Thanks for sharing. Live in Virginia, mostly trout fish, but want to start fishing for Smallies. Especially helpful that you put the location, time of year, and then showed the flies that caught fish. Very helpful!

Hi there, thank you for your kind comments. I loved fishing Virginia. It's late season now, but if you can get to Hidden Valley- you'll love it. Believe it's been low water - but there are decent pools to fish. I'm back in UK and miss the places I went to.

Thank you for your comment - in terms of what 'fly' you see - Fishing on the Rappahannock I used a 'popper' - the yellow lure - it's designed to create a surface disturbance. As a trout-person I am a novice with small mouth. However, I also used Wolly Buggers and a Goldilox. On the James and SF Shenandoah I didn't have much luck with surface lures - Wolly Buggers or weighted streamers seemed to be preferential. Regards, Patrick

Thanks for the comment - I was beginning to think I was boring people! Virginia has so many great rivers - and South Fork is definitely one of my favourites in the limited time I have been here. I'm hoping to get out this weekend. Good luck on your fishing exploits - fly fishing may not always get the biggest fish, but it opens the field to a whole range of different fish. Tight lines!
