One of BR's many 'blooper' classes of diesels, but nice to see a living reminder. that many steam locomotives were better than the diesels that replaced them! This one is almost pretty.
2 locos were fitted with Rolls Royce DV8N engines in a vain attempt to solve the chronic reliability problems with the original Paxman units, unfortunatly it was too little too late, however one of the DV8 engines lives on in the heart of Class 14 D9524 (14901) as part of the Andrew Briddon collection at the Elsecar railway
Yeah it's a shame though as these look like great trip working locos with great driver visibility and with two engines something to limp home with if one shuts down.
Remember these way back in the late 60's i saw nearly all of them, alas no photos,i think my brother had a couple. Most were based in scotland at Polmadie and Haymarket,if i remember did some have rolls royce engines?, and i think some were based at grangemouth
Actually you are both right :) the majority of the class were fitted with Paxman Engines but as they gave some much trouble when in service Claytons fitted their last two locos (D8586-87) with Rolls Royce V8 engines in a bid to improve reliability, however the class had been written off in the National Traction Plan so the rest of the fleet were not re-engined and carried on till withdrawl
Yes it is :) all the early Clayton Built locos had GEC electical gear, the later batch that were built by Bayer Peacock were fitted with Crompton Parkinson gear and were said to be superiour to the Clayton originals, shame that one of the BP built locos never surived :(
@tpvalley I spoke to one of the guys working on this loco and he said the fuel pump (I think) wasn't up to the job. It was susceptible to blockages, which caused fuel starvation and then leaks, which then led to engine room fires. He said they substituted a component from a class 37 and that this works fine. Hopefully this will keep the Clayton reliable.
Hello My Name is Gareth and I am actually A member of the Chinnor And Princes Risborough Railway (CPRRA) and this Clayton is actually preserved on that railway. To see the website of the CPRRA please go to google or any other search engine and type in Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway. Thanks.
Scheduled to re-enter service on the Chinnor and Princes Risborough Railway end of April :)

I've been in a clayton cab when I was younger at the Chinnor and Princes Risbrough Railway. It was very spacious
klambert94 2 years ago
It would be this actual same Clayton as there is only the one still existing :-)

From the front the claytons remind me of the house in Amityville horror! Wicked sounding engines!

Nice try at guessing the engine types but they were actually Paxman Six Cylinder 6ZHXL with traction motors and main generators by GEC

I have the old combined volumes of 1966 -67-68and it states that those two actually had the Rolls engines fitted. I knew i seen it somewhere.

This has the same looking control handle etc as the class 25 and some other stuff.
is the control equipment gec?

I believe a big problem lay with the fuel system?

was it running on one engine?
Does it have a fuel system fault now?
I believe that was a problem when on BR.
tpvalley 4 years ago
Ah nice, back when it sounded good! I wish the DTG would get it running properly again. :o(
