That's the first vlog I've watched in awhile that I've really enjoyed, I was about to give up on my learning but I think you may have inspired me to keep going with this. ありがとう!
I have devoted the past 8 years of my life to Japanese..I majored in it..and have lived in Japan for 3 years..so I can tell you with confidence..you are a joke. There are actual more levels of Japanese..not 2...casual..polite..humble..modest..honorific language. You have terrible pronunciation..and after watching some of your other videos...are translating things wrong..you may say..who are you Bitch...I am the Bitch who passed the ACTFL OPI and WPT Advanced High...look it up...I am guessing you
@Heartilly856 OOOh we're all so envious of you. Why don't you relax and be happy for him, I know I am. And his pronunciation isn't that bad. Not everyone has the opportunities you have had (thanks to your rich parents, no doubt).. Regardless of your arrogant and meaningless opinion, his accomplishments are admirable. If you are so fluent and accomplished, why are you watching a video like this? Stupid twat...
THIS IS ME RIGHT NOW! You said you got so much into the Japanese culture through Anime. Same with me. I watch so many and or read so much anime/mangas it's crazy. And i'm just at the beginning of learning how to Speak Japanese AND the summer of my senior year i plan on going to Japan all summer. Then after collage moving there and becoming a Manga artist or international translator >.< JAPAN YEAH <3
oh my gosh, you're like inspiring :D I really wanted to learn Japanese..just listening to this awesome video you really motivated me to learn Japanese by myself instead of taking regular classes. You got into UCLA and just hearing how your passion for this language really made a difference, I am really inspired by this video. Thank you so much, I really hope I can learn Japaneese as fast as you could. x'D
You don't know how much this meant to me... Your story was SPOT on to my life. With the only difference of my parents being divorced. I'm stuck on the pimsleur stage though... Thank you very much!
Anime can help you get some Japanese but I would not suggest learning Japanese through anime from scratch. The reason is anime uses a ton of rarely used words and sentence structures. Plus, remember these are cartoons aimed at 8 year olds. The Japanese spoken in things like Naruto, One Piece, etc. is extremely crude and makes you sound like a 6 year old if you try to reproduce it. It's not without its merits but I would advice caution.
That's pretty much that way I came to like subs too. To be precise, a friend of mine lent me a whole bunch of bleach episodes (60 - 166) and everyone of them turned out to be subbed but prior to that I was watching dubbed so it did seem like a let down at first but just a couple of episodes later, I was crazy for subbed!
Been an year since I've learned japanese, my kanji toll turned out - ~110
and I guess I've covered the basic grammar/vocab though not nearly enough to fully understand anime.
I lost inspiration to learn Japanese since I found it really hard to read and pronounce, but since I found your video I want to learn Japanese again. I will try to use your method.
Inuyasha was one of my favorite anime and yes I got addicted with the language just by watching anime. ^_^ I learned some common words. What made me disappointed sometimes is the grammar of the english subtitles T_T Thanks for sharing and inspiring people with this video. How anime helped you and all that.God Bless and more power..Looking forward for your future amazing videos! ^_^ Thank you so much! You Rock!
Awesome Video, You should definitely finish up that casual course thing your working on. I love anime and mostly all things Japanese. I know what you means about realizing some on your dreams because I also wanted to visit Prague. Went to see it last year and was overwhelmed with emotion when I entered the city :)
Mostly everything that you have I already kneww T.T I hate when that happens. I tries Rosetta Stone too T.T It's not worth the money, really. But, right now, I'm good with the anime thing haha, I've learned enoguh that I can watch anime and know at least 3/4 of what is going on without the subs.
How did you get these manga transcripts? I try looking that stuff up with no real results.
Also, this word frequency analysis you did...did you do that by hand? By yourself, I mean? It just sounds so "official" like you have a program that did if for you.
Anyway thanks for sharing this, I've been learning Japanese for 3 years in High school to no real avail, sadly, so I will try your way.
I really want to learn japanese but I don't know how I get started. I'm fairly new to all this anime stuff. Ok when I was younger I watched Pokemon and stuff but I started to watch anime with jap dub and eng sub about 2 month ago. I understand some things already but it isn't enough. I really like the way u came up to learn japanese. U just got a new subscriber!
It's so weird. It's like I'm seeing myself in a mirror. I tried the exact same methods (in the exact same order) to learn Japanese. Till now, the thought of learning this language wouldn't leave my head, but I lacked confidence to put myself together and do it. Thank you for your inspirational video, it really kick-started me.
Hi! I just ran into your video and I'm pleasantly surprised. I would like to someday learn Japanese, come still seems to me impossible. I am very resistant to foreign languages. I barely speak English ... But you inspired me. So thank you for that. You know, sometimes I watch anime and I like that language but doesnt completely have time for this. I hope that watching from time to time, your videos will help me somehow to implement and gain a greater motivation to learn. Thanks! ; *
I can relate to you big timee ^.^ I was bullied like crazy to the point that I wouldnt go outside because I didn't trust anyone, its only now that I actually do but very rarely, and anime brought me out of my shell and also taught me japanese ^.^ Glad to see someone else has a similar story :D:D x
Thanks for doing such an inspiring, honest and down to earth video! I love anima and all things Japanese, I train in judo and jiu-jitsu and have been thinking for so long that I would love to learn Japanese and go and live/train in Japan. Your video has just made me decide to learn! :)
EXACTLY How i was in Middle school I LOVE Anime and wanted to learn Japanese. Now im Going College and Didnt have much time i did try Rosseta Stone But you know not the best experince i ever had. I Love Almost everthing about Japan. This video is reallly Motivating. I currently know English,Chinese,Spainish, And always wanted to Learn Japanese.
