  • I'm 20 years old, and while all of my friends listen to that boom boom rap, i spend my time listening to barney's "how to swing" on vinyl. I can't believe people can't appreciate the amount of skill people like barney have. It's so sad.

  • Its Ive grown accustomed to her face- from My Fair Lady. When I heard this performance, the hair stood up on the back of my neck. Perfect rhythm, tone, time, no mistakes. Thanks for posting. This is one for the ages. I could study it for years.

  • Barney's level of musicianship was way up there, I was certainly his worst student, sorry gomen nasai sensei, yurushite!

  • geez i studied with barney in the 70's what a master

  • Starting from the Wes solo arrangement, then . . . Wow!

  • oh yea,... nice playing...

  • Truly the greatest playing I've seen on this site!

  • Pure Musical treasure ..thanks a million for posting this!

  • WOW!! Absolutely love it. I always loved Barney but this is a jem. Real special. Thanks.

  • It's an understatement to say that this performance by Mr. Kessel is completely breathtaking. Great rhythm, chord melody work, and sense of form. I particularly love the blues influence that comes in at times. After all that though, my main reaction is simply "Wow"!

  • Barney Kessel (a guitarist who plays like a paino, or a big band alike) in his best. Great GUITAR playing, not only single note solos (leave it for sax, trumpet, flute and other only melodic instruments...), but a "full" guitar. The passage between 3'59" and 4'19" just make me laugh, pure pleasure! Great video!

  • Always played that same axe. Did he build that? BTW phenomenal!

  • WOW I have heard of this man for years and never took the time to check him out until now. What was i not thinking? That was absolute state of the art jazz comping, unfrigging believable. Thanks for posting this, it is a real treat.

  • Where and when was this? He just got better with age!

  • I wonder how many SECONDS it would take...before Eric Clapton would have to ...drop out...due to being TOTALLY LOST on this?...LOL!...

  • WHOA!!

  • Greater than life!

  • Awesome!

  • Chord changes on the chalkboard.

  • I've Thrown a Custard in Her Face - Love it!

  • There you have it folks. It's guys like Barney and Joe Pass who keep guitarists like myself humble, and happy to be so. Barney is just swinging and funking up a storm. Man, this is too good. Thanks!

  • Amazing

  • i wonder how many people in this room went on to purchase a guitar after witnessing this?

  • Barney kessel era un grande ma qua suona ad un livello mondiale. La vera chitarra Jazz !!!!! Incredibile !!!!!!

  • really something else.

  • super super super

  • fucking amazing!

  • Geniale!

  • Nice he's using a Charlie Christian pickup

  • @Leedysgladstones its an origanal to its awsome

  • yeah

  • In a world where everybody else is trying to be a single note soloist, it's great to hear a guy rip double stops and three and four note chords. Barney's way of doing things is becoming a lost art and it's really sad. People need to be reminded that the guitar is a chordal rhythm section instrument first.

  • @Modes9 --- Well said! Thanks for posting this!

  • @Modes9 I will do a Barney cover soon

  • @luckluc name of the tune?

  • @filmcrew1551

"I've Grown Accustomed To Your Smile"

  • @billofjazz to your face....

  • @billofjazz actually its I ve Grown Accustomed to Your Face

  • @Modes9 everything you said is valid except the last part.

  • I bet he practiced a bit

  • now that is the way to play the guitar.

  • This must be a tune called " I ve grown accustomed to her face".

    Barney lives for ever...

  • fantastico!

  • Barney sure could swing. He is definitely missed. A true innovator on guitar. Thanks Barney. luckluc, thanks for the posting.

  • Barney is the man! He is easily in my top 3 favorite jazz guitarists of all time list if not my favorite outright. Thanks for the vid!

  • Barney Kessel is by far my favorite guitarist of all time
