Congrats Brent on getting off the shit. Enjoy that baby boy of yours. I had my little girls and they changed my life. I use to be someone totally different than i am now. If my girls only knew. ; ) I love shinedown and keep doing what your doing...I will be listening. ......also fuck everyone who talks shit about him gaining wait.....walk in his shoes....Life is short...dont live it being a dick.
@Thejonnycore wow guess who needs to stfu, hes not fucking 500 lbs, he's healthy and not a fucking twig like half the horrible bands that are being played on the radio these days, what do we need to only allow people w/ their bones sticking out to entertain people so they continue to paint the image that to be sexy and attractive you have to be thin. I'm willing to bet you're fatter than he is lmao
For all you people who say he can't hit the notes, have you ever stopped to think that Shinedown has been touring pretty much non stop since before the "sound of madness" came out. I have been following them since the beginning (LAW) and have seen them countless times and Brent has one of the most powerful voices around in rock music. Who cares about technique I would rather see someone with passion for their music and who will give an honest performance and actually care about the music!!!
They wrote the song, they can play it however the hell they want. This isn't American Idol; it's theirs, they own it, they created it, they aren't just singing something someone else did all the work creating.
Actually, this is a kickass performance. Brent might be off an octave or two here and there from the release, but they're acoustic. Most good acoustic sets are played ALOT different then the studio cuts.
saw them live at ROCK AM RING and brent rather screamed than sang but he hit all the high notes and it was fucking fantastic. he was so emotional and made the fans FEEL the music.
and THAT to me is the most important thing about this kind of music.
how in the hell do you know he lip-synched during the fucking chorus if it was live. most people nowadays sound like shit during the concert cause they rely on fucking computers. maybe this is just how he's feeling that day, it's all about feeling and emotion, go and listen to what dimebag darrell says about putting your music into a computer and all that shit
sgwinn1 you have it exactly right. He is totally out of his range on this song, second chance etc...He has an awesome voice when he stays in his range... If you can't cut it live don't record it!!!!!
Any true professional vocalist should not try something in the studio that he/she cannot duplicate live. If you listen to any of the live videos online, Brent sings flat and doesn't hit any of the high notes. I'm not saying he doesn't have a good voice, but he sometimes swings for the fences a little too much in terms of studio production, and can't quite pull it off live.
yeah, ive never heard anyone who sang exactly like a their studio version live.. i just saw billy currington at dxie dance hall in beaumont tx, and no im not a fan of him, just the ole lady wanted me to go with her lol, but he sang prolly the closest to the studio version as ive ever heard anyone sing live.. i was impressed but it wasnt perfect like studio.. but props these guys, id rather hear an acoustic performance more than anything.. just brings out that natural, human voice better..
Fair point. I hope to be out there one day. Being a single father, i'm concerned about pursuing music because the lack of time with my son could have a negative impact on him. I'm pretty much all he has. I also have a psychology degree and work in the field , so altho i don't have a rockstar salary, i live comfortably.
Far from the obvious truth. Saw them in New Mexico with Staind and Chevelle and he had no problems hitting the notes. There are a couple flat performances of songs like "Call Me" but he nails it the majority of the time.
Brent has a strong voice......in the studio. I dug these guys from the first time i heard them so ive bought tickets many time to see them and i must say Brent goes flat an aweful lot. He writes these vocal melodies that are just impossible for him to sing night after night on the road. this is a good example. he isnt singin two part harmony, he just cant hit the songs note for note like like the record. Stupid people are gonna argue with me but it's the obvious truth. Sorry! im still a fan tho.
