The reason that the american market does not have a lot of diesel cars is because the diesel quality is poorer than in europe. Only the latest years its have been posible with modern diesel cars on the american market, due to better diesel quality. I think american car manufacturers are very conservative when it comes to new thechnology in cars. Still producing large V8 engines. Check out the VW 1,4 gas engine. (supercharger + turbo, 170 hp)
@to88he Also we have an assload of environmental laws that are imposed every time a new diesel comes to the US from damn hippies. The Mercedes Bluetech diesel just barely made it through, even though its quieter and produces less pollution then a gas engine. It would be a lot better if all those V8 gas engines that they put in trucks were diesels.
The CRDi is very noisy engine (3cyl). My uncle had one in india almost a DECADE ago. but I heard very good things about the jetta's new one (since 2009)- no urea inj, 50state compliant, etc. I still consider Fiat diesels (multijet, soon in US with chryslers) as the benchmark. Still very interested in the jetta / the ncc platform for now, though.
i must tell you that i have an hyundai santa fe with the 2.0L CRDI 112hp. Well not much power and it doesn´t have a big to speed (about 180km/h) but i must tell you that it is quiet than an TDI engine.
I belive the best diesel engine at the moment is the PSA HDI engine! Fiat´s multijet are very good too.
anyway, if you want to spend less money on fuel buy an diesel engine but, if what you want is driving pleasure, buy an gasoline engine
we´r probably not talking about the same engine. The one i had in the Santa Fé was a 2.0 L 4 cil. it wasn´t very powerfull but it was more quiet and smothe than VW TDI engine.
Btw, i have a mercedes C class CDI now and its so much better than the TDI
I love when they explain things you have no way of verifying, comparing against other vehicles or even understanding. They are mostly just making things up
Dull as dog shit.

It's nice that it cuts off the fuel pump in an impact but I think most newer cars do that. As a matter of fact I think they're required to.

The best diesel engines are D series from bmw and CRDI from hyundai/kia
TDI´s makes a lot of noise and smoke
