  • What about squibs? Can most guns fire "safely" with another bullet in the barrel?

  • Awesome, the art of simplicity.

  • it was definetly the clip thanks for the info my freind. and please keep the videos coming us nra members need to learn as much as we can .

  • whats the idea of tapping the gun? :D

  • @Lapinmiez

To make sure the magazine is sitted correctly.

  • thanks for the tips my fourty five always jams up .

  • @threebck Could be bad Ammo or not so good Magazines.? I had the same problems with mine also &So I bought a couple of Virgil Tripps Cobra mags & No More Jams, Stove Pipes, or FTF

  • @threebck Is it a 1911? Older '11s are known to have problems here and there with double feeds and type-2 malfunctions (failure to eject spent brass) due to the small ejection port.

A good gunsmith can tune your pistol up and greatly increase its reliability if this is the case, and I recommend you do as reliability is VERY important especially for home defense!

  • i feel like its better to sweep out the brass instead of attacking the brass because that can cause an in-line stove pipe, inverted stove pipe, or even a double feed

  • how do i get out a stucked magazine frm my chinese pistol ???

  • @zoonidon Step one: Buy an American, German, or Austrian, Italian, or Croatian pistol.

  • the double feed is my biggest concern with using autos, it takes a very long time to clear. i would rather carry a backup revolver and draw it in such situation.

  • @pinoywheelgunner Heck, if you've got a revolver at all then reliability is pretty much a non-issue, there's comparatively very little that can go wrong. Why not just make the revolver your primary?

  • @aaronz101 a revolver will be my primary, actually, i'm a revolver fan. i'm talking about a hypothetical situation IF i will be carrying an auto. but i will have a snubby over a hi-cap auto any day.

  • This is my favorite video. Mr. Smith is great !!

  • Thank u so much with this video. Everytime i watch your channel there is all something to learn to... Thanks a lot again.

  • When I was in the army we were taught to do the same. However I continue to believe that when a blockage occurs or the weapon won't do as it is told then the most sensible thing to do is to take the magazine out or off first to avoid making a jam worse.

  • Sub'd.

  • Big Conference of Rhode Scholars: OoooI think oogadaba Boogadaba!!!

  • @LaRueDeeko Lol best part dude is amazing.

  • wow great vid im in the military and this taught me something. I will def use this next time i got to the shooting range. people always seem to count on sunny's days and everything going their way and don't usually practice malfunctions enough and that guy has a great way of driving that home.

  • Haha, this guy reminds me A LOT of my Master Sergeant.

  • @Z0MBIEStheyN0MBIES Read Clint's Bio a Vietnam Combat vet etc. etc. & He knows his weapons etc.

  • This video made me hungry....

  • I have a question, I've had the double feed a few times when ever I seemed to use cheap ammo anyway my question is this, each time I have ever had this happen in either my bera thunder 9mm or my Ket-Tec PF 9mm, I have a real hard time getting the mag out. I have never been able to get it to slide out on it's own and I have to pick at it a second with my nails to grab it pull it out forciblily, why?

  • I use this video as a reference when I am instructing my friend. The only complaint is that I always get hungry when Clint starts talking about salt, pepper, fries, hamburgers, eggs and bacon...and I usually have no money to buy any of that stuff!

    Damm-it!

  • Excessive waste movement on clearing a stove pipe. Just make a sweeping motion on top of the slide and that is it. You do not have to "tap it and rack it" to get it back in the fight.

  • @inzane1973ck It's not a matter wasting time. What he is teaching is a skill that when learned is automatic. For example; if 1 doesn't work you move onto 2. Simple. In a gun fight when your weapon malfunctions you don't have time for conscious thinking. Gun fights aren’t fought in seconds they are fought in fractions of a second. If you have to think horizontal (A or B or C) you have lost time that cannot be gained back.

  • @inzane1973ck also... if you noticed, the first one demonstrated actually had TWO malfunctions (the mag wasn't seated AND there was a stovepipe.) This method took care of both immediately. Having to "diagnose" 2 separate problems midway would have taken significantly longer and relied on a LOT of thinking under stress.

  • He forgot to demonstrate "failure to battery". He only showed us 3 malfunctions.. failure to feed, double feed, and stovepipe.

  • On a trip to the range we took some rokies n noone was paying attention when they loaded a pistol when i went to shoot it one round was in backwards. Scarry as hell.

  • this guy's great!!

  • @paikmendez he forgot 1 malfunction. and that is "failure to battery", he also does some excessive waste movements on clearing a stovepipe. a firm sweep on top of the slide can get the gun back to sevice.

