  • Thanks for posting . The percussion in the back round is SERIOUS, WOW.

  • Brilliant, under-rated musician!

  • Reading her bio now!

  • I had never heard of Mary Lou Williams until I heard about her on the local jazz station today. I've taken multicultural courses and cannot believe her work was never mentioned! Thank you for sharing.

  • Hi Folks, Gotta love Mary Lou. The Jazztime album is posted under Mary Lou Williams C Jam Blues, the Duke Ellington tune. Jay

  • I know someone currently making a documentary about Mary Lou Williams. She is getting known musicians and celebs to be in it. Might be interested in others who knew her, etc. I saw the beginnings of the documentary and it is beautiful.. can't wait for it to be completed.

  • oh that would be cool as hell.

  • You probably already know this, but you might want to get in touch with Brian Torff at Fairfield University. He has tons of stories about Mary Lou Williams which he just self-published in his memoir In Love With Voices.

  • There is a documentary currently being produced about the life of Mary Lou Williams. I've seen the beginnings of it and it is beautiful. It will be such a wonderful story. They are looking for known jazz musicans and celeb types to comment and possibly be in the documentary. Probably interested in people who knew her too. I know the contact, if interested

  • I worked with Mary Lou on a PBS special on Alvin Ailey. She told me the musicians during the Modern Jazz revolution always stopped up to her house. She said they always wanted to learn the MOST DIFFICULT STUFF.

  • Can anyone post Mary's album Jazztime USA ? two terrfic tunes on it... I have LP but no camera.Terry Gibbs on other side. The Tenor and guitar on Downbeat are amazing

  • I loved jazz since I was 10, why nobody tell me about this beautiful woman. I am pissed.

  • from all acoounts, she was a very spirtual human being besides being immensely talented

  • @coloredopinions She doesn't get the recognition she deserves outside of serious jazz circles, but then few great jazz artists do.

  • @deepkeel65 yeah, and if she came out today she'd barely get any at all. Then record labels ask why is music suffering. (smh)

  • This is gold!!!

  • You cannot COMPARE Coltrane to Ms. Williams. That is like trying to compare a chicken to an egg. Ms. Williams birthed Dizzy, Monk, Coltrane and others.

  • oh noooo. I said in "terms of injecting spirituality", she was second only to coltrane. but only on those terms.

  • WOW. how have i been INTO jazz for so many years and never heard of this woman??? this is beautiful music. Love the coltrane comparison, there's passion here. Any other suggestions? THanks for the post!

  • Me neither,I read about her in a book 'bout Monk. She tutored him, Dizzy and Bird, I read.

  • MaryLou was amazing. Started playing professionally around 15 yrs old and when she was about 18 was playing, and arranging for Count Basie. Duke University dedicated a building with her name and her papers and memorabilia are housed there. MLW could play blues, boogie, stride, straight ahead jazz--you name it, in addition wrote some classical jazz compositions and religious pieces that were performed in the Catholic diocese.

  • She was THE best... anyone got Boogie Mysterioso?

  • i just found her! this is amazing

  • Mary Lou -- Morning Glory! RIP!

  • ...mary lou....like no one else ever could....or ever will again....this is p r i c e l e s s !...yes indeed...

  • Thanks for sharing and introducing me to this artist..brilliant! xx
