What is with the comments about Mrs. Graham and the actress who plays her?! She's pretty, a good actress, and great for the part. And we're not supposed to "like" her character, not completely, at the beginning--that's how these stories go.
I hate that in most of these period dramas the main characters, especially Mrs.Graham isn't even pretty. I wish they had used a different actress to play her.
I love her character straight and to the point, what woman wouldn't react like that after having an abusive no good scoundrel of a husband who does his best to damage the innocence of your child?!
She is so conditioned from her previous experience at home with a drunkard and partying and adulterous husband that she turns totally the opposite way being a total stoic! A woman's virtue is her modesty, a man's strength of will...... Hypocrites (including the pastor who likes ales and Helen) discussing sermons and virtues among themselves!
She is even more virtuous than the pastor in this play, after having escaped her own depraved husband at home who commits adultery and parties incessantly with his friends to save her own son from being contaminated.....making the pastor who likes wine seem a total hypocrite. and ironically, the sermon given by the pastor has to do with the first miracle of Jesus Christ -- changing water to wine in a wedding banquet!
@beegirlsable she used to be married to a drunkyard, abusive and unfaithful man and fearing that he would be a bad influence for their own son, she fled from her house
Toby Stephens and James Purefoy!

They certainly feel free to give advice to someone they hardly know. How annoying. No wonder she's rude to them.

what is it with anne bronte?? there is always some creepy little boy who tortures birds! cf Agnes Grey
enpury 2 years ago 2
I think the BBC added that- I don't recall Arthur torturing any birds in the novel.

@DeathEater100 The little boy in Agnes Grey does, maybe that's where they picked the incident up from.