  • @inzane1973ck Failure to battery is the same drill as failure to extract. Looks the same too, so he'd just be explaining the same thing twice. And yes you can clear a stovepipe by sweeping your hand over the top, but in combat you need to keep it simple. You don't have time to think, "oh, is this a stovepipe?" If the gun doesn't go boom you tap and rack and get back in the fight. In combat if you have to think you are going to get killed.

  • @inzane1973ck

When you are under very high stress (i.e. gun battle) you begin to lose cognitive thinking. The less you have to “think” about the better. If you follow as he demonstrates, through repetition in training, you will be faster in clearing a malfunction than trying to decide which malfunction you have then clearing it.

  • @inzane1973ck I know the method you're referring to (and I know that's what they teach in the Magpul "Art of Dynamic Handgun") the problem I have with it is in the time it takes you to look at it and decide what to do I can tap the mag and I'm half-way home because I don't have to think & decide first. So the REAL problem is you have 4 options for clearing, we have 2 (Lookup "Hick's Law") AND you can't look to evaluate it quickly in low light/dark conditions.

  • how'd he get em to stovepipe like that!>!>!?!?

  • This video is sick.

  • Great, concise, to the point.

  • you are awesome! excellent and in simple laymans terms to remember by.

    thanks!

  • Broken record

  • whats the slide on the glock finnished with

  • Comment removed

  • hell yea, keep it simply, stupid, this is perfect.

and "where was the muzzle the hole time?" between you and the threat.

  • Wish I saw this video many years ago. It would helped when shooting. I have learned the tap, rack and shoot. It quick and most of all it works.

  • Great Video

  • @thenorthshore09 thanks a ton! that makes sense!

  • mrgwyor - With all the do respect the course looks like basic pistol or maybe tac pistol 1 level. Most Sigs have no safety to actuate, the weapon (pistol) will not fire from the SA mode that it is in w/o approx 4.5lbs of trigger pull. So what is your concern? That a rock may jump in the the trigger guard and pull it? I guess my point is that you guys that are overly concerned with safety make more mistakes with firearms than most. Lastly, you say "many consider that unsafe." who are they?

  • Can someone explain, what the salt, pepper, mustard ketchup, etc thing is? Or would it make sense if I took the class?

  • @cpmower Its a way of explaining the close relationship of immediate and remedial actions.....slap,rack and pull is basic (hamburger) clearing a double feed; remove magazine and basically reload is the "advanced" (fries)

you could use salt and pepper PB&J just about anything lol

  • ran out of room in my last post. Wanted to add that I love this video, and I felt compelled to ask the question I did in my previous because of Clint's part on the double feed. Seeing as how there were two shells in the folder with the gun, I assumed it was used and was sent back to Glock to clear it due to fear on the previous owners part. Sorry, I'll shut up now.

  • @TJstrong11 @TJstrong11 The two empty cases are from the factory where they fired the gun before shipping to the dealer to prove it left the factory in firing condition.

  • @fmgpubs much appreciated

  • @fmgpubs Some state require you register the shell casing.

  • could somebody help me out here?

just bought a glock g22. they said it was brand new, but a small manila folder came with it. Inside this sealed manila folder were two .40 shell casings. This manila folder came inside the case with it, and had a Glock technicians signature on it, along with the serial code that is also on the gun. What is this? Does this mean it is new and maybe had a malfunction or something? They never told me about the manila folder at the gun shop. Thank you for your time.

  • @TJstrong11 some states require two rounds fired from every new handgun sold to go into police data bases. those two caseings you have came from those two bullets.

  • Clint, I respect the hell out of your expertise, but at 1:11, it appears you lay down the Sig with the hammer cocked and one in the chamber - which many would consider very unsafe. Am I wrong?

  • @mrgwyor

Not to beat a dead horse but If you look and listen closely, he actually drops the hammer every time he sets the Sig down. He also flips the safety on the 1911 every time he sets it down. As he places the weapons on the ground, he's taking great care to keep the muzzle facing down range. Nothing with jump in the trigger guard and pull that trigger so it's all good.

    Stay safe and have fun!

  • I like this guy! I love Mr. Smith's sense of humor, too. Especially the part about the "meeting of the Rhoades scholars" at a range during a pistol malfunction. I have seen that! haha.

  • very clear instruction..very good instructor

  • good teacher

  • Outstanding instruction.

  • I found the video very informative.I only have a few semi's,and have never had to use the way's he show's,but it sure will be in my mind if I ever need it.

I much more enjoy Revolvers for that reason.

