How can HBC be an official sponsor of an Olympics that purposely includes four host aboriginal nations in the opening ceremonies, then produce such a culturally insensitive (I might even say ignorant) commercial!?
They extol the invasion and "conquering" of Canada while ignoring the fact that this land was NOT unoccupied when our ancestors arrived. Has HBC learned nothing of our own history, and HBC's role in the destruction of what was here?
I'm a Canadian that supports national pride. But, I do NOT support the HBC ripping off the Cowichan's traditional sweater design, then commissioning these Olympic "Canadian" sweaters to be made in China instead. Our First Nations should not be disrespected this way. Especially with an ad that implies that Canada was empty, when Aboriginal people were critical to the survival of the first settlers and the HBC itself.
...we helped colonize and exploit the land and made blankets that were later used by the British to contaminate the indigenous population with small pox. We traded with the indigenous people and helped introduce them to liquor, which, as their culture and way of life became threatened, led to the appearance of alcoholism, where previously none existed...
I think they left out the chapter involving exterminating an entire people and culture. They must have cut that scene where the "Conquering" European gives the blanket laced with smallpox to the First Nation's Chief.
I'm all for national pride, but this commercial utterly lacks historical accuracy and sympathy. The HBC dropped the ball on this one. Poor taste.
this commercial makes me want to cry...finally!!! Canada is being patriotic. Congrats HBC on the fantastic commercial. It gives me chills every time!! xoxo
would never have been formed! Without the native peoples Canada would have failed, and the HBC doesn't even have the courtesy to mention them! The Olympics are being held in a part of our country not even remotely close to the Hudson Bay... But where the vast majority of our Native populations live!
We should be celebrating the history of ALL our peoples, not hiding it!
This commercial is historically inaccurate and stupid! If it's just about the HBC, then talk about the HBC and leave out the "we were made for this" crap! If it's about Canada them get your freaking history right!!
Canada would not exist AT ALL without the help of our indigenous peoples. Without them the first exploeres would have died and never made it very long.
And without good trade relationships between them and the French, the first permanent settlement of Kebec (now Quebec)
This is hands down one of my favourite commercials of all time. The music inspiring, the message superb, and the beauty of Canada is beautifully depicted.
This is a fabulous ad! We don't see ones like this very often. And, as other have said, I'd love to have the music! If not this exact song (since it's probably exclusive to the commerical) then maybe someone knows of something similar?
For everyone wondering the song is a stock song used in various commercials. It was probably modified slightly to fit the timing of the spot but agencies rarely compose new music for commercials like this. It's a great piece of music though.
As in "everyone" I think you are meaning European settlers. This commercial is cool but it totally fails to recognize Aboriginal people. It makes it seem as if First Nations didn't even exist when the settlers first arrived, not to mention them being major contributors in keeping the settlers alive and building our nation.
What a joke... 'we arrived 340 years ago.' How did they not see the ignorance in this commercial? I love the song, it has some nationalism to it but in its essence is ignorant and demeaning. Sometimes what our forefathers did to the Natives is still a direct embarrassment.
If Canada made more commercials like this. Our National Pride would go through the roof. I love this commercial. It shows the hardships of this land how everyone adapted to this land. Good Job HBC. This is a awesome commercial.

