To the negative comments about this video - Alexander Technique is not a cult nor does it represent cultist techniques. It is a method for healing and learning how to use the body in a healthful manner. It is especially useful for musicians and dancers who are dealing with injury, but can certainly apply to anyone.
1:31 That is about the most beautiful look I've ever seen anyone give to someone.... She reminds me of Liza Minnelli - which can be taken as a compliment, by the way ;)
@maplebanks you should see the rest of the video. It's an hour and 50 minutes. This lady is hilarious. I was laughing so hard! She is just so serious that she can't help but be funny!
It seems that though the Alexander Technique has helped their posture and mental clarity, it has been highly detrimental to their presenting abilities.
So.... basically to cut a long story short, stand up straight, its good for the spine, wow, enough of this pretentious bullshit, she cant even turn her head properly to look at the guy, doesn't look very natural to me.
You aren't taught this in high school because the system appreciates the way things have been going on for the last thousand years. One has to discover ways outside the way things are taught you. Thank God for the internet. The Alexander Technique is awesome. You are taught to change for the better.
@MrGrevy First of all, if you're only interested in discounting the Alexander Technique, please stop posting. Secondly, I'm not fat but I have experienced an Alexander lesson and I don't see why fat people couldn't use or make use of this technique.
@Leopardsand Wow. Defensive much? How could you possibly conclude that if I ask whether overweight people can use the techniques, that it means I'm discounting it? I just wondered. Sheesh.
@MrGrevy That's not what I'm saying. I looked at your other comments and they seemed like you only wanted to make AT sound like a bunch of woo-woo crap that isn't scientifically supported. My comments on discounting AT and about overweight people are completely separate from each other.
@Leopardsand Well is it scientifically supported? I'm not saying it's worthless if it isn't, but have there been peer reviewed studies on this? Sorry, please don't get mad or defensive or accusatory, I'm just asking. (Maybe you need an Alexander Technique on how to be polite??)
@MrGrevy As @shadowdancer894 said, there are peer reviewed research papers in the Journal of American Physical Therapy Association and in the British Medical Journal. In fact, you can find videos from the BMJ research here on Youtube (v=3GbwzqT9piU).
This woman is most definately neurotic. A calm soft voice does not cover up the fact you're a control freak, or make you seem more spiritual. I weep for her children.
sometimes it was hard to spot which of them was the academy award winning actor and which of them was doing flubbing lines in one take and noticeably reading off a teleprompter. lol.
harry56ful, just think of Alexander Technique to be similar to music lessons, a means to undo the unnecessary stuff you taught yourself to repeat by accident. Wouldn't it be cool to have an operating manual for learning movement skills? Some way to deal with effort, reactions and how to wipe the slate clean when you'd like to start from neutral without being limited by assumptions & routines? All of the content of spiritual awareness, without the religion attached...?
@MrGrevy There is currently peer reviewed research(since 2005) in the Journal of American Physical Therapy Association and the British Medical Journal.
Why do people who teach stuff like this speak in the same robotic calm manner. Tried calling a smoke help line once, it drove me mad. Instead of using a put on voice try speaking normal we are not babies.
Every Alexander teacher teaches in their own voice. There is something to be said for calming the person down, though. When I teach I sound like me; NYC accent and all! I agree with you that it's easier to hear someone when they speak in a more 'normal' voice.
Dear Watchdawg, Your comment sounds like one which comes from the person who has NO EXPERIENCE whatsoever on the subject he is making judgment about. Also my own experience regarding people who do weight lifting is different as I find their bodies often MORE RIGID comparing to people who practice 'softer methods' like Alexander Technique where STRENGTH is found through RELEASE OF THE TENSION IN THE MUSCLES rather than creating more of it like you weight lifters so often do.
No experience? So you are basically telling me that I am not a living human being? People get rigid due to training when they don't stretch their muscles properly. The Alexander technique is a stupid set of methods made up by some rich fool. Who the hell would want to walk around like that except for some rich pathetic person, it's inhumane.
this is what you need to have happen to you Watchdawg. You need to get into a car accident and smash your skull so hard into the windshield that it partially herniates disks in your neck. Then when you try to lift the lightest of weights you will scream and drop it. Your insurance (if you have it) wont cover your surgery or Chiro. using google you will search out alt health you will find stuff like Alexander, Feldenkrais and tai chi then you will try them and lose your know it all ignorant 'tude
@sivanova293 Mmmmm, sorry, it's just natural for me to be ignorant until something happens to me, only then will I start getting interested in this. Same with the system today, people won't wake up until they're out of jobs or if something else triggers them.
because it's a lucrative inside secretive industry, that is JUST now being exposed in the mainstream. there is no reason to teach children how to be free, it's the technique of the cattle herders, to keep most children supressed, to do the menial tasks, while .08% are chosen to become dynamic, trained, spokespeople of the media industry. Don't fool yourself.
Oh wow! are you THE Rodney Mullen pro Skateboarder!??? OH MY, well, I guess I should shut up and listen! I wish I had you as my History and ethics teacher, so confounding with insight!! oh wait, you are just misappropriating Rod's name for your own gain. Sadly, I guess you have to hide behind someone else's glory. Skateboarding died when you tried your first Kick-flip.