    Thank you,

    Henry

  • I have always enjoyed this video, and after watching it again enjoy it even more. I have one question. I know that many people insist on using an over-the-slide manipulation for clearing malfunctions. I personally find a "slingshot" type of grip gives me better purchase and less chance of having my hand slip off. Is there any reason other than personal preference to use the heel of your palm and your weaker fingers to do it? The muzzle can still be kept between you and the threat either way.

  • I wish Mr Smith could answer this:

I'm having a discussion on a forum about this vid, one person says that Mr. Smith makes a huge mistake at min. 1:18-1:28, the pistol malfunction and won't fire and you are to wait 1 min before attempting anything because it could be a misfire, I replied that this is a combat drill and you use factory ammo, when this happen to you in combat, you are not going to wait. This person says that gun safety is a must and I agree.

    What's your take on this?

  • If it was a squib and the "expert" knows so much about safety then they will also know a squib when they hear it. It amazes me that everyone worries alot about safety yet their gun handling is often very poor. This approach to clearing is based on real time conflict ... so I clear it and go on. At the range in forty years I have never seen a press click wait a minute and bang. I didn't say it couldn't happen I said I never saw it happen.

    Regards, Clint

  • @fmgpubs

Are you for real Clint Smith?

  • Comment removed

  • @rustedangel666 A bullet travels down the barrel because of the expanding gas. The slide and the chamber enclose the brass, and the bullet travels the point of least resistance. Remove the gun from the equation and you have a brass case, bullet and expanding gas The brass weighs less than the bullet and the gas cant build up pressure. So what ends up happening in "most" cases, the brass pops off the bullet the gass has no significant pressure, and if something does fly, it may not penetrait.

  • @rustedangel666

A hangfire isn't an impossibility, but in my experience, if the gun didn't fire (and it wasn't a squib), that round is a dud. If you're in a fight for your life, just get the round out of the chamber, and get another one in so that you can stay in the fight. Also, and I don't know how this myth gets proliferated, a round that goes off OUTSIDE of a firearm isn't going to hurt anyone. The expanding gases need to be contained and concentrated in a barrel for bullet lethality.

  • @rustedangel666 I agree with fmgpubs, if you are in a situation where you need to use your firearm life death situation are you going to wait the one minute before clearing the malfunction? 2nd what if you wait one minute and clear the round and it goes off at 1:06 instead, you civilian guys that get into gun/tactical training are overly concerned with safety and like fmgpubs stated you all usually have poor weapons handling skills anyways but then are quick to point out every "safety" issue.

  • @rustedangel666 I generally refer to a squib as a case that didn't get any powder but the primer produces enough pressure to lodge the bullet in your barrel. If your hammer hits the primer and the bullet doesn't detonate, we call that a dud. In a normal range setting, you would set that bullet aside aimed downrange. What Mr. Smith is teaching here is combat shooting, in other words you couldn't care less about squibs or duds.

  • Clint, awesome video but you fail to address a double feed scenario when the mag can only be dropped when the slide is pulled back. That is where trained people freeze. That's also why that mag release needs to be accessible with one hand.

  • 1:21 That is generally not what you get. In most 1911 failures, the slide is out of battery and the hammer cannot drop. With all due respect, I like your video but I think you're leaving some stuff out.

  • Great video! Thanks!

  • This seems like a very reliable technique. But....what about a squib?

  • Mr. Smith, Thank you for showing these videos on youtube. I am taking my CCW class this Sunday. But i want to research and study and know that i know. Your teachings on gun use is awesome. I watch people on learning then someone talking to me. Or just show and i learn quicker. You are one awesome instructor and I would love to come to Thunder Ranch and learn from you. Thank you for your time.

  • 5/5 Thanks.

  • It's "Rhodes", people. Not old, not rogue, not mold.

  • Last year i got my first 9 MM pistol and after a few shots a bulit hang in the barrel then i try to unload it but fail. i go to local gun market in pakistan and it was close due to eid holidays. so i search the video and i find this one and after this i get my gun back normally. great video i learn a lot and now all my friends coem to me if they get a bulet jam in thie pistols.

  • Great Vid ...Thanks

Message for the Dutch guy from a Canadian. Whoever is anti gun in your government and find out who is and vote their arses out of there !

  • awesome instruction. that "old scholar" thing was halairious! hahaha

  • good vid

  • Awesome video

  • pretty new to the gun world. But I'm curious how did you manage to make these malfunction on cue?

  • Clint is most definitely the man.

  • Awesome, keep it simple! Great job

  • This is why Clint is a god amongst men.