agreed i never really had any national pride in canada but after seeing this and the cola commercial my national pride is at a definite high!!!! go canada kick some amercian ass!!!!!!!!
Have all the "Nay sayers" been doing any homework before criticizing at all? The narrator said, "340 years ago" That's when the HBC was founded. Therefore this ad is only about HBC. Had the guy say, "474 years ago" then you have an ad regarding Canada, not the HBC.
Have YOU been doing your research? The founding of the HBC was based upon the exploitation of the indigenous peoples living in Canada. HBC explorers and workers would not have been able to survive had it not been for the hospitality of native peoples, whom basically taught them everything they needed to know in order to live. So yes, this is an ad about the HBC. But understand that the HBC would never have succeeded without the exploitation of the native peoples.
This video is not about Canadians colonizing a country for god sake. It is a Hudson's Bay Company Ad. A company that used to be 100% Canadian, but no longer is. However, it is merely the Bay bragging that they have the official sweater. That is good at it's okay. It's about the Bay, they are not trying to make a political statement, nor should they be, they are advertsing a product. I love the Bay, it's Canadian historically. It's all good.
true, this commercial wasn't meant to make a social commentary. But it doesn't mean that social issues should be ignored or forgotten. If the intent is to inspire patriotism to ALL canucks and not just the white ones, then the commercial should be sensitive to minorities as well. I love Canada, but come on. HBC can do better than that, unless their intent was to exclude all non-white canadians.
this commercial wasn't meant to be a social commentary on canada's history. i don't get why people take every opportunity to discredit the olympics and anything related. sure, poverty, racism, and our troubling colonial past still exist. but can't people just celebrate a moment, when many citizens are behind one movement, and take the opportunity to do some good instead of barking about all the things that are wrong in our world?
I think the native group that is in question should actually be proud... our nation's oldest company chose their design to represent our country, our pride, and our people.
It is sad to look at it as Canada's "uniqueness". This ad fails to recognize Aboriginal People, let alone the sad and cruel history Aboriginal people have had over the past 500 years.
To me in this ad Canada is saying, colonization is okay, and that its okay to forget. Reconciliation seems like a joke, when Canada has ads like this out.
It is ridiculous how Canada makes this ad trying to show how the "Europeans" came here and "survived." It gives the impression that Canada as being an empty land(ie. no people before) and goes to show how this country can't even fully acknowledge its TRUE history. Colonization is a huge part of our history, and the survival of the "settlers" was a lot more than just 'surviving' the elements-- the elimination of many Native tribes, residential schools, the acts of assimilation etc.
but why would they put that in a commercial. They know what happened and they know its part of the history but its the dark parts and it doesnt belong in a commercial like this.
i believe that the video is more to sell their products rather than celebrate the olympics... i also think that they also need to take a native studies course... cause they're quite misinformed... LOL
i love the olympics like everyone else... but when it comes to something like this, that is inaccurate in the history of north america then im sorry, they need to make another commercial... that is more... correct.
although this commercial is supposidly rying to support the olympics, I can see the problems that will arise from watching this... some examples would be...
the europeans arriving 340 years ago... no i'm pretty sure it was longer than that..
from the sounds of it, they made it seem like that the land was empty (rock, ice, and snow)... well... they're quite mistaken. populations of over 72 million lived there before the europeans... now called first nations, metis, and inuit?
HBC needs to remember there be no such thing as them today if they dident have Mohawk people to guide them and do the canoeing for them because they were the best in the area only ones that were brave enough to go against the rapids.
HBC ENTIRE history has to do with Indigenous peoples of north america.
My sweater just arrived! thought I would come back to see the commercial again. whats with the negativity? We all need to support Canada so we can get our first gold at home. GO CANADA GO!!!!! I need to get more mittens for the fam, anybody got any ideas?
As a Canadian I found it inspiring; it's a commercial folks, not a treatise on Canadian - HBC - Native relations. It doesn't matter where the clothes are made, HBC employs thousands of Canadians and supports thousands more through its Canadian business. The point is CANADA has an affinity for the Winter Games and we can draw on our uniqueness to show the world what we are made of which I hope is not represented by the ignorance and shallowness of some of the posts below.
wow. way to rewrite indigenous people out of history. sorry HBC, this land was not "rock & ice" when you got here. it was full of people who taught HBC & other explorers how not to die so quickly. read your own explorers' accounts.
not going to support the HBC after seeing this... hopefully they will have to give compensation for stealing cowichan sweaters.
Wow...I hate the olympics lol They're ripping off the Cowichan and this add just made it look like Canada was NOTHING until the European settlers showed up.