@chilldaddy81 I disagree. he changes it up everytime he sings. I've watched hundreds of shinedown clips in addition to 8 concerts. I think he can hit any note he wants anytime he wants. he just chooses not to.
Well, u can think what u like, but Brent just isn't as good of a singer as you think he is. I hate it cause i like shinedown alot. I've seen great live vocalists(steve perry, steven tyler, layne) and Brent simple pales in comparison. Why is that so hard to accept. Argue if ur tone deaf!
he WAS a great singer - safe to say one of the greatest rock voices ever - his music wasn't that popular but he was the only one who did justice to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Simple Man.
Its also visible nowdays he is nowhere near as good as few years ago - he got fat - harder to catch breath = harder to sing the money notes with his huge voice.
I hope he gets his old form back or Shinedown may be over.
You've lost your mind! The simple man cover had numerous pitch problems and the runs were mediocre at best (if you can't hear them, call an ENT immediately). I am being critical cause i'm sick of people kissin his ass when it should be kicked. Everybody jumped on the shinedown bandwagon long after he lost his intensity. I do think he WAS a great performer, even with the pitch problems, but people have to put their ears on and accept the facts.
you don't know shit about shinedown and brent and you are clearly not a fan but just a troll - because who else would bother to convince fans that their favourite band's lead singer sucks :)
That's what im talkin bout. I am simple pointing out that he goes flat alot live. If he didn't go flat ALOT(not ALWAYS for all u illiterate dumbasses) I would not have made the comments. Simple as that. BTW, I do follow shinedown and like them, that's why I am so disgusted with his live singing. I have degrees from Ole Miss and Delta State in vocal performance and education. I worked hard to learn theory and train me ear. Thats why i get frustrated with Brent and everybody who is on nuts.
dude i dont think he has to be PERFECT at singing, im not saying hes not, and im not saying he is.. but he writes damn good lyrics and he has a voice that many people can atleast enjoy, and i think he has a great voice, but i dont think you have to have a perfect voice or such, to sing great music.. his lyrics are what make the songs great and his unique techniques and most importantly hes playin from his heart.. and i believe hes one of the greatest out there, and im not a rock fan either..
So you have 2 degrees in vocal performance and a degree in psychology? Doubtful. Brent doesn't have trouble with control, and he's not falling flat on a lot of notes. It basically comes down to this, he has a phenomenal recording voice, but his range isn't as great live as it is in the studio. After a few shows, he has to change the arrangement of the vocals because he can't hit those higher notes. He still however has one hell of a voice.
Doubtful? Bachelor's and master 's in music theory with emphasis in vocal performance and a master's in psychology with emphasis in research and development. I understand that you like brent alot. That doesn't in any way change the FACT that he goes flat alot live. If you have somehow convinced yourself that he sounds ok and that he doesn't have some serious pitch control issues, u are simply delusional. Good try tho buddy. I hope as a musician you will work on your ear alittle so u won't fail.
You don't get it do you? He's not singing pop music, his vocal technique doesn't have to be perfect. Music is about emotion, and whether he has the best voice or not, if he can portray emotion to fans that he sings to, which he obviously does, then technique is obsolete. I don't give a shit about his technical aspect, because as far as I'm concerned (and this is coming from a fellow musician/songwriter) his vocals are absolutely astonishing. If you don't like it, then dont listen.