you just described exactly how I feel! I was going to buy rosetta, but it's like 500 :( so I got books but I find them too easy and they dont explain certain questions I have about the language and such. This is exaaaactly what I've been looking for! and probably what a lot of others have been looking for too. Thank you so much! I can't wait to start it now :)
So weird I got into anime a LOT and still love it and wanted to learn japanese and loved everything japanese and want to go to Japan so bad, I also started out on Rosetta stone and got as far as the colors which It was starting the sentences and it doesn't explain anything or sentence structurs, just a month ago I bought pemsleur approach lol and it gets boring fast haha
Thank you so much! I've been trying to learn japanese, but have lost a little of my determination. I love so many anime, but have wanted to understand what they were saying without subtitles. Your story has inspired me to continue on with my dream to learn as many languages as possible! Thank you! xD
Just curious, where did you stay when you were in Japan? I've lived in Hokkaido for 2 months, but I've wanted to go to Kyoto for a while. What prefecture did you stay in? I'd love to hear about it.
i always end up getting english dubbed due to .. small tv = too busy starting at the subtitles if in the japanese... one anime i love (ao no exorcist) is not in english.. and i only understood "swear" words and a couple others .. lol.. one swear/curse word wasnt mentioned in the subtitle xD.. .. Why does it take so long to learn this lanuage.. i can read and write most hirigana and katakana.. but as i cant speak the language.. i no idea what im read or say or write ... lol
Thank you so much for posting this video! Your story is so inspiring! and I'm so happy you got to live your dream and go to Japan! \(*0*)/ I'm currently trying to learn japanese... but it's so hard! D: And I feel like it's going to take me forever to learn japanese... but after watching this video, you have inspired me, and GOSH DARNIT I will learn this language!!!!!! And I will live my dream and go to Japan and SPEAK JAPANESE!!!!!!! >:D ....peace.
wow im just in 1:50 of the video and you sound soooooooooo much like me when i was a kid. i started with sailor moon but follow up with dbz. i learn about Japanese when naruto came on toonami.
O MAI, U CANT UNDERSTAND HOW HAPPY YOU JUST MADE ME you see with small veariations you told my life story. im curently in high school waching all the popular stuff, learning basic japanese from naruto. I CANT BELIVE THIS. if you have time could you send the 300 list to me plzzzzz
aw you're so adorable lol you should totally post a link to those words! i pick up language easily & learned some japanese from anime as well but i'd really love to be actually fluent! dattebayo! ;]
I totally love anime I first started watching it in japanese then watched it in english and it sounded horrable,i want to learn japanese because I love it <3, ANIME is a gift from God, also I would also want to watch it without all those subtitles in the way, I hope this will help me lot, Oh and I think you might be a good teacher. ;D
I understand learning from watching anime. I, myself, have found when I watch subbed anime-which is a WHOLE lot better than dubbed- I began to pick up words in Japanese here and there. Japan is one of the dream places that I would love to visit. And seeing that you have been able to do it has inspired me to try even harder to learn Japanese. :)
Ouh!! arigatou!!! now i'll b able 2 learn japanese much more easier cuz its true it gets annoying 2 having 2 read the subs oUo now i think majoring in japanese will b easier ^^
thats kinda what happend to me, I started learning japanese from anime and i really didnt even noticed XD im finnaly starting to learn to speak japanese
lol its so frustrating when i watch anime with sub titles i don't even notice them and its like i completely understand Japanese but then at the end of a show i realize there subtitles and cant understand it again >.<
I tried using Heisig's method to learn japanese for a few months because ive heard nothing but good things about it but for some reason i just can't get it..
One of the best ways to learn Japanese is to "THINK" in Japanese. I dont mean thinking to yourself in Japanese. However, I mean, think about the sentence structure (subject object verb). First, say it to yourself in English, then then break it up into Japanese-English (japangrish?), THEN attempt to say it in Japanese. As soon as I realized this, it helped me out a lot.
I wish you could share the magical 300 word list... I've wanted to learn Japanese for YEARS and I downloaded software programs online and oh my gosh.. SO BORING...
@flipballaz93 yes but learning to speak through anime is probably the most exciting and fun way to jump in. it is less overwhelming than a giant text book and more rewarding at first. once you find yourself understanding a lot of what they're saying in animes your confidence is probably a lot higher towards learning japanese. that's when you can jump into your list. but it's definitely different for every person. so there really is no "proper" way to learn ANY language.
@evieberrie kenkyanon's method is that u watch anime with subs then quickly after that u watch it again without subs , but who wants to repeat an anime episode? besides hiragana and katakana is learn by flash cards something that kindergartens can do. i also advise romaji is bad for learning japanese as there is no benefit only good for singing in karaoke lol
@flipballaz93 hmm..i didn't realize that was the exact method. to me that does seem a little annoying, but to a very hardcore anime fan maybe it doesn't? but again, if this helped him, maybe it will help others. you cannot argue that this was BAD for him. and he liked him, and you cannot argue that he didn't learn SOMETHING. if this was the only way he could stay persistent about learning the language, then good for him.and when does he say all he learned was romaji?
Awesome man, I just moved to Japan and I studied Japanese in highschool for 2 years and some rosetta stone and books etc, but when I got here and tried to speak people looked at me weird im learning that almost all I learned is not used at all and when people speak it is jiberish. Really frustrating all I can use is some verbs and nouns and it is not at all hardcore sentence structure like I learned so hopefully this will get me going with immersion so. Awesome story man.

