Mr.Donati if you are reading this i am a guitar player and you are so good you make me want to buy a drum kit and learn some drumming so inspiring. You and Dave Weckl are my favorite drummers of all time.
U could say Virgil all together has better feet for sure. But who cares I love them both for who they are. If they played the same it would be stupid. Drums was never a competition every guy has something to offer. Even a beginner.
oh yeeesshh. Unless you're writing a paper for dissection there's no need to compare Jojo with Virgil. If either wanted to play like the other they probably could in matter of months. They play what the like and practice accordingly. Seems like more and more people get off on making music a competitive sport.
Just want to put this out there... Jojo has great single pedal technique, the man is phenomenal, but considering what Virgil consistently demonstrates with his feet, isn't it fesible that he would be able to play the same single pedal stuff as Jojo? There's no evidence of this, I know, because Donati plays double kick. Just making an observation.
vergil is one of the best technisons in the world..iv been to many of his shows and seen him many times and met him at drum fest in nova scotia halifax..speed is shit if you dont got technique.
jojo has amazing foot technique too but there is so much more that virgil can do with his feet, but of course virgil's hand technique can't compare to jojo's
You're right! Jojo is drummer with the best technique in the world, for the hands for sure, but for the feet, maybe, for single pedal yes, but for double, I don't think so, but he didn't use double, so who cares! :)
I had the pleasure of meeting Dave Weckl a couple of years ago and he was quite nice, very happy to talk to me (and encourage me to practise more), which was really good.
He's an all round great drummer, spent some time in US doin drum core stuff I think. great with hands and feet, plus plays piano and composes original music. Also very fit.
i hear ya! look at a drummer like peter erskine, plenty fast, but soooo tasteful and dynamic. many who dont understand the art of drumming are impressed with speed. its a more visual gage to show talent. speed is always a great tool to have but it is only one of many. dynamics, feel and groove take so much longer to develop and are often overlooked..overlooked by the people who dont fully understand the art of drumming.
Yep!Most snare drummers are horrible drumset players since 90% of the greatest challenges are mental instead of pysicall. Its not mentally challenging to do basic snare rudiments.Speed is mastered by technique.

Jojo Mayer has better hand technique but Virgil has better foot technique

jojo has better foot technique too, and btw he can do a roll with one foot on a single pedal and i don't think virgil can do that..

Isnt Dave Weckl pretty odd too? Virgil strikes me as very kind, understanding, and a good teacher! Simply a fresh air as hes so down to earth!

I hear Virgil has drumsticks instead of bones.
Talk about someone born to be a drummer.
Where did I put that bloody harmonica!

he has great technique, makes me wonder if he marched Drum Corps :P
snaredice 3 years ago
nah, but he was taught by some of the jazz masters, who were very involved with rudimental stuff.

wow bindoy you are really dumb! you must be talking about marching snare?
gabeskilz 4 years ago
there are tons of "SnareDrummers" out there who are faster than virgil donati...but there snareDrummersONLY.

speed is relative and it doesn't depend on how fast somebody can go
in my opinion many drummers believe in speed but forget about playing precisely or dynamically...
Evans817 4 years ago 18
yes! thankyou! i cant stand when dickheads only want to go fast, they are shit, you need the precision and stuff...
