Thank Dean for making this a hit. After Jan's accident, Liberty Records tried to keep the Jan & Dean hit string going by releasing "Norwegian Wood" as a single. Dean felt a three-year old album track, "Popsicle Truck," was a better choice and talked the label into letting him remix it and put it on the flip side of "Norwegian Wood." Dean then went out and promoted the newly renamed "Popsicle" side and sure enough, DJs flipped the single over and made "Popsicle" a hit in the summer of 1966.
Ah Yes, "Sandy Bubble Gum" music at it's finest! The harmonies, drums, fun lyrical content...need I say more? If you weren't born to Motown were the "Gearhead" was born and nurtured you're a "Gearhead by proxy! Believe me when I say Jan and Dean "Gearhead" songs will be forever etched as they say...love 'em but for some reason this and "New Girl in School" really kick me square! Burn Up That Quarter Mile J&D Gearheads.........
Jan Berry was almost as a great a music arranger as Brian Wilson. He was in pre-med before he got into his near fatal accident in his Corvette in 1967. Unfortunately he was never was the same again. Too bad.
Oh what a fun happy song. . my sisthers and I would spend part of our allowance on popsicles. I loved my popsicles but loved / love Jan Berry even more ....and Dean too he was and is very cool too. Rock on Dean. RIP my sweet Jan.
@nymanjohn Actually, they recorded this song quite a while before the accident, but after the accident...Liberty wanted to put a record out...they chose one of the songs Jan & Dean had recorded not too long before..."Norweign Wood"...Dean, however, wanted the flipside of that 45 to be the released song...(this Popsicle) so he went in and starred the flipside of all the 45's so DJ's would play this...and it worked!! it made it to the record charts!!
This hot girl got in her car and I thought I'd see her again at some point. To this song I sang to myself "Remember VC 2104, remember that plate and you'll remember what for." I never saw her or the car with that plate again. That was 30 years ago. I know it means nothing.
@ezpowerequipment Jan had a siezier that most likely bough on the heart attack. After the car acident one of the side affects was Jan would get sieziers sometimes.
Popsicles were a favorite back in this era when Jan & Dean were tops. They came in many flavours, two popsicles joined together about 4 inches long..you'd be careful and break 'em apart...separate them so you could share one of them. They costed only 6 cents for the thru the sixties and were found at any corner store. Jan & Dean are tops with me, they even did other artists hit songs in their style, thanks4 sharing!
I grew up with this music from Jan and Dean, good oldies...Always loved their tunes..Cheers..

Jan & Dean belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
They had many hits, fans and helped to create sounds that were legendary.
J&D and the Beach Boys created the California surf sound that helped to define the 1960's.
I shake my head at some of the acts already in the Hall.
Many did not do half of what Jan & Dean did.