so what ur saying is it doesn't matter if a person sings off key. FAIL!!! That's what is meant by technical: singing the right notes. He does have a nice tone to his voice. that doesn't make up for singing off key. Try again.
I never said it doesn't matter if a person sings off key, I was referring to control. You try singing the kinds of songs he does night after night and you'll find that you lose some range in your voice with would ultimately cause you to sing off key at some points. I've seen plenty of videos where brent sings with 100 percent perfect pitch. and he CAN hit all the notes he does in the studio. Changing the arrangement of his songs doesn't mean his control is shot, it just means that he's
singing it in a different fashion. Trust me my friend, if he was a shitty singer, shinedown wouldn't have 3 multi platinum records. Not only that, A recording studio can't MAKE you sing on key. Is you're a shitty singer, it will show, even when you're recording a record. I know, because I'm in the studio a lot. Every note he hits in the studio, he can hit live. So though he may, at some points be off key, that to me doesn't make him any less the great singer he is.
I have friends that aren't rockers, took them to see shinedown, when they were done they were amazed. They asked me to burn them copies of all CD's and couldn't wait to see them Live again.
@nick42701 Their passion is great, but there are alot of passionate, crappy singers. He IS A GOOD VOCALIST but singing flat IS the norm for him. The times I've seen live where he hit the choruses were lip-synched during that portion. He sang most of it live, but then relied on recorded vocals on the choruses. (Sorry die-hards, but it's a fact. ) He has a good voice and tone, but part of the game is performing live and it will only get harder as he gets older. Only do what you can duplicate.
@wmhoneybucket Also they were probably touring....you dont get a lot of vocal while touring. So without that doing the chorus, he could really fuck up his vocals for the rest of his life.
@nick42701 Well put. His wide range is downright amazing. I am a baritone singer, I can hit some higher mid notes, but trying to sing this song, and his falsetto.. ouch.
Please, Shinedown is far from over. I've been there from the beginning and even though they are a bit more commercial now they are still great and will continue.
I don't think comparing him steve perry or tyler is apples to apples. Yes those guys can hit notes and are great live singers but they can't do what Brent does. I guess me and the other 99.99% of the people that post positive comments are all wrong. you are the only one thats right. It seems we will just have to agree to disagree.
what im saying is if you listen to him live, technically he is a mess. He does have a good tone to his voice, he just lacks control. It baffles me that people will argue with technical observations. 99.99% of people can't carry a tune and obviously can't distinguish one either. Those other singers are technical and tonal geniuses. PERIOD. So he doesn't compare.
He gained a little weight because hes fucking human, look at his life style.
Im sure he doesnt have time to hit the gym and being on the road, healthy food and "fast food" arent within the same catagory. Also, because of his build and frame, he could probably look exactly as before, within 3 weeks and if decides to relax a little too much, itll happen again.
I'd like to add that "pvalle303", your comment is ridiculous. Why would a singer's appearance EVER matter? This isn't pop music. This isn't hip hop music. This is ROCK music, and it's about MUCH more than appearances. It has NOTHING to do with appearances. If you liked Shinedown because you thought "0MgZ BrEnT WuZ s0oO hAwTt!1", then you'd better start listening to pop music, where the "artists" have zero talent, but "0MgZ thEyRe S0o kEwTt!11111" :)
First of all, Brent Smith was not a COCAINE addict. He was addicted to prescription pain killers, and unless he wasn't eating while he was on them, that's not the cause of his weight gain. But who f*cking cares about his weight?! He's an incredible vocalist, and Shinedown is an incredible band.
actually I just saw an interview Brent gave and said he was addicted to cocaine and oxycodone and he got off of it when his son was born, he didnt want him to grow up without a dad especially one he could look up to.
Yes he was addicted to oxy contin as i was. It's a very nasty drug and you do not eat hardly a thing. This is why brent has gained weight, But who fucking cares thats besides the point. Hes the best male rock vocalist of todays times
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
who knew that being off coke would make u gain wieght and also need new band members to sing along with u because ur vocal chords r no longer numb as shitt and ur starting 2 feel it????????? LMFAO still a great song/band/singer but damn the coke made the difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
dude obviously if coke makes u lose weight ur gonna gain weight after u quit weather he wuz on drugs or not he made hiz mark in the music business and when hez gone every1 will remeber him 4 hiz work
no they got new band members becuase of the band members who left and got kicked out and as you can see the sound of madness made it 20 times farther than any other record that shinedown put out. and honestly drugs arent making him "Sing Worse" They are singing a 2 Part Harmony. it still sounds awesome
IM SAYING DRUGS made him sound better.....not when hes off of drugs....when hes clean it just doesnt seem now that he can carry it like he used to....
Come on, guys (especially pvalle303)! Why do you think it's so bad that Brent gained weight? I personally think he still looks damn good, if not even really hot; and he's still an amazing singer! (In my opinion one of the most amazing singers in the world!)
And don't forget that he was addicted to drugs. I'm not really experienced when it comes to that, but who knows, maybe you gain weight when you stop taking cocaine and all the other shit, just because you eat more then.
Becky is my very very special someone, she loves these guys and now I cover this song. I left that comment hoping she might see it. Saw your page - great stuff.GBU.
I think Brent is one of the best front men that we've seen in a while, and his voice is amazing. You can tell that he really feels what he's singing. And you can't deny how grateful he and the band are for having made it. I guess i just wish he looked healthier, that's all.
Before I say what I want to say, let me just say that I love Shinedown and I'm so happy they are getting the airplay they deserve. That being said, I can't deny that it upset me how much weight Brent has gained. I feel bad being so vain, but he packed on a good 40 pounds. Does anybody else feel the same way?
What does weight have to do with anything? It didn't take away from his singing, or his extremely good looks. Yeah, I mean, I wish he was skinnier, but I'll accept him as he is.. o.O
A singer should not be judged by the way he looks but how good he is, a singer cast out pieces of his heart for people. The more pain that singer has gone through the better the song unfortunately. Which would you rather have a super model with a bad voice or guys like him?
I usually prefer their louder songs (Sound of Madness, Heroes, Devour) but this song...Wow. I'm glad they decided to make a song like this, and I'm happy for Brent and his fiancee!
Love this song! Brent and the boys are amazing live, I've seen them twice already this year! :D
if that's the case... you should give Left Out a listen, if you haven't already. any song of shinedown's is insanely good.. too good for words to explain. i dont think they are capable of writing a bad song.. :-)
brent is by far one of the best vocalist that ever lived !... period.

