  • This is awesome. Talk about rising again. Proud of you Ard Matthews for rising again.

  • oh.... and see you at the Digicape Yearend tomorrow night... I can't wait!

  • after a few months of the episode, I am still pointing people to this video of yours... I supported you then, I've supported Just Jinger, since I remember, and I will support you for as long as you're around... whatever you do... do not ever remove this video. I will point all the critics here!

  • Well done bud! Its always about getting back up!!!

  • hahaha shame manh..i feel for you

  • the afrikaans part sounds great for once, is awesome :D

  • that was actually good shame

  • too late now ard... lol

  • Peace bro, probably one of the best renditions of the anthem I have seen in a long time... Why are you South African's so hard on each other?

  • Peace bro, probably one of the best renditions of the anthem I have seen in a long time... Why are you South African's so hard on each other?

  • dude, the anthem incident was unfortunate. Big moment and nerves got the best of you ... can happen to everyone.

Most people will forgive you about the singing .... however that manky hat is another story.

  • Saw you at Grand Arena Grand West last night. You were awesome.

  • T all the fools that hate Ard because of the 23/8/2011 thing.

He made a mistake! Everyone makes mistakes! He apologised! Get over it!

  • @Titchify he made more than 1 mistake :P

  • Ard is such a doos.....

  • Check out @DeeplyFried 's channel... something for you there

  • I come here to listen your voice whenever I feel low... :)

  • Too bad you didn't do this the first time. No worries Ard! You're forgiven bro! Haters' gonna hate!

  • u flippin legen nice comebak:)

  • Thanks for the apology, great to see a superstar that is humble enough and has the balls to do so. You've extinguished some of my dissapointment. On behalf of everyone who are big enough to admit that they too have stumbled before - apology accepted. I really respect you for it

  • You will always be know as "That guy that fucked up the anthem". Should rather have sung "I like you madly" like 700 X because that shit is easy. No-one cares about this apology.

  • The other version was more entertaining :/

  • Does not matter how many times he will sing this song.....he still sucks.

Bet he haven't had any offers lately......and hopefully never will.

Closing the barn AFTER the horse has bolted.....does not help.

At least this has humbled him a bit.

How great thy Ard not !

  • a bit late now isn't it?

  • You are a bloody disgrace man! Why even take the mic when you know you are not perfect with the song??? And you bloody laugh after you screw up??? They should have had security to kick you out before you sang the bloody song you fool!!!

  • Too little, too late buddy!

  • I know why you would beat yourself up about what happened, and there were a lot of assholes who said a lot of stupid shit towards you, but under the circumstances, it was sung brilliantly. Anyone can make a mistake, but you handled it well and did your best. Keep up the good work man!

  • this is actually the best version of the song i've ever heard

  • this was really good... all the best mr matthews, much respect

  • Noooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!

  • Beautifully sung..it was SA's loss , nor your loss that you didn't sing it this way.

Well handled....keep making music from your heart..................moving on

  • Don't worry Ard, the national anthem doesn't resemble much anyways. Except maybe a little bit of drunk revelry mixed with hypocrisy.

  • hahahaha what a douche bag

  • Well done Ard, great rendition! Mistakes happen and the way you have humbly apologised over the past week shows that you are a good man with a good heart. Bokke!!

  • much better with out the weed yo!

  • Well done Dude! You have apologised profusely on national radio, taken responsibility? for your actions and have shown you can actually do it... What more can be asked of you. Move on and don't let it get you down...!

  • Dude I watched how you messed up before going to school!! lol but yeah dude you proved to us that any artist can forget his words while singing the nasional anthem,,,, Well done!!!

  • You sucked the first time. What you trying to do.....? ?

The whole world checked your lousy performance.... who do you think will look at this and say it;s "cool dude... we forgive you...sniff sniff..."

Too LATE ! ! No matter how hard you try and defend yourself...... Too Late !

  • You should've practised before you went and made a tit of us all.

  • douche!!!! toooooo little tooo late!!!

  • Amazing :) Gosh, this is what redemption sounds like!

  • People died for the anthem and you fucked it up .

  • Now u know it Cunt

  • Atleast you try, with all you have, I would love to hear the critics try

  • Me scuzzi

  • Well done!

Stage fright or performance anxiety can hit anyone and we all get nervous at some point. I think you handled your "faux pax" quite professionally.

