctrl+Alt. When should i do that? and why should i do that? can someone explain cause i don't understand. thanx

  • Comment removed

  • ctrl + alt is for mouse escaping. So it is like when your cursor is inside VMWare, it is stuck inside the little window (your guess OS, like ubuntu in this example). If you want to free your cursor back to the host system (windows), you have to press ctrl+alt =)

  • i believe once you're in the virtual machine your mouse and keyboard is locked into it, and to get out, or back to windows XP, press ctrl+alt,

ithink, im new to this too, but hey, hope its understandable

  • Now, I have a question. If I got this working, could I use compiz on my Ubuntu guest? Please respond, thanks.

  • no, only if ubuntu is your real os you can

  • Does it work in vista?

  • it should as long as you have VMware i have vista and i use VMware workstation (hacked)and it worked fine

  • new version, yes.

  • good stuff!!!

one question, can u make ubuntu to full screen?

    thx

  • oh, i got it, it is under screen resolution

  • yes you can

  • can i still used this even though i already have ubuntu 8.10 installed in my pc???

  • yes u can. one advantage of VM is that, you can just delete the system if u screw up.

  • if i use vmware on window xp to install ubuntu linux..will i have the effect of ubuntu linux?

or its just a temporary linux?

  • no its full

  • The quality is crystal clear =\

  • thanks man! u rock! =P

  • this is video is extreamly useful for me

  • Excellent tutorial. Thanks.

Now just need to find one for installing Oracle 10g!

  • Very helpul video. I don't think you would try "Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007". It doesn't support Ubuntu Linux. It's very abbysmal. I hope Microsoft will fix it.:P

  • reply to kenjigraphics - I don't think Microsoft will fix it... They hate Linux, they probably made the fault deliberately.

  • You da man. This is lovely.

  • This is a bit dated, but good still. He doesn't show you all the updates that are required, or some of the other step involved. I have to say though, it wasn't bad installing on my second hard drive. I have been looking for an alternative to Win-XP for YEARS - and Umbuntu is a good place to start.

  • Hmmm... A friend that uses Fedora told me that Fedora is more for newbs, so I started using it. He told me that Ubuntu is for more experienced persons. Well it depends on person really =p

    P.S: Its Ubuntu :) you typo'ed it

  • do you gotta pay to use VMware?

  • How do pcmedianet uploaded more than 10min movie?

  • I made everything right, but ubuntu keeps freezing.. when that happens I have to close and reopen. And I dont have internet

  • You have to register with VMware to get the serial number.

This is cool, I was able to do it. The thing that sucks is that the other stuff doesn't work in it, like beryl and etc. I wanted to get a hands on experience with beryl and stuff, but it seems like I'll have to dual boot it to be able to do it....

  • can you use it in a full screen mode without the part of the software in the side?

  • Yes, VMware has the option go to full screen.
