I have someone with me now who would dispute that this was the greatest escape of WW2. In his case around 400 got out of the camp.

I love this film of course. However, there were no Americans who took part in this escape. The escapees were British, Polish, Canadian, Australian, New Zealander, South African, French, Czech, Lithuanian, Greek, Belgian and Norwegian. Although there were Americans in the camp, they were separated from the other allied Pow's.

@SillyGrandpa It's funny (actually, sad and arrogant and typical) about us yanks that we feel the need to include ourslves, somehow, into anything for that almighty Hollywood buck.  I am thinking of the movie Possession (based on a kick-ass story by A. S. Byatt) where one of the main characters is not British, but American. Ick.