  • No need to say sorry, we all couldn't stand up there and sing like u tryed. Your a good soul , rock on bude!!

  • Very nice. You're a great musician. From the little exposure I've had up on stage, I know how difficult it is to sing and play an instrument in that setting calmly and flawlessly. It really is the one time when you're bound to slip up, and of course the consequences of that always suck. I guess most people don't understand this, which is why their ignorance led to such abuse towards you. We're all human, including them - so they're actually all just hypocrites with no consideration. Well done =)

  • @cyberdems go fuck yourself

  • @pietervdw1 Thanks for proving that we shouldn't really care about your opinion anyway. Clearly you're a low-life piece of shit that nobody cares about. Perhaps that's why you're so bitter and inconsiderate and vile for no reason. Go drown in your own sorrow, you moronic worthless tool

  • shit happens dude.love your music.....keep it up bluff boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Champion!

  • I wonder how many south africans actually know all the words and better still the meaning in thier home languages. Ard, I think you have shown great remorse and honesty here, I can realate. You have touched my life with your music for years....thanks boet.

  • you the best goosebumps and tears we love you xxxx

  • Ard, you're a champion mate. Like an actor who has said his line 100 times in rehearsals and then forgets his lines on the night of a performance, so did you have one of those kind of nights. Anyone who has half a brain would understand. Keep up your beautiful work mate.

  • Art, you said you are sorry. What more do they want, and I think you got a lot of publicity out of this.

  • Beautiful. You have nothing to apologise for, shit happens bro. We still think you're awesome, good luck in the future :).

  • D00S !

  • stand proud

    stand tall

look 'round, you've done the impossible

    and here's to you!

    you've found yourself

    and it's about time

  • much better thanx man.

  • bigup dude. respect.

  • reckon he wrote the words on the back of his eyelids??

  • Too little too late dude.

  • @pietervdw1 I'd rather the world be filled with musicians making mistakes than be filled with inconsiderate, inhumane pigs like you. How about you go f* yourself, and then learn a thing or two about life and humanity. Idiot

  • the debate has inspired me to learn how to play the anthem on my guitar - which I now can now do because of your upload - Tx Ard

  • Lots of courage. You are a good oke, everyone makes a mistake.

I once played a guitar instrumental in front of a ton of people, something I had played a billion times, I got distracted in my head for a second and lost everything, I even forgot the key. Couldn't understand it. You have made such great music so this is really something I don't even think you needed to apologize for. Wish you all the best, if you ever in the states again, I would love to buy you a beer.

    Cheers,

    Quintin

  • wow you made me happy your voice is amazing.

  • We're HURTLING through space on a big round rock people... Perpective ???

  • amazing what you can do when you're not high as a kite!

  • peace...love...more tolerance... for yearsssss even

  • dude...i love you. You have the sickest voice ever, write the sickest music ever...and are just generally....main!!!! AWE ... people must let shit go!

  • This is amazing! :)

  • Ard, honestly, you were unprepared the first time and I thought it was a disgrace. But, you have taken responsibility admirably and redeemed yourself in my eyes. This rendition is heartfelt and sincere. Good on you!

  • anyone can make a mistake!

  • Redeemed. Great edition. Took it on the chin, but did not let it stop you from making a come back :)

  • He didn't know how to pronounce the words.. Even in this video he pauses to concentrate on certain words.. Words that should come very naturally.... No excuses.. He didn't choke up he cocked up

  • Bro, well done. You have responded amazingly.

  • Well done! Jy is 'n ster!

  • Ard, it saddens me on how unforgiving our country can sometimes be. One day SA looks at you as a hero considering the successes of Just Jinger and the next day you are sacrificed for missing a few words in our Anthem. Have you ever studied our national sportsmen when they sing the national anthem? I truly believe if all South Africans are examined on the exact wording, very few will pass! In my view you are and will remain a national hero and talented artist.

  • So many people support Ard here. Granted I feel sorry for the guy, what is the excuse? Nervousness? So....waxes the opening performance and thereafter nervous? No...the bottom line is, dunno the anthem coz its not my language....can't pronounce the words correctly coz it aint my language. Karma is such a bitch.

  • Your are authentic and humble we need more South Africans like that! The live performance on national radio the very next morning was the proof in the poeding already. Well done....next week there is biggen news...and then this will be forgotten.....

  • there are still mistakes, buddy. get it together!

