Gates is prone to exaggeration. Listen at the end of his interview shortly after the incident (YT /watch?v=CpyOsUUA1BQ) when he purported being nominated as a CNN Hero. Gates is purposefully misstating his purported nomination as fact, according to CNN's website. Gates was invited to CNN to appear on the Black In America broadcast, nothing more!

Look, let's call the police and tell them you are breaking into your own home. You show your ID and then ask for the cop's name and badge #. He denies the request, but then puts you in handcuffs for reacting loudly to his denying your request for name and badge number.

Gates was only arrested after several warnings, and persistence in disruption; Gates wasn't denied Officer Crowley's badge no.; and witnesses, among them a black police Sergeant, confirm Crowley's account as reported. Moreover there appears to be an audio tape supporting Crowley's position, as detailed in the Huffington Post.
