@CaptainRetardify I can kinda see where you're coming from, but I think the prog epicness on some of their other stuff would mess up the vibe of this song. Sometimes a simple, direct delivery gets the message through. But if you want complexity in this song, listen to the production. Beautifully detailed ambience.
Porcupine Tree is a wonderfully dark exponent of progrock. It's slightly less raw than Dream Theatre, with more room for synth and strings. I like that a lot. I recently (last week!) discovered their work, after having heard of the band through my local classic rock radiostation. I find it equally good as Genesis and Yes, which I have admired for a long time.
@DasBurka It's a Dutch radiostation called Arrow Classic Rock. Every tuesday evening they air a 2 hour show containing just prog rock, and every night, between 12 pm and 6 am, they air a combination of common rock and obscure songs, such as PT's Arriving Somewhere But Not Here. Others include Genesis, Yes, Supertramp, Arena, King Crimson, Dream Theatre, Camel, Van der Graaf Generator, UK, Kayak, Focus, Supersister, Marillion, Uriah Heep, Pink Floyd, Kansas, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, etc.
@jobvink Wow, thats actually really cool. I'd pretty much given up on hearing these guys on the airwaves. They used to have Arrow here in LA but the went off the air a while ago. Still, at least somebody's playing them.
This is such a great song, it captures really well that sick feeling of being rejected by someone you have feelings for. Rejection or not being wanted has to be the worst feeling you can have. No one on the planet is worth more than your own peace within yourself, protect it at all times.
They say Rush is a cult band, but I think Porcupine Tree is a real cult band. The more you listen to them, no matter what order of songs you listen to, the more they grow on you. Not even Rush has that effect for me, as good as they are.
Sometimes few words together are capable of making as fly.. On a dream or somewhere else. It's just so many pictures that this song is carrying out... ;)
Sends shivers down my spine every time I am privileged to listen to it. What can I say ... PT are one of those rare bands that come along and for the minority who are prepared to listen to good music, they stand out like a pillar of light.
if you hear the "thanks" at the end thats Richard barbieri thanking steven wilson for writing a song and expressing what he couldn't. How agonizing it was but how he moved on in the end and laughed about it after it was said and done.
it reminds me of my exboyfriend, who made me feel real low by showing me each day while we were "together", that I didn't exist for him, no calls,... same story...
glad i got rid of him and I can laugh about it now...
I usually live at 140 plus BPM, and know nothing of this band. This track i found by accident on a friends podcast, WOW....
SO SO BEAUTIFUL.....

I don't care for this song but I like their other stuff like Waiting, Anesthesize, shesmovedon, don't hate me etc... I guess it lacks complexity?

I just noticed that "so low" is like "solo".
On top of feeling low, he feels lonely, or like he's solo.
I don't know if that was intended, but I love it nonetheless.

@Drunkwraith To be honest, the first time I listened to PT, it was like
"OH no, this band is fucking boring......."
But now, PT is one of my favourite band along with YES, PoS, Anathema, Genesis.....
po24244908 1 year ago 3
@po24244908 I hate to admit it, but the first time I listened to them, I was like:
"Oh, fuck, not that boring shit again"
But something drew me back, and the fourth time was:
"Well, this is pretty cool, I guess"
And around the 10th time:
"This is one of the best bands ever!"
Yeah, they're a grow on you band, xD

We've all been there...
I wonder how much this song was influenced by the track "Leb' Wohl" by Neu!, since Signify was based on "Hallogallo" by that band.
