Snape was more protective and gentler to Harry than Sirius was. Sirius continuously called Harry "James" whereas Snape's most violent demonstration were usually in Harry's best interest. Even Dumbledore didnt have the obsessive guardianship Snape did. Truly a beautiful characterization

Severus Snape's tragic love for Lily Evans makes him a sad but noble character. I remember tearing up when Snape looked into Harry's eyes before he died...Harry always had Lily's eyes...

Acctually..I think its more layered than that. I think Severus loves Harry like the son that should've been his. He loved Lily, and therefore loves Harry. It annoys him that Harry is so much like his boyhood rival, James, and he is hard on him, also because Severus is kindof a 'sleeper' for Dumbledore. Snape can help Harry in ways his obvious friends can't. Severus is one of the noblest, yet unsung characters in the story, loving Harry as much as others, but may never get the credit.

Snape didn't know it would be the Potter's son, but he did supply the info, so hence he inadvertantly was a factor that contributed to her death. Phew.

In the half-blood prince, it's true that harry finds out that snape accidentally told voldy the first-half of the prophecy but he was still voldy's servant at the time. and he didn't know how voldy would take it. and he spent the rest of his life protecting her son and hating Voldemort for killing her. If Snape knew that Voldemort would kill Lily, he would have never turned to the Dark side, and as soon as Lily died he spent the rest of his life against Voldemort, secretly. I think it hurt him even more when he remembers that he was partially responsible for her death. It must have hurt him really badly, even more so when Harry turned up.

He was a background hero that was the one who truly protected Harry, more than Sirius, or anyone of the Order, or even Dumbledore, ever did. Snape may have played an unintentional part in her death, but he was tortured for it for the rest of his life. Also, watch the Prince's Tale- in the movie. :)
