  • wow now thats very interesting but at 4:22 what in holy hell is that running in the background?

  • The last Crystal set I made could fit in my pocket

  • Lovely to see demonstrations of these old radios here on youtube.

    Thank You

  • I'm glad you liked the clip, yes I've built radios with razor blades even bits of rusty metal and pieces of rock out of the garden with traces of iron pyrite (fool's gold) in it. If you’re going to try it use a diode first to find the station then try a "cast whisker." When I had this set up and running I used the end of a small spring and some rusty looking rock with good results. Kind Regards ...Andy

  • Very nice set!

I'm glad to see it still works.

I've been building crystal sets for about 30 years.

I use parts from the 20' and 30's sometimes.

Have you ever built a foxhole radio with a razor blade like they did in WWII?

I've had good success with those.

I've never had, or built a set with a variometer. The closest that I've tried is a small coil inside a large coil. It only tuned two stations as I recall. I can normally tune 5 or 6 locals with a variable capacitor and parallel circuit.

  • Hi Rob thanks for the feedback. I've always been interested in radio. See my other viedos. In 2010 I came across a 1030's 3 valve set, it was sold in kit form nearly 80 years ago for "The Man-of-the-House to build and enjoy" Search for "Lissen skyscraper 3" after posting the video of it someone sent me 2 huge photo copies of the original circuit diagram and building instructions. and while you're at it Search for "MK128 spy radio" it's a crystal controlled transmitter.

    73's.. Andy ... gw0jxm

  • A very nice set, seems to perform well. As I type I am listening to a 1924 homebrew set with a basketweave coil and large variable condensor. At a later date (C.1928) this one had a crude single valve AF amplifier added. After some careful crystal tickling the volume achieved can be quite impressive. About six nightly stations and two daily. Robs/M6GLD

  • Hey, remember me, i asked for the Tin-can engine? I havnt heard from you in, Wohh More than a few month's, how are you doing? :)