  • If more South Africans would stand up and take a stand for what they believe in ... we would live in a bigger and better country!! People are so quick to judge, but they forget (much too quickly) that they can make (and have also made) mistakes! Good for you, Ard!! Keep on smiling and keep on singing!!

  • Ard, it's okay to be human and most people will acknowledge that. And, instead of running away (which would have been tempting with backstage so close by), you stood there and faced the music. That took character. You've gained more respect than you've lost. You will not be defined as the guy who bunged up the anthem, but as that well-loved South African icon with an incredible track record and the humility to take the tough times on the chin -- and much else besides. Now that's a rolemodel.

  • Ard, relax, you are human!

Bok-mistakes have cost us many games recently. Lost more than we won..

..."United we shall stand" : aren't these the words that the little girl in that "patriotic advertisement" forgot?

I'm sure all of the participants there have seen the relevant add many times before. Clearly, the penny hasn't dropped...

They could have assisted you Ard.

I'm actually stunned by the Bok's lack of initiative and "standing together" in unrehearsed circumstances...

  • I wonder how many times he had to do it before he got it right. Hahahahaha. Goodness

  • No worries meester. Jy wys jou staal en jou trots in hierdie vid.

  • te laat dawg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Great publicity stunt! .intentional or not...if anyone didn't know who you were... Now they do. WELL DONE!.. thumbs up and a cheesy grin for ARD.

  • NAH, preferred the other version...

    much funnier

  • BRILLIANT!!!!!! A pitty about Tuesday but you have yet again proven that you are a true 'muso' with true talent. Keeping rocking!

  • As they say Ard, mistakes happen bru. Keep doing what you do and make SA proud.

    From a fellow Bluffian.

  • Absolutely awesome voice and stunning rendition of the anthem.. got a bit teary for a second!! Great job Ard!

  • Too late - 1st rule of performing "everyone sounds good sitting alone on their bed" why don't you record yourself singing it in the shower too? Then we can see how real professionals do it!

  • big fan... well done for setting the record straight brother. respect, respect...

    i'm a huge JJ fan

  • U ceratinly got my vote. I commend you for the courage to face the storm and in acknoeleging your human error. Keep going.... Viva Ard Mathews, Vival Just Jinjer, Viva South Africa!

  • U ceratinly got my vote. I commend you for the courage to face the storm and in acknoeleging your human error. Keep going.... Viva Ard Mathews, Vival Just Jinjer, Viva South Africa!

  • that was beautiful! thanks for the vid... i'm totally gonna learn this song

  • Well done Dude! You have apologised profusely on national radio, taken responsibility for your actions and have shown you can actually do it... What more can be asked of you. Move on and don't let it get you down...!

  • WOW!!!! WOW!!!!!! You positively blew me again! i have tears in my eyes!!!!

  • Your willingness to make up for it says a lot about how remorseful you are, this rendition is better, but then again, who are we to judge, no ones perfect. The apology on 5fm was enough for me -this may be bordering on conceited- but it's appreciated non-the-less. Thank you, God bless you and God bless South Africa.

  • Dude, I love your band and all, but you should have just let it go, this is gonna make you look silly and desperate. Just laugh it off.

  • Much better dude! the mistake couldve happened to anybody.

  • @Snekkles Duche bag - Put your self in his shoes!

  • @Snekkles He did you retard! Pull your head outta your arse!

  • Well done!!

  • Respect Bru! We have all f''ed something up in our lives! We just dont all have the embarrassment of it being on National TV! Stuff what people think, take it in your stride, stop being so hard on yourself. "Nkosi sikelel' iAfrika" GO BOKKE!

  • Well done - for your honesty and your humility and the re-do. You're cool...

  • See how much better it can be with just a little bit of practice...

  • well done brother, i respect the fact that you did it again and proved that it was a honest mistake. Chin up!

  • Lekker Ard, much better

  • Hey Ard, well done - and screw all those who are still critical.

  • Comment removed

  • @richbryer you negative dude, dont need that shit

  • nice

  • Ard, please don't worry about it any longer! We know you are awesome and we love you. You are only human after all...We all make mistakes! I hope SA can let this go now...You have been through a tough time...it's enough now!!!! Peace!!!!

  • I don't want to sound like a complete ass, but really, I must know... You were really nervous and mumbled/laughed over the first half of the National Anthem, but you really cruised through the Afrikaans part. How did you, magically, overcome your nervousness?

