I can't find any tutorials on how to change pickups on a guitar without a pickguard. I have an Ibanez GRG170DX (it's HSH and no pickguard) and I wanted to put Seymour Duncans or EMGs on it (I think I like the sound of Duncans better)
@mmim4 because it will kill the batteries i believe..
its just im not a big fan of active pickups.. what happens when the batteries go live? in a middle of a song?
if you want insane sustain, change your nut to that ball-bearing nut thing.. i have longer sustain on a strat than on a stock LES PAUL with that thing..
@richogem a longer scale gives better sustain, also if all the 6 screws on the trem is flush and equally tightened, you get a heck load more resonance, so much so, that I have to put a muter under the springs in the spring cavity to get rid of the "wang" reverb off the springs. Active pick-ups, electric guitar don't need active pick-ups, bass does. If you feel you need active pick-ups, maybe its the amp. But they can last 6 months to a year if you plug the jack out when not playing.
@klassklown44 replacing humbuckers would be different from what he shows here. Actually, this is pretty much a guide specifically for a strat or strat-style guitar with single coil pickups. Just google search "replace Les Paul pickups diagram" (I'm assuming you have a Les Paul, but if not, obviously just change the name of the guitar) and you'll find thousands of websites that will give you step-by-step instructions
Yes, but your local guitar shop more than likely has pickguards built for different size pickups. I know that Fender specifically sells different pickguards for various pickup variations, such as HSS, HH, pretty much anything you can think off.
@SimplyChr15 i think you need to buy a new pickguard. or you have to buy some decent pickup which have the power of a humbucker. i guess Seymour Ducan has something like that.
can some one give me osme help? I am I am not replacing my pickups I just wanted t pratice removing and reattaching the picguard if I do, and I found a couple springs in the guitar under the pickups and I can't get the pickups back in they get way too high or the screws get too lose can somebody help?
yeah but it cleans up your signal a lot, puts more bass in it, and makes it sound really washy ... it's not good ... but seymour duncan makes a humbucker that fits in a single coil slot. it's called a Seymour Duncan SHR-1 ... it gives you a fat, heavy tone that humbucer give you ... im getting one for my bridge pickup in my strat ... check it out.
hey, umm any help guys? i recently bought a new pickguard and pickups to fit it, and two screws in the pickups dont go in, they just push the pickup out more, how come, and i tried holding it still forcing it in but just doesnt wanna go in, why though?
That's pretty much what the screws do, I believe. You adjust them to height that way. Try screwing them in first, without the guard to get that thread opened up (man that sounds nasty). Good luck. Oh by the way it's great seeing a master at work, the SSL1's are great. I know it's subjective but they're almost as good as some Fralins & Fender Fat 50s I've tried for a little less.
Thanks! great tutorial. Looking to get a cheap Aria and replace the pickups with some seymour duncans

manelcebas 1 year ago
@SimplyChr15 you can just saw a bigger hole.
Rebound443 1 year ago
@SimplyChr15 You don't have to but it'd probably be the easier option. You could of course just cut your existing pick guard to fit a humbucker.
SGTCloudrunner 6 months ago
@SimplyChr15 yes but u can cut a hole with a dremel to fit it in.
