He can slap, he can tap better than what he shows, he just chooses not to. He's not aiming so much to show his virtuosity, he's just doing whats best for the music.

He doesn't really get overshadowed. Think about it this way. Dream Theater fans are almost all musicians. The drummers watch mike, the guitarists watch jp, keys-jordan, so the bassists all pay attention to the bass and its pretty even.
