I have Windows XP Professional SP3 on my laptop. I am wanting to learn some basic UNIX commands and try shell scripting. Would this UBUNTU do it for me?
Also, which product in VMWARE should I be downloading and installing?
does anyone know what version of vmware server this is (e.g. 1 or 2)? I downloaded and installed version 2 and it doesnt seem to have a console. I googled this and other people reported version 2 not having a console.
Just a public service since I just discovered it and think it's super cool: You can install ubuntu WITHOUT partitioning your drive. If you are running WinXP/7 etc, just install the windows installer from the ubuntu install page. It will make a little image drive within your windows partition (eg 10-30gb) and let you do a native boot WITHOUT messing with your windows installation or requiring you to partition / reformat. Runs much faster than VMware.
@SpiritWanderer50 1- no viruses 2-give more battery life 3- better graphic 4- very fast 5- free 6- you get updated twice a year for free 7- all softwares for free 8- you are able to use wine 9- more more....
It installs ubuntu like a program and it works just like if you installed it to a partition. If you dont like linux you can unistall it from the add/remove programs in windows
I run Windows XP, and Windows 7 inside Linux, and Linux is running as a Wubi installer... Plus I'm using VirtualBox in Linux that is free... Unlike vmware that cost money...
and you can just download Linux Mint as a Live CD if you don't want to install it. but if you have Nvidia than Mint wont work correctly with out installing and the driver... but there are linux out there with Nvidia drivers pre-installed...
help me i have xp and with vmware linux ubuntu , i want have effects in ubunt but i dont have, what is the option to on the effects, please i need help :)
at 4:40 he says: after clicking the window.....you must pressed Ctrl+Alt. When should i do that? and why should i do that? can someone explain cause i don't understand. thanx
When it goes into bootloader, you cant click outside of the bootlader when it first starts, for instance, if your watching this video step by step, you wont be able to click outside the bootloader to watch the video. Its only for a short time until ubuntu boots up then you can go back to watching the video, reading forums or whatever your doing. Hope this helps
ctrl + alt is for mouse escaping. So it is like when your cursor is inside VMWare, it is stuck inside the little window (your guess OS, like ubuntu in this example). If you want to free your cursor back to the host system (windows), you have to press ctrl+alt =)
well if any of u guys know how to install the flash plugin for firefox 3 beta 5 tell me also hwo do u install fire fox 3 final i cant seem to install it after i downloaded the file
Very helpul video. I don't think you would try "Microsoft's Virtual PC 2007". It doesn't support Ubuntu Linux. It's very abbysmal. I hope Microsoft will fix it.:P
This is a bit dated, but good still. He doesn't show you all the updates that are required, or some of the other step involved. I have to say though, it wasn't bad installing on my second hard drive. I have been looking for an alternative to Win-XP for YEARS - and Umbuntu is a good place to start.
Hmmm... A friend that uses Fedora told me that Fedora is more for newbs, so I started using it. He told me that Ubuntu is for more experienced persons. Well it depends on person really =p

All three of you guys are retarded. Really why the hell would you watch this video if you don't even understand linux. Liser linux isn't only to hack. You have to register with VMware to get the serial number.
This is cool, I was able to do it. The thing that sucks is that the other stuff doesn't work in it, like beryl and etc. I wanted to get a hands on experience with beryl and stuff, but it seems like I'll have to dual boot it to be able to do it....

You don't have to have vmware. vmware is just a method of installing it without any affect on your machine. (Permanently installing Ubuntu).