Thanks! ; *

I was going to buy rosetta, but it's like 500 :( so I got books but I find them too easy and they dont explain certain questions I have about the language and such. This is exaaaactly what I've been looking for! and probably what a lot of others have been looking for too. Thank you so much! I can't wait to start it now :)

Why does it take so long to learn this lanuage.. i can read and write most hirigana and katakana.. but as i cant speak the language.. i no idea what im read or say or write ... lol

As soon as I realized this, it helped me out a lot.

hearing and understanding the japanese language in anime is not enough although its probably fun...
the properly understand the japanese language use this formula in order
HIRAGANA
KATAKANA
KANJI
READ AND UNDERSTAND JAPANESE DIALOUGE
LISTEN JAPANESE
THEN SPEAK JAPANESE!!!!!!!!!!
I WISH YOU GOOD LUCK
flipballaz93 2 months ago
@flipballaz93 yes but learning to speak through anime is probably the most exciting and fun way to jump in. it is less overwhelming than a giant text book and more rewarding at first. once you find yourself understanding a lot of what they're saying in animes your confidence is probably a lot higher towards learning japanese. that's when you can jump into your list. but it's definitely different for every person. so there really is no "proper" way to learn ANY language.
evieberrie 2 months ago
@evieberrie kenkyanon's method is that u watch anime with subs then quickly after that u watch it again without subs , but who wants to repeat an anime episode? besides hiragana and katakana is learn by flash cards something that kindergartens can do. i also advise romaji is bad for learning japanese as there is no benefit only good for singing in karaoke lol
flipballaz93 2 months ago
