Lol to all the people who prefer the movie version. I don't disagree that Emmy and Gerard are good singers in their own way, but it takes a lot more to be able to sing live on stage perfectly for weeks on end, as compared to having the comfort of being in a recording studio and being able to edit anything that doesn't sound quite right. Bearing in mind too that these characters were meant to be in OPERA - if you guys prefer Hollywood's pop 'opera', what are you doing watching Phantom?
@missussupersomething I agree. I used to like the movie version a lot because I had only seen it on stage once and so I barely remembered what it was like when I saw the movie for the first time. However, I watched the 25th anniversary production and realized that the movie wasn't as good. I'm not saying it's bad; Emmy and Gerard can sing. I hate when people say that neither of them can sing. Emmy actually did a pretty good job for only being 16 when the movie was filming.
i'm freaked out at 4:40 lol but i seriously HATE this! and i saw this first! it's fuckin jacked up! emmy and gerard sing way better and sarah sounds like there's a dick in her throat when she sings! THUMBS UP IF YOU AGREE! (:
Clearly, Michael Crawford (and most of the people who have done the on and off Broadway productions) are better singers, but I think the fact Gerard is not a life long, professionally trained singer fits the Phantom role perfectly.
I'd like to see Emmy Rossum hit notes like that, considering Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote this to specifically tailor to Sarah Brightman's vocal ability.
No, Butler can't sing, the computer can! All long and high notes in the filmversion er technically enhanced. Butler never could sing 'music of the night' live on stage. If you still think in case of the phantom 'handsome' is an issue... you just don't get the story.
@ShinyJewels04 Funny, you'd think if the phantom was meant to be handsome, the whole story would essentially be redundant then, seeing as I thought he was rejected all his life because his face was deformed. Hence the hiding away and the mask, and pretty much all the insanity. But I might have mistook 'Phantom' for something else, like maybe 'The Little Mermaid'.
@DAisbetter Have you see it live in the theatre? or just clips on youtube? If you have seen it live and still prefer the film, then you my friend are incredibly silly!! I LOVE the fim so much and really didnt think i would enjoy it on stage as much as the film, but my girlfrined got tickets for my birthday and i was just completly blown away, nothing can compare to the power of the music when its live, breath taking its just incredible, and the film just does not even compare a tiny little bit!
I usually nevr do this, but Rebecca Caine was so much better. She has a truely intoxicating Bel Canto style vibrato. I actually find Sarah's voice a little sceachy on that last note. (P.S. feel free to insult me. I've heard it all before.)
Screw you arsehole!!! Tell me where you live so I can come around and teach you a thing or two!! I'm gonna rip your head off and paint my garage door with your brains!!! ggrrrrrrrrr!!
Crawford and Brightman are without a doubt the best to play these roles. I saw this great musical first in New York and much later in Phila. Although the Philly cast was good, the original was the best !
As someone who has studied music at the collegiate level (and not that it takes an education to realize this), there are SO many other women who are more talented than Sarah Brightman. She was also entirely too old to play this part. I've always thought Michael Crawford is good entertainer. I'm sure it wouldn't haven't been as successful without him.
Michael Crawford is awesome and had the best voice and body movements I have ever seen. He totally turned on every woman in that audience and won every award in every city he ever performed this role in! I have seen several people live and for me MC is the one who made me fall in love with the show and I would go back IF MC EVER REPRISED IT! The shows okay but there have been a LOT of great Broadway shows. Michael though is a special performer that exudes a special charm. Just my opinion.
I used to not like Michael Crawford but I actually don't mind him *too* much anyone. I prefered the actor that played him at the Paramount in Seattle.
Much agreed. There are so many other women who are more talented than Sarah Brightman. There's no depth to her voice. I've always liked Michael Crawford however. Sarah Brightman=overrated.
WTF???? COULDN'T THEY PUT A YOUNGER CHRISTINE??? THAT BITCH IS LIKE 40 YEARS OLD, AND THE PHANTOM HE LOOKS LIKE MY GRANDPA!!! THE MOVIE IS WAY BETTER...I wish they'd changed the actors
well you have a good point about christine, but dude, first of all the phantom is supposed to be an older man, and there is no way in hell that the movie is better. Gerard Butler cant sing for shit, if you were a true phantom fan you would never compare the movie with the show.
no... it's famous because of Andrew Lloyd Webber captivating music, and it's high production value. not just the actor, actually, it would have been as good with other actor I bet.
He may of written it, but with out Michael Crawford it would of flopped, because Steve Harley who was supposed to play the phantom sounded like shit singing this music.
Looks-wise Sarah Brightman was a bit old for the role, but her voice was perfect. It had that imperfect edge that made the character more vulnerable, perfect against Michael Crawford's soaring voice. That's why Brightman didn't have a problem singing pop/rock either.
yea...sarah's voice just seemed too mature for the role...i mean, she's only supposed to be 17...and there's a stuffiness in it. don't get me wrong, i like her voice, she's just not my favorite Christine...
Yes! I agree! Finally someone that agrees with me! Her voice does sound a bit too matured. I liked Emmy Rosum's voice better for the role because she is younger and has a younger voice.
