Ok, for people who don't understand what is up with her, this is what. She hates everyone because she feels that nobody likes her (I would hate someone if they hated me... mostly), cares for her well being or wants to be with her. Because of this, she doesn't want to have to depend on others to live. But this is very difficult for her, almost too difficult. So, what she is asking for is someone who will be there to hold her hand when she needs it, but she isn't getting it. This makes her angry.

Every time I see Asuka confronting her own pain, I remember the time my own mother almost died of pneumonia. I remember her lying in the hospital bed, while I was unable to come to her aid or do anything, and it hurts so bad and I feel so much sympathy for this poor girl it's almost like she's my real sister.

How can Asuka be Anno's favorite character, when he's constantly making her situations the absolute worst. That horrific fight with the 9 reproduction's speaks for itself. Even in Rebuild where the dreadfully depressing tone is not so prominent she is screwed over... again.

@Haseo190 The hero who is put through many trials will often be the character the audience most identifies with. Asuka is a close mirror of Anno's own personal depression, outside of Shinji himself. So it's no wonder he spent so much time developing her extremely complex personality and putting her through so much.

I guess im a hater, cause i do not like English dubs at all. ESPECIALLY in Evangelion, all the characters sound absolutely terrible. If you haven't watched it subbed yet, i would recommend it to anyone who has only watched dubbed. Its a lot better, and the english translation for the voice actors is sometimes wrong in comparison to the subbed version. Of course these might just be my opinions, but i've seen people give Evangelion a much better review after watching it subbed.

Unlike many haters, I like English dubs. But damn Asuka's father and step mother sound plain awful and flat.

And I'm pretty sure in Japanese voice acting foreign accents are almost never used (I've only seen one case in which the character was American with a pretty well done accent).

@TheAmyettes If you do then you feel the pain of Hideki Anno (creator of Evangelion). One of the reasons it was so well made was probably because he understood pain etc. After all he did have problems about depression and whatnot.

Actually, that woman is Asuka's stepmother. Asuka's real mom's soul was sucked out of her in an accident with Unit 02, and she went nuts as a result. Itty-Asuka's solemness scared the crap out of her stepmum. :S Still, you're right, that stepmum's a bit too paranoid about a tiny kid.

Asuka's mother originally did love Asuka. But when Asuka was four years old, she participated in an experiment with Unit 02 (similar to the experiment performed by Yui Ikari with Unit 01). Though she physically survived the test, Kyoko emerged mentally unstable, and believed a doll she cared for to be an infant Asuka and even went so far as to attempt to strangle Asuka. Her mother was later institutionalized and then commits suicide by hanging herself.

@Sakurako1234 That is a very good summary of why Asuka is the way she is; everyone else tries to explain the issues you see while Asuka is interacting with others, but it really all boils down to her mother, just like the rest of the Eva Units. @Melleina, chill. That woman is not her mother, she is her step-mother. She finds it hard to love Asuka because she's independant, acts somewhat cold to her and doesn't rely on her, which is a reasonable expectation. She finds Asuka's behavior a bit unnerving.

Asuka's biological mother went insane because a part of her soul in contained in Unit 02. She believed that Asuka's doll was Asuka herself, and that Asuka was a random child she didn't know.