  • LMFAO! @ 5:19! Clint is THE MAN!!

  • Clint, thanks for sharing this magnificent demonstration. Loved the part where you asked "Then I have one other subtle nuance to ask you about. Where was the muzzle the whole time?"

I guarantee, I will remember the answer.

  • "Don't over-engineer it, don't IBM it, don't MIT it ..."

Then it's best to KISS it. (Keep it simple, stupid).

  • this dude should be in the army so if the same thing happens to soldiers he could teach them

  • @vidioshowstutorials "Clint Smith, President and Director of Thunder Ranch®, is a Marine Corps veteran of two infantry and Combined Action Platoon tours in Vietnam. His experience includes seven years as a police officer during which he served as head of the Firearms Training Division as well as being a S.W.A.T. member and precision rifleman."

  • @arbormanA1 woooow

  • very simple and informative..thanks for sharing it with us mere mortal hobbyist

  • This guy is a very good teacher. Thank you very much.

  • this is the first and last video i will see on what to do when a pistol malfunctions haha. he explains it very well

  • @AskingAA I agree. This video was plain and to the point. I can now stop searching for ways to clear my handgun. Thanks a bunch!

  • @AskingAA I agree. This video was plain and to the point. I can now stop searching for ways to clear my handgun. Thanks a bunch!

  • Okay okay so I tap and the what?

  • He did NOT show you how the "home boys" do it on the street! Bang,Bang....CLICK!!! Throw it down and run like hell!!! hahahahaha

  • tap rack bang works every time, and if it don't, just reload.

  • Hahaha, I work at a public range and the "rouge scholars" thing couldn't be more true. Fantasic demonstration!

  • @callmepyro Not "rogue scholars," Rhodes Scholars; it's a scholarship trust for those seeking advanced education at Oxford University in England.

  • @silvermediastudio Thanks for the clarification.

  • @callmepyro it's Rhodes Scholars but I suppose I'm being a pedant.

  • @mikeymike4g63 Yea. I was corrected already. My mistake. I had never seen the word written before. And like I said, I work at a public range, so I'm not graced by real Rhodes Scholars XD

  • @callmepyro lolol its all good.

  • @callmepyro sorry pyro ...maybe I shouldnt correct a gun owner but it is Rhodes scholar, a prestigious scholarship to Oxford.

  • @callmepyro Actually, he said was, "Rhodes scholars," as in recpients of the Cecil Rhodes scholarship to Oxford University. I think we both appreciate the humor and sarcasm.

  • @callmepyro I admit my ignorance, but after googling rouges scholar, I can't find out what it is. Could you tell me?

  • @commonsense369 Try looking up "Rhodes scholar".

  • @commonsense369 Try looking up "Rhodes Scholar".

  • Information dense just as I like presentations.

  • My God!... No Fluff..Just great stuff.. Simple direction...Finally...Jack

  • My God!... No Fluff..Just great stuff.. Simple direction...Finally...Jack

  • great video and skills thnks man

  • i love this guys videos, but you talk fast constantly. slow up a little and teach. we all know you understand what your doing and thinking.

  • Great video!! I actually watched this last week for the first time and today!! I had a double feed on my springfield xd 9mm subcompact and I was like TAP-RACK, didnt work, removed mag, unload, load, tap, rack and BANG!! it was easy. I will be honest and say when i first saw the double feed i was like "OH CRAP" but then remembered this video!!! THANKS SO MUCH!!!

  • can you have a triple feed or is that just not possible

  • @fierwall5 You are either rather new to firearms, or you are making a joke. Just in case you are serious, I feel I should answer. No, it is not possible to have a triple feed, unless you know of some strange firearm I do not know.

  • @fierwall5 maybe if you load .22s in your .45 by accident? I don't know :)

  • @fierwall5 You can have a triple feed in the AR rifle platform

  • thanks...can always learn something...

  • I'm a lady and I plan to share this video with other ladies I know. Until today, I had no idea how to unjam my 9MM Bersa....now I know!

    Excellent training video...thanks for sharing!

  • Great video Mr. Smith! very eloquent! Cheers!

  • @gtbassguygary You just can't fire a new round if there's one loaded in the barrel.. Can you load more than one round into the barrel?

  • This all makes sense, but what about the dangers of a squib load, where a round could be lodged in the barrel. Firing a new round could cause the gun to explode. Sure in emergencies this all makes sense, but at the range shouldn't you always dissasemble and check for barrel obstructions after a misfire, as your pistol manual dictates? Thoughts anyone?

  • Comment removed

  • excellent!!

