  • Heard this on Life On Mars the tv program .. now im obsessed! :L

  • favourite band of the 70's. Don't care how popular they were of if my friends don't know who they were. To me, legend since I was 9, I'm 16 now.

  • This was one of my Mothers favorite records, and it had to be played at all her parties,

is there anyone out there that remembers Aunty June from Pulrose?

    The Queen of Pully.

This brings back some very good memories.

    Thanks for posting this video.

  • ... dear god.... this is my birthday-#1 song?

I like rock music very much, and I can appreciate glam-rock, but this.... dear god.

    LOL

  • Jean Genie, Blockbuster. Which came first? Who owns the riff?

  • @richie1957aus It's basically a pretty universal blues riff sped up. Check out Bo Diddley, I'm A Man (1955). And Muddy Waters' response to it, Mannish Boy, which gave Bowie the name of one of his early bands. (Waters also gave the Rolling Stones their name.)

The Blockbuster thing appears to be a genuine coincidence. They came out little more than a month apart. Search "Nicky Chinn: Oh, absolute coincidence" in quotes.

  • @richie1957aus common glam riff...jean genie was first tho

  • @u2bdetox - Feb. 8th 73

  • My wife has just walked in and said "Why do you have to listen to such shit music?"

    Silly slag!

  • @HammerLex77 I love her really!

  • @HammerLex77 : Back in the kitchen!

  • @gabugosu Too right - I've even cut her toes off so she can get closer to the sink!

  • @HammerLex77 , After reading your comment (laughing), I have to recommend a audio on youtube titled "SWEET - I'm A Boy - Live 1973". They replaced a couple of the intro lyrics, reminded me of the last 2 words in your post, hahaha!

  • @HammerLex77 .....So why you still married , you cannot have anything in common..

you got taste ! , my guess is she goes out and dresses in the latest rip off fashions

that cost $5 to produce but she wants to pay $300 for them ,,and wastes all your money , and is still not satisfied....

they are all the same dude .. quarter of a brain shared between them all

  • Brian Connolly A Legend. R.I.P.

  • Mick Tucker, one of the most underrated drummers ever

  • @ian40 Amen to that!

  • One of Sweet's biggest hits in the Netherlands. They were and are so underrated...

  • Shud listen to the albums nowt like the glam stuff !! Memories of being a 13 yr old at my old mate puddung from bromwich. Still got the original albums !!!!

  • R.I.P

    Mick

  • @Moparmissile. Show some intelligence. They are not related and they were born within a year of each other. F'ing idiot! Oh and Merry Christmas (take him a new brain Santa).

  • I think the lead singer modelled himself on Sally Carr, from Middle of the Road.

  • @2012Aragorn Dude, Sally Carr is Brian Connolly's daughter. Show some respect man.

  • @2012Aragorn Was that before or after he slept with her?

  • @2012Aragorn maybe she modelled after him!

  • Sweet were so under rated they had some g8 songs

  • @rus524 For someone who claims to hate these guys so much you sure are obsessed with them. Every video i watch theres a comment from you.

  • fuckin rockin, kids in bands today could take a lot from this instead of all dressing like students or farm labourers

  • so much fun

  • Block Buster, the Sweet, my inviting to the Rock ('n Roll) !!

  • My dad worked for them.

  • I love The Sweet. The boot boys in my town used to kick off a fight at the disco when Blockbuster came on and ruin everyone's night. Most of them are either dead, on benefits or in prison now. Ha ha

  • @skaworld509 Sorry to hear that but there always has to be a few eh? I never experienced anything like that when it was being played only in 1983 when JoBoxers boxbeat was playing i experienced a massive brawl in my fave pub the song was banned from being played in there after that as the pub had to be closed for a whole week for refurbishment :/

  • why should i do that. maybe you should stop looking into your boyfriends arse when he fucks you . now stop boring me you thick cunt.

  • All this stuff about who stole what from whom peaks at it's most ridiculous high when John Otway did this, you just have to pop over and check him out :-)

  • Real boys liked Slade ...

  • @Izznogood63 and old men too, those where the days....

  • Does anyone know the way? There's got to be way, TO BLACK BASTARD!

  • The Jean Genie by David Bowie v Blockbuster by Sweet.

The riffs are slightly different with The Jean Genie's riff being "bowmp bowmp bowmp buh-DAH-duh" whereas "Blockbuster"s is "ba-domp ba-domp ba-domp ba-DA-duh"....But as Harry Hill says, there's only one way to sort this out....FIGHT!!!!"

  • @shirtcreek I'd LOVE to see that fight! Who would fight who, though? Brian obviously can't fight David... but if it's riffs you're after, maybe Andy Scott should fight Mick R... oh, wait...

  • @shirtcreek Yeah but Blockbuster was recorded in 1972 so was it before Jean Genie. Both had rca in common

  • @irishguy200007 I wasn't complaining, they're both great, now look what you've done, I've seen Mud, Sparks, Slade and Shawaddywaddy (Jimmy Savile used to kill me when he said that lol) on the list on the right...now I have to get all Glammed up and hit "play" all over again ;-) Cheers

  • @shirtcreek I believe they're both lifted from a Yardbirds song.

  • @GelGsound yup, and didn't they "borrow" it from Bo Diddley's "bad to the bone"?

The song is famous for its riff, which was used by many Blues and Rock musicians and probably still will be for years to come, slower or faster it's still brilliant...dah der da dum dum dum dum dum, dah der da dum etc ;-)

  • @shirtcreek Damn fine riff. It can be used 4 times and still be as fresh as the last. :)

  • @GelGsound There ought to be a competition to name a band that hasn't used it lol

  • Stupid question but did the video chain 'Blockbuster' ever use this song?

  • hey ho arsenal52100. i dont know these 2 who come on here. i have my opinion, its up to them what they write. now i agree with them , but end of day its up to them, free speech and all that, now its obvious you are a bigot, and a racist. so fuck off with the holier than thou attitude. you boring old twat

  • thumbs up if you heard this on life on mars and hot fuzz

  • Funny story, came out about the same as Bowies Jean Genie. Both had similar riffs yet this went number 1 and Jean Genie peaked at #2..When Bowie met Chinn, the writer, he said, in a dead pan face "c*nt!" then smiled and said "congratulations"...

  • @flippyflyer Wikipedia is wonderful :)

  • @boltthedoors indeed sir!!!!

  • de liedjes uit de 7 ties prachtig gewoon

  • @carlton754 Why don't you and your bumchum romulus go to sites where they play your shite music and let people relive their youth, the music may not be the best but they probably had a ball back then, unlike you and your lover romulus, who think it's you're taste and everybody else is wrong.By the way don't assume I'm old just because I think all people have the right to enjoy whatever music they like.Just don't kid yourself that you are right and everyone else is wrong, then you are sad.

  • It sounds like a mix of Immigrant Song and Jean Genie

  • @oldrichflorian yes!!

  • The very worst of alcoholism destroyed Brian Connolly ; very sad to see his condition on Youtube in a documentary just the year before he died ; it was awful. Sad that Mick Tucker has gone as well

  • @romulus406 you re out of your mind , the sweet were one of the best band .Indeed Connoly drank himself to death , but what did you know about the history of this band .June 74 , Connoly was beaten out the daylight of his eyes , some guys kicked him so hard in the throat that some keys of the songs were to high for him , Steve take over the leadsong .From that point , Brian got depressed and began to drank too much .And Tucker was killied by leukemie
