Great post!. It's interesting how Alkan's barcarolles have such a sense of darkness and desolation (specific particularly to him) compared to say, the Chopin Barcarolle's sunlit majesty/extasy.
Thanks for your comment. I agree, it is strange, especially as Chopin as a person could be just as melancholy and pessimistic as Alkan could. Perhaps the difference here is that Alkan never felt the need to pander to his audience like Chopin I'm sure felt he had to. Just an idea of course!
