I am torn between the Kindle or Kobo reader. I like the Kindle more but I am a little turned off by the propriatary nature of the device but the Kobo feels a little to generic...
i need help with mine. i bought one of those, but havent used it in 6 months. when i turn it on it says battery is empty and when i charge it, nothing happens. it still says my battery is empty. think you can help???????
can I put my own books in pdf format in to that device? or I can only download from internet? I mean can I use a USB to put my veterinary books in it?
Very good point on the price of ebooks. However, in reality the magazines and newspapers are not much cheaper at all and sometimes lack the full content of the print versions. This is very upsetting, especially when you can just go to the web site of the respective paper/mag and subscribe for even less than the ebook price AND get more content. Publishers are just raping the ebook crowd now...
i think having two different models (one touch and one with keypad) would be a good investment for amazon because you'll find that lots of people want a touchscreen and lots of people don't. also if you don't like the screen size then go for the kindle XL, much bigger screen. anyway, thanks john for the review, you give great info.
good review, but i'm gonna have to disagree with using a blackberry ball. those things get dirty and usually end up breaking. also the reason why the new bb bold 9700 doesn't use it.
oh, and about when u said that it should have a touchsreen, the problem with that is that the glare from the oil is very noticeable, like if u look at ur iphone in the sun..
And, it would get dirty from things that u touch before.
I really hope they dont go touchscreen, in fact I hope nobody every goes touchscreen agai. You just get a bunch of fingerprints, I def dont want that for an ebook. Also, I just think its a lot easier to type with buttons.
I agree. It would be bad, because it would probably have to be electronic too, and it would ruin your eyes. Like starring at the lap top and TV screen all day isn't bad enough. Also it would be hart to read with fingertips all over it.
A touch screen would not be very effective, as it would increase the glare and decrease the battery life, as it would not be able to use the battery saving technology.
Also, you mentioned it was black and white, does this include covers?
I am really interested in the kindle ... If I buy it I will use the text to speech function allot (Dyslexic). But can you use tts on the browser? on wikipedia for instance?
Also immum, if you are dyslexic, I think a better bet would be to get an iPod and some audiobooks, seeing as they are designed to be only listened to for long periods of time, unlike the mechanical voice of Text-To-Speech Voices on any device in existence currently.
jeah ... the thing is ... I do use audio books alot but. for instance my school books are not available in audio book format. you don't find allot of c++ or other programming books in audio book format. What I have been doing is getting the pdf or doc version of each book from the publisher and highlight in os x the section I am reading and use tts in os x. Even though the robotic voice is annoying, being able to read at a normal rate is well kinda priceless.
The only thing that worries me is if the Sprint book downloading service is free or not or if you have to pay like a monthly bill like a contract with them. Any one know?
I will wait till the Kindle sells for $99 before I buy one. Think about it: $300 for the kindle plys $10 per book? Thats a huge investment that you will never recoup.
Actually, it is worth the price and you will eventually recoup its cost. Not all books are $10, many older books are cheaper then that. I tend to think of it as an iPod for books... iPods that have good storage cost more. This device is definitely worth the cost... if you read a lot. If you wait for one that is $99, you will be waiting forever. Or will buy a cheap version that will not be worth it!
Well Im sure they will come down to at least $199. Besides I want to wait because it seems most electronic gadgets take the 3rd generation before the engineers get it right.
Touchscreen would just lower the quality of the text. Like, the Sony PRS-700 the screen has a haze to it, and it glares in sunlight, because of the touchscreen. Sure better navigation would be nice, but no touchscreen.
I've read that there may be issues with an inordinate number of typos in ebooks offered by Amazon (far more than in print versions of the same books). Have you noticed a problem with numerous misspellings in the content you've downloaded, Jon?
I want a Kindle 2 so bad. I do agree that the keyboard on it takes up a lot of unnecessary space on the device..... but I think I could get over that pretty easily. I'm all in it for the "fun factor" that you mentioned...... being able to read books on an electronic device...... it just seems so cool..... I can't wait to get one.
Hey John good review thanks. Second would you still recommend buying it. Price is kinda hefty, also do you think it might be better to go with the dx or is the screen size big enough?
Can you somehow send PDFs on your computer to the kindle?
Because I have actually found very few textbooks(2) which I wouldn't want to lug around. So would I be able to send it, I dont wan to spend 60 bucks on a virtual textbook.
I have two quick questions, first is, are there any restrictions to the internet [as far as what sites I may go on, such as Myspace or Facebook or even Twitter], also, I think in this video or in another you mentioned a Newspaper only being 25 cents when I look at the Kindle store on Amazon there are only subscription optionswhich are about $12, am I looking in the wrong place?

It's perfect to buy if you absolutely need it.
It's not too bad in cost quality.

Thanks for posting these videos. I had sent you a reply tweet about the iPhone app when you were contemplating your purchase, and your unboxing actually made me want one. So I bought it. Nice video, as always.