(Sorry die-hards, but it's a fact. ) He has a good voice and tone, but part of the game is performing live and it will only get harder as he gets older. Only do what you can duplicate.
wmhoneybucket 1 year ago
@wmhoneybucket Also they were probably touring....you dont get a lot of vocal while touring. So without that doing the chorus, he could really fuck up his vocals for the rest of his life.

Agree with you dude!
I think his technique is perfect for this band. His voice is soo strong his emotions come out in every word. He is a legend in my books.
samuraiguy27 1 year ago
@nick42701 Well put. His wide range is downright amazing. I am a baritone singer, I can hit some higher mid notes, but trying to sing this song, and his falsetto.. ouch.
XxDeadsunxX 1 year ago
@nick42701 I agree and disagree,
Listen to call me, I believe the singer now has one of the best voices out there for the genre.

Please, Shinedown is far from over. I've been there from the beginning and even though they are a bit more commercial now they are still great and will continue.
ILuvItLive 2 years ago
I don't think comparing him steve perry or tyler is apples to apples. Yes those guys can hit notes and are great live singers but they can't do what Brent does. I guess me and the other 99.99% of the people that post positive comments are all wrong. you are the only one thats right. It seems we will just have to agree to disagree.
peace
ILuvItLive 2 years ago
what im saying is if you listen to him live, technically he is a mess.

He's an incredible vocalist, and Shinedown is an incredible band.
aeroviper 2 years ago 6
actually I just saw an interview Brent gave and said he was addicted to cocaine and oxycodone and he got off of it when his son was born, he didnt want him to grow up without a dad especially one he could look up to.
LadyAndro 2 years ago
Yes he was addicted to oxy contin as i was. It's a very nasty drug and you do not eat hardly a thing. This is why brent has gained weight, But who fucking cares thats besides the point. Hes the best male rock vocalist of todays times
xxbpattxx 2 years ago
I love brent but I think Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge) is leagues above any of the competition.
but i know opinions are like assholes...
so i'm not saying you're wrong so don't go thumbin down and stuff

you would def get along with my pops, even though i personally feel brent is better

This comment has received too many negative votes show
who knew that being off coke would make u gain wieght and also need new band members to sing along with u because ur vocal chords r no longer numb as shitt and ur starting 2 feel it????????? LMFAO still a great song/band/singer but damn the coke made the difference!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thc024 2 years ago
He doesn't need the band members to sing along with him because of drugs, it's called a harmony you idiot.
DCmar00 2 years ago 4
dude obviously if coke makes u lose weight ur gonna gain weight after u quit weather he wuz on drugs or not he made hiz mark in the music business and when hez gone every1 will remeber him 4 hiz work
coldazice26 2 years ago
he was on drugs he stopped doing oxycotton the day his son was born and hasnt done any since because he realized its not about him(self) anymore.
TylerEmondMusic 2 years ago
yes he did and i respect him for that
coldazice26 2 years ago
no they got new band members becuase of the band members who left and got kicked out and as you can see the sound of madness made it 20 times farther than any other record that shinedown put out. and honestly drugs arent making him "Sing Worse" They are singing a 2 Part Harmony. it still sounds awesome
TylerEmondMusic 2 years ago
IM SAYING DRUGS made him sound better.....not when hes off of drugs....when hes clean it just doesnt seem now that he can carry it like he used to....
thc024 2 years ago
Come on, guys (especially pvalle303)! Why do you think it's so bad that Brent gained weight? I personally think he still looks damn good, if not even really hot; and he's still an amazing singer! (In my opinion one of the most amazing singers in the world!)
And don't forget that he was addicted to drugs. I'm not really experienced when it comes to that, but who knows, maybe you gain weight when you stop taking cocaine and all the other shit, just because you eat more then.

I think Brent is one of the best front men that we've seen in a while, and his voice is amazing. You can tell that he really feels what he's singing. And you can't deny how grateful he and the band are for having made it. I guess i just wish he looked healthier, that's all.
pvalle303 2 years ago 2
Before I say what I want to say, let me just say that I love Shinedown and I'm so happy they are getting the airplay they deserve. That being said, I can't deny that it upset me how much weight Brent has gained. I feel bad being so vain, but he packed on a good 40 pounds. Does anybody else feel the same way?
pvalle303 2 years ago
What does weight have to do with anything? It didn't take away from his singing, or his extremely good looks. Yeah, I mean, I wish he was skinnier, but I'll accept him as he is.. o.O
ILoveCMPunkForever 2 years ago
A singer should not be judged by the way he looks but how good he is, a singer cast out pieces of his heart for people. The more pain that singer has gone through the better the song unfortunately. Which would you rather have a super model with a bad voice or guys like him?

I usually prefer their louder songs (Sound of Madness, Heroes, Devour) but this song...Wow. I'm glad they decided to make a song like this, and I'm happy for Brent and his fiancee!
Love this song! Brent and the boys are amazing live, I've seen them twice already this year! :D
ILoveCMPunkForever 2 years ago
if that's the case... you should give Left Out a listen, if you haven't already. any song of shinedown's is insanely good.. too good for words to explain. i dont think they are capable of writing a bad song.. :-)