  • @invincible49ers you clearly don't know the Afrkaans part dude.

  • shit happens, and this event will show the cruelty of men,

  • Hey Ard, I've sent this link to a few friends overseas just to brag how beautiful our Anthem really is - great job.

  • nice

  • Ard, I don't hold it against you for having a mental block on TV. Most performers will be able to recall some similar horrible incident themselves. But the point is that THIS version isn't how the National Anthem is supposed to sound, either.

  • Hey Ard, just wanna say that I really think everyone made a bit too much of this incident. Everyone makes mistakes, was a biggie, but the self-righteous hypocrites calling themselves patriots will get over themselves. Cheers, Candice

  • Well done

  • We still love you Ard!

  • Goosebumps!

  • Why didnt you do the honorable thing and tell Super Sport to play a recording instead. You would have saved your reputation and not shamed the RSA.

You clearly didn't know the lyrics or the chords well enough. Not many people buy the 'I'm so nervous' deal. Especially coming from a seasoned musician. An apology would have been more fitting than excuses. No one is impressed that you finally learnt the anthem after butchering it on national TV. I hope the Bok's win.

  • I wish you had sung it that way on Tuesday night. WOuld have been AWESOME!!! But alas....

  • Sorry it happened on tv bru. Keep up the good music.

  • who was the sms from? ;)

Glad you got that off your chest, we all know you can sing, now put it to rest :) shit happens...

  • Ag fuck it. It happens to the best.

youtube, twitter, facebook just blow shit out of proportion.

People don't comment on how amazing your actual music is! Keep up the awesome work brother

  • we all fall, we rise each time. one of s.a's best.

  • Awesome!!!! Brought a lump to my throat.

  • Respect - takes a lot to do what you've done..

  • He is really good, it is a pity he made a mistake the first time but he is only human, shit happens.

  • Watsup man, it takes a lot of courage to do this. People are being douche bags and you gotta keep going dude. Keep it real - you have a great talent.

  • Respect.

  • Saw you @ Splashy this year. Don't think I've ever felt more love for an SA Muso in a crowd before! You're amazing :)

  • respect for attempting to bounce back so soon. You fucked up on Tuesday. Cry a river, build a bridge, and get over it. Some ppl are reacting a bit over the top, maybe they should be more concerned about the murder rate in SA, or the ANC Youth League plans to nationalise the mines instead.

  • Well Done Bro! Never never allow people to define you by your mistakes...... Enkosi

  • you rock dude!!!!!!!!!!don't ever forget that!...still one of my favourite SA muso's ever!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Much better.

  • Respect! Nicely played. Lets see how forgiving South Africa can be

  • Awesome Ard! Keep on rocking!

  • I guess bad publicity is better than no publicity.

  • On television there is an add where a little black girl sings our national anthem and also forgets the words of the anthem....then all of a sudden the croud(supporters) started to sing the anthem to help her....This is how we are suppose to be united as a country, But now in Ard`s case nobody was singing along in the background...and also go and look at it and see how the whole springbok team was sitting down when Ard started to sing til the end....are they not supposed to stand for it??????

  • nice one! not sure how many of the people that are slagging you off actually know the words themselves. Will support you always bud.

  • This is damage control. It's easy to judge now of course, but the bottom line is, you didn't know the anthem. Of course now you know it. And you're obviously not a Springbok rugby supporter. Else you would here this anthem almost every weekend. Your life must sucj right now for sure. How else, portraying a proud South African, being booked for this massive occasion. No nerves here. But look at the bright side. Before this you were "that guy from Just Jinger"....now everyone knows your name.

  • @WhiteAfrican78 Wonder how many of you critics now all the words. Easy to talk smack about other peeps mistakes. And I've seen plenty of rugby players that dont now all the words either

  • Respond to this video.

  • Good Stuff Ard!!

  • Dude, the one thing you should feel, is pride, think of all the people that had a go at you! How many of them have sung the national anthem on live TV in front of the Bokke? Shit happens my man and the best way to handle it is the way in which you did. Im proud of you, i would give anything to sing infront on the national side but i cant sing haha. Good luck for the future, your band rocks bro

  • Awesome.....YOU at least took all the blame Ard, most people would have given something else the blame and would not come back out in public to apologize!!!!

  • @pietas082 Very true.

  • Sociopath

  • Great performance Ard.You are a genuine human being and you mean well .Reasonable people can see that...