Good morning chiefs. I am sure you have all been following the news of how the Hudson's Bay Company and the Vancouver Olympic Committee has knocked off the Cowichan sweater to produce their own version for the official uniforms for the 2010 olympics, and which are being sold at the HBC stores for $350 each. This rip-off is getting heavily criticized in the media, and Cowichan, I understand, is looking into their legal options with respect to their Trademark for Genuine Cowichan.
It tells the story of the coming of the white man to the new world, an empty place of rock and snow, which white man tamed and made into Canada. There is a half-second flash of seeing Cowichan-like sweaters hanging in some early settlement early in the ad, hinting that these came with the Europeans too. Through the ad, old Hudson's Bay Company symbols (blankets, chests, crests, etc) are flashed, as the white man expands their presence.
The history told in this ad writes-out indigenous presence on the land. It popularizes the legal fiction of Terra Nullius, the idea that North America was an 'empty land' here for the taking. It erases the whole place of indigneous people over the last 350 years, from the resistence to colonization, to the contributions made to the building of contemporary society.
I believe that the political leadership of aboriginal communities should be aware of this vulgar portrayal of history by the Hudson's Bay Company, to promote their stolen sweater. The theft and profiteering off the genuine Cowichan sweater, along with the ironically parallel promotion of a re-telling of colonial history without indigenous people on the land, needs to be seen for what it is. Please pass the information along widely to help generate what should be an anti-colonial response.
Are you with the Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group? I just read that email, it was forwarded to me. Not are these made in China, they were ripped off from the Cowichan band and they have yet to see a single yet or honorable mention from the Bay or the Olympic Committee!
I like this ad. HBC is available in most Macy's around here.
If Canada promotes these Olympic Games thoroughly, then many people will want to visit in the Summer 2010, instead of going across the pond or to Orlando, I think.
Any rockslides lately on the Sea-to-Sky Highway?
We always made a pitstop about halfway from The 'Couv at the McDonald's in Squamish!
I will go to The Bay ... I will look at the clothing but if I see it is made anywhere other than CANADA, I won't be buying it. I refuse to NOT support our Canadian workers out of work because of foreign manufacturers. I will, however, support our athletes in other ways.
As an employee at the Bay, and an Olympic Representative, I am honoured to be part of such an amazing celebration of Canadian achievements. This commercial just amplifies that no other country is made to embrace sports and multiculturalism and fuse it together to show what we are made out of. HBC has been supporting and supplying the athletes uniform in the early 30's and I couldn't think of a better company to dress the athletes. Canada, we were all made for this.
corporate sponsorship is what makes it possible for our athletes to compete on the world stage. speaking of which, I just ordered my red mittens online, 60% of proceeds goes to our athletes. GO CANADA GO.....gold @ home, proudly canadian.
I think that either you missed the point or just want to be negative, but I think the point of the commercial is to attribute the fact that throughout history the adventurous, explorers and dreamers come here to live a life where you can be anything you desire. True the natives were here before HBC, no one is disputing that; but its more ignorant to think that 1 min. can possibly contain the amount of efforts that the many cultures of the people who have immigrated here have contributed.
I can not believe the ignorance of this video that igores the fact that people lived here in what is now Canada long before the Hudson's Bay company and "pioneers". Its really an awful video and I'm embarassed as a Canadian that our First Peoples of Canada and their contribution has been completely ignored. Come on people!!! Be fair !
I hope the "native" inspired sweaters are MADE IN CANADA. 100% and helped our textile workers as you can be sure they did not have native canadian knitters make them. Go Canada! the best to all competitors non-corporate that is. LOL!
If it weren't for these investors who are loyal to heritage and belief in these companies they would die. Ask yourself if you'd rather that. I am very proud of Richard Baker and our new CEO Bonnie Brooks and Jeffery Sherman for realizing the importance of the four stripes that have lasted since May 2nd - 1670.
Hbc has an American owner, very, VERY committed to the heritage and history of this company. He's even considering putting HBC back on the TSE in the spring. We are still fully Canadian operated. It is also a proud feeling to be tied to AMERICA's oldest department store, lord and taylor.
I love how they say "We were made for this" very, very catchy. Way to go HBC. We are all proud that you are part of Canada's beautiful history. I love CANADA- the best place to live on earth.
This company never ceases to amaze me. If you worked for HBC you would understand the pride and the Canadian connection. What an amazing commercial. Kudos for all HBC has put into the 2010 Canadian Winter Olympic games.
OMG I love it.I went to the launch of the opening Olympic superstore at the bay Vancouver to-day it was awesome .the clothes are GREAT.You got to go and see this shop it is amazing.Makes me pround to be Canadian.
please be more informed, also read my comments. Try to get into the spirit of things and be less negative. The athletes need your positivity, don't be a downer.
this is about the olympics, not the hudsons bay company. what a ridiculous ad, and what disgustingly ugly uniforms. ROOTS SHOULDN'T HAVE LOST THEIR CONTRACT.

