No I suppose not, but then I like dramas like this and other similar more recent stuff like This is England. It's not always interesting, and at times can be challenging viewing ... slow burning, poignant, bitter-sweet, but it's far better than most of the other shite out there.
When I heard that Tim Roth , Phil Daniels and Gary Oldman where all in one film together I couldnt wait to see it. But then when I first saw it I was so disapointed in this film. Great actors but so boring!!
@chambersgirl92 Actually as a full time university student I don't pay tax on any work I do and currently I have no taxable income from anything else. Just means that I have to work my arse off for a job at the end of my degree so that I can pay back every penny of my student loan, probably with interest. I don't come from a well off family who can support me and I don't look down on anyone who hasn't gone the same road as I have and I'm not paying the new raised fees either as i started before,
I watched this for Film Studies as a study of the Thatcher regime but I never thought I would have such a narrow escape from living like this. Don't ever grumble about your job if you have a steady one, because you should be glad it exists at all!
I member watching this when i was still at school and Made In Britain as well....i love the music from Meantime...it always makes me think about...school, my BMX..and all the wrong things i was doing as a teenager...my teacher told me i would account for nothing in life...when i was 20 i started to send him postcards from all around the world via my old school...i have a good life..3 holidays a year
all thanks to my job.....yes i accounted for nothing in life...hehe..i proved him wrong :)
if anyone has the interest to watch the film, it's brilliant, the best mike leigh film. and i'll tell you why, check out the scene with phil daniels and his auntie, i've yet to see a better acted scene. it killl's me, i've seen many
Jeff Robert that plays Frank in this movie is brilliant. I remember this being on tv years ago and forgot how good the film and the quality of the acting really was. It's a real reminder of the thatcher years..
@rocksoliddude1 - it's almost like he's acting or something ;) lol, jk. Tim Roth's a killer actor, you just have to look at the diversity of his roles to see it. Though maybe bypass Planet of the Apes, the Hulk, etc xD
Christ, how good is Tim Roth in this! Seriously underrated actor, should've got more roles in his later career. He was awesome in The Hulk, can't wait to get Meantime from Amazon in a few days.
Unemploeyed people? Get a fuckin job, you lazy fucks!
re: Unemploeyed people? Get a fuckin job, you lazy fucks!
Get a fucking life, you stupid fuck! you are obviously some spoilt little brat who grew up in the recent boom and has no idea of what economic depression means. in 1982 there were 3 million unemployed in britain, the most since the great depression of the 1930s.there were no fucking jobs.
and for your moral education, if nothing else, it's about to happen all over again.
stick to The Hulk. Social commentary isn't for you.
Mike Leigh sometimes gives his actors destinations at a certain time/place. They might not know at which point they are being filmed. Wonder if he used that in this film?
This is simple one of the most beautiful films that i've ever seen!!! I MEAN, I WATCHED CUZ OF TIM ROTH AND GARY OLDMAN, BUT I FELT IN LOVE WITH MIKE LEIGH TOO AFTER THIS! SUPERB!
Aw, thanks so much for posting! I saw this movie when I was in my teens, and fell in love with it, good to see it again. Gary and Tim.. look how young they were here! craziness...
The summary is incorrect. Tim Roth made his screen debut two years prior in Alan Clarke's Made In Britain, where he played a violent 16 year old skinhead.

@popesnose Gary Oldman was great as everything ... Hmm except for Stoopid Spider Smith, but he was still as good as that character could possibly be.

Phil daniels has all the best lines in this film. If he wasn't in it , the film would be far too bleak.
