blue or green eggs aren't that special, all that's different is the color of the shell. "I've never seen anything like it." Coming from the news? I would think they would have done some research. Araucana and Ameraucanas lay those eggs since they are bred to. Easter Eggers, which are mutts bred with Araucanas or Ameraucanas are even more common, there's a few hundred for sale at 2.50 a hen at my feed store. Easter Eggers lay colored eggs to.

lol "never seen anything like it" was that on the news?.....some rare chicken breeds, such as the Araucana and Ameraucana, lay blue and blue-green eggs, like some of you have stated, you think the news would know that
@Brandon85923 The news doesn't seem to do much research anymore. The blue egg laying gene is dominant. I plan on getting chickens soon, I want to get some Ameraucanas just for their egg color alone.
When I was a kid we had chickens that laid blue eggs. Nobody believed us, they said we gave the chicken color dye or we dye the eggs afterwards. Believe it or Not.
@iluvkawaiimakeup The egg shell color doesn't affect the taste of the egg. One lady at the farmers market has a mix of colors in each cartoon, white, light brown, chocolate and adds one green egg for color. It's very cute.
all this is soo funny the lady and her reaction and all the stupid comments that people have left, the eggs are green because the chicken has to be a ameraucana chicken they are known to lay light green eggs or light blue ones. EDUCATE YOUR SELF PEOPLE!
There are two breeds of chickens that lay Blue/Green eggs. They are the Araucana and the Crested Cream Legbar, which includes Araucana in its genetic makeup getting the egg colour and the crest from that gene pool. Ameraucana seems to be used in the USA but this is not the correct name for the South American Araucana. It appears that the Spanish took the birds back to Europe and on the ships of the Spanish Armada because the Shetland bantam from the Shetland Islands also lays a blue egg,
when I was a little gal, I went to england and found out that crows laid bright blue eggs! its amazing how pretty they were. I do wonder though, why on earth the birds would lay such odd coloured eggs.

lilblueguy 1 year ago
@lilblueguy Your right. In order to get green eggs you need to cross breed a easter chicken also known as Araucanas. with any brown laying chicken.

They just need to come out of the chicken covered in pink and yellow stripes so we don't have to worry about painting easier eggs anymore.

Araucana's chickens, originally from the south of Chile due the region of Arauco, lay colored eggs.

It's not only 2 breeds of chickens that lay blue/green eggs.
We have the silver dorking. Then araucana, and the ameraucana, and cream legbar and the swedish breed Isbar.
= 4 breeds. And dont forget all the mixed breeds with the gene of green/blue eggs. ;D
But, araucana is the first bluelayer. All other blue and greenlayer breeds have been developed by using the araucana.