  • some boob...lol

  • Does this guy have a oxygen tank in his lungs, cos he doesn't breathe.

  • I just can't get enough of this guy!

"Well I think... Ooh I dunno.... Oogedaboogada!" just about killed me. XD

  • Great video. These drills are as important to learn as any other aspect of gun ownership. If you carry an auto for self defense, or have one for home security, you need to learn these drills. I do these drills at home with spent brass and snap caps.

  • @EyeinTeaJay Very true statement.

  • I've got a question if you have time - the weapon Failer to feed every time I fire a round down range. I go threw these exersises which is good and all, but I can't be doing this for 13 rounds or a mag full of bullets.

Magazines are good, they work in my other weapons of the same manufacture and cal. Ammo is good too, works in my other weapons by the same manufacture. Advice is appreciated.

    Semper Fi!

    Idea's if you have time.

  • @UncleBob556 Well you eliminate possible problems till you find the problem. If you know the mags are good and you know the ammo is good the only two things that could be left is the weapon and the shooter. It does not appear to be the shooter because only one weapon is down, so it must be that weapon. You may want to load a round slowly and see if anything is causing any hang ups. Could be the feed ramp, the recoil spring, or even the extractor. I would be interested to hear if you fix it.

  • great instructional video 10/10

  • Is he breathin?

  • good demonstration, a joy to watch

  • He is one of the most lovably annoying Americans Ive ever seen .... TAP .. RACK ,,, back in service....

  • I really like this guy! knows what he is talking about

  • he is making me hungry

  • well this helped me alot at the range today little .22s always jam up lol kept getting stovepipes and it became 2nd nature almost (they have dirty guns lol)

  • @crapper1 My Ruger Mark III is dirty as hell and might fail to eject once every 800 rounds, if that.. tighten your grip, put some oil on the bolt, brush out the ejector, and try different ammo.. maybe you're using old/underpowered loads.

  • the best adviced i've seen so far! BRAVO to you sir!!! clap clap clap........

  • that was very helpful!

  • I just realized this was excactly what we where tought during military training, though on a automatic carbine, but its the same. fast and easy - and it works! Very good video!

  • Nice

  • Thanx for sharing

  • AMERICA BLESSES ALL WHO RESPONDED TO MY COMMENT!!! i wish my nation was smart enough to make guns legal. id love to even have a duplicate but even THATS illigal...thank you all for the kind and suporting comments!!! i wish that 1 day tese morons would give us the rights to own guns...id be the 1st person here to get 1

  • @straps6661

Thanks man, but your channel says you live in the USA!

Did you emigrate to Japan or something?

  • @WatchRyder no i live in holland....im just pretty embarrest to live here so i filled in that im from the USA.

  • @straps6661

Dude I almost did the same with my country profile too man.

Euroland is the land of socialism and it sucks, big time.

  • @straps6661: Why don't you move to the USA, we don't need fucks like you in Europe!

  • ah God, i love this guy's no bullshit approach! and not to forget the "oggedaboggeda" XD

  • thank you!!

  • He's totally right about the "conference" One guy at the range told me he carries for self defense, he got a double feed during practice. He walked back to the bench and attempted to clear it. Is he prepared to defend himself?

    He's what I call a dreamer.

  • Don't over-engineer it, don't IBM it, Don't MIT it and don't all go for a road scholar convention :D

  • Clint Smith 4ever:-)

  • Oregon! I love this State. Hoorah!

  • I agree: we should have instructors like this on every firing range in the country.

  • I like this guy. nuff said.

  • I love his no-nonsense approach to handling FTF's and FTE's.

I would sign up for a class taught by this guy, regardless of what he was teaching. Cooking cupcakes or field-stripping a M249... I like his style.

  • @2k5325i Tactical Cup Cakes! with Duracoat frosting lol

  • im from holland i want a gun...why is it so hard to get a gun in this counrty...you americans should be feeling happy you can get 1

  • @straps6661 Holland is a wonderful country with wonderful people. Sorry to hear the public there has been educated to believe that no citizen should have firearms.

You will have to find others who agree with you and start a movement to counter the anti-gun beliefs in your country. It will take a long time but at least you have hope that people will finally see logic and reason.

  • @Dunkleosteus3691 thx for your reply, i DO think its a shame, there are lots of reasons why we should have guns! i wish i could have a duplicate but i dont have money for it!

  • @straps6661

    Are guns illegal in Holland?

  • @WatchRyder No, you can buy them in vending machines.

  • @marksiwel

No need to get arsey, I asked a reasonable question.

Oh and guns aren't banned in the UK, I own one legit. :)
