Maleficint was definitely the best villianess. She was designed with the devil in mind after all, plus her magic was amazing, and she turned into a wonderful Euorpean dragon. It was so lame how Prince Philip killed her.
@Drakeodon1 He has no dialogue in the last third of the film or so. Non-caricatured humans are among the most difficult to animate, so Phillip and Aurora's scenes were reduced to the bare minimum of what the story required.
@Drakeodon1 Actually, he speaks more than any prince before him. He speaks with his horse, with Aurora, with his father - but in this segment, he is otherwise occupied.
@pleeppleep No. In 1982 the home video format was still in it's infancy, and Disney didn't start releasing the animated features on VHS until several years after this. The classics were still re-released to theaters, but only every seven years.
Great bit of trivia - notice how the Queen's voice changes when she becomes the Witch? To get that effect, the actress playing them took out her false teeth.
I bet they even took the part where Meleficent utters that line"....now shall you deal with me young prince, and all the powers of HELL!!!" from the re-release of Sleeping Beauty. Oh!! Disney what has happened to your fine company?
I thinking about the segments from the Magic Mirror: Jafar-Aladdin Scar-The Lion King Gaston-Beauty and The Beast Kaa and Shere Khan-The Jungle Book The Wicked Queen-Snow White Maleficent-Sleeping Beauty Ursula-The Little Mermaid Cruella De Vil-101 Dalmatians Queen Of Hearts-Alice in Wonderland & Rite Of Spring-Fantasia
Maleficent was always the coolest villian. I love the scene where she zaps her little flunkies. It always makes me laugh! She's really pretty too even if she is green ;)
Yes, I love her ironic, sarcastic monologue about the dashing prince while she shows him a broken down old man. LOL Love that spiteful sense of humor.
Yeah and you know this helped me so much in school too. I remember on an english quiz we were asked what repose meant and I was able to define it because of this movie.
Well, for your information, I'm making my own version of A Disney Halloween, and I will have some parts that won't be skipped. The scene where maleficent casts her spell of a forst of thorns was fit for the begining of the Disney's Halloween Treat theme song. So, why can't they just show it in the Maleficent segment as well?
I heard that they did another with the mirror, only his face animated just like in Snow White. He mentioned all these villains and added a few more, like Ursula(Little Mermaid), Sykes(Oliver & Co), McLeach(Rescuers Down Under), Gaston(Beauty and the Beast) and saved the best for last saying that the most EVIL villain of all would have to be Jafar (Aladdin). It was only a rumor though, but I would agree about Jafar. It would be cool.
Watching this makes me appreciate the restoration that disney has done to these old classy movies(u know the platinum editions etc)...but at the same time if you restore these films too much they lose that old classy feel to them.
You've got to remember that this is the era of animation before it was labeled as just for kids (I HATE the fact that its gotten such a bad name and that people say animation is only for kids and that people don't watch because their ashamed to watch because of the lable because the more serious ones always wind up underrated) so it was ok to say some things in certain films wether they were animated or not in fact some older looneytoons cartoons have the characters stopping realizing *2bcont.*
In fact some older Looney Toons cartoons have the characters stopping realizing something and will have them turning into a donkey for a while with the word Jackass written across them.
At 7:16 same scream as wicked queen/witch's when she was killed in Snow White. Either there weren't too many ways to create good sound effects back then, Malificent's voice actor couldn't pull off a good scream, or Disney didn't have as much money and wasn't as rich as they are today so they were still working under budgets for their projects.
She was a very talented voice actress (Lady T. in Cinderella, and Madam Leota in Haunted Mansion), but perhaps you're right that a proper scream wasn't down her alley. The Disney studio was financially well thanks to Cinderella when this movie was made (although the studio LOST money from SB when it was first released), and were inventive when it came to sound.
Sorry if I come across as a know-it-all, but I just got out of a Disney history class last June (my favorite college course EVER). :)
Well ok, but it does seem a little lazy, Disney reused a lot of sound effects for their movies, short films, and cartoons, in fact the scream here was not only used in BOTH Snow White and Sleeping Beauty but also later in this same special you can hear it in the last cartoon they use here which is Donald Duck in Trick-or-Treat, makes Me wonder why if they were so invintive they had to reuse old sound effects, I'm not insulting you or Disney just saying seems kind of lazy on their part *2bcont.*
I mean I've seen a lot of Disney cartoons, movies and short films while growing up that come from that era, and they did reuse a lot of stuff, especially the sound effects, sorry no insults to you or Disney but it just seems like they were being lazy when they were so invintive with sound effects. Anyways you took a Disney History class? I didn't know such a thing existed. Is it exlusive to your college or your area? What college is it? Because I didn't think there would be a class that *2bcont.
I didn't think there would be a class that tuaght Disney history in college, I mean yeah maybe if you were taking animation because of Disney's big role in animation history but then they would just move on and you'd get to another topic in animation until they got you ready to practice animation yourself. you just don't get villains like Malificent anymore
nor movies like sleeping beauty anymore since blood and cursing is no longer allowed
i can understand why but it still takes away from the sheer excitement of the moment in a movie