Wow...I hate the olympics lol They're ripping off the Cowichan and this add just made it look like Canada was NOTHING until the European settlers showed up.
Yah...but that's my two cents.

Are you with the Hul'qumi'num Treaty Group? I just read that email, it was forwarded to me. Not are these made in China, they were ripped off from the Cowichan band and they have yet to see a single yet or honorable mention from the Bay or the Olympic Committee!

I adore this commercial, i am french from Quebec and of course into all this separatist stuff. But for once i can say it loud and strong. Go canada!

Awesome commercial, I had to smile when I saw the HB jacket, and as an Aboriginal person I am proud to be Canadian.
FYI: The HBC played a major role in OUR history...
Go (Kanata) CANADA!

Beats the heck out of the Roots stuff, I think.

Way to enforce Canadian stereotypes. *snicker*

corporate sponsorship is what makes it possible for our athletes to compete on the world stage. speaking of which, I just ordered my red mittens online, 60% of proceeds goes to our athletes.

BronstedGolf 2 years ago 6
I can not believe the ignorance of this video that igores the fact that people lived here in what is now Canada long before the Hudson's Bay company and "pioneers". Its really an awful video and I'm embarassed as a Canadian that our First Peoples of Canada and their contribution has been completely ignored. Come on people!!! Be fair !

it's a commerical to market thier clothing not a history lesson- really.
The concept is great for a commerical.

I hope the "native" inspired sweaters are MADE IN CANADA. 100% and helped our textile workers as you can be sure they did not have native canadian knitters make them. Go Canada! the best to all competitors non-corporate that is. LOL!

The hand made Cowichan sweater is made in canada and cost around $300:( They also have a cheap version which is not hand made and cost around $100.
nobase 2 years ago
they're not Cowichan sweaters, they're imitations.

Very catchy commercial, and the music is an excellent choice.
And I like that it has a few throwbacks to Canadian history. It's a nice touch.
I'm fairly ambivalent on some of the clothing, but I'll probably buy a nice Maple Leaf scarf to show national spirit.
But mostly, the music is awesome.

I'd be caring more if HBC was still Canadian owned.

about 70,000 Canadians work for the comapny in Canada... so maybe you should care...

didnt HBC get bought by an American company?

This company never ceases to amaze me. If you worked for HBC you would understand the pride and the Canadian connection. What an amazing commercial. Kudos for all HBC has put into the 2010 Canadian Winter Olympic games.

Great job HBC. Go Team Canada!

Too bad HBC isn't a Canadian-owned company anymore. And it's tobogganing ...not sledding (Americanism). But nice commercial otherwise ;)

Why wouldn't we get a Canadian company to make our uniforms? HBC is American owned-and-operated.
mikeberard 2 years ago
please be more informed, also read my comments. Try to get into the spirit of things and be less negative. The athletes need your positivity, don't be a downer.
datura1980 2 years ago 4
this is about the olympics, not the hudsons bay company. what a ridiculous ad, and what disgustingly ugly uniforms. ROOTS SHOULDN'T HAVE LOST THEIR CONTRACT.
