  • "TD" actually MEANS wagon!

In Europe all other models are called "230 CDI T-Modell" (for example).

"CDI" is the same as "D". Both is for Diesel.

  • I own this car and is AWSOME. 400,000 miles and it still boosts and goes zoom!

Never gettin rid of this bitchin classic

  • I will never get used to a sedan/small car sounding like a truck.

  • for all mercedes wagon lovers, a small fact, about the type indication, the T stands for transporter / tourist. when it's a turbo diesel it will say so on the right on the back, so a turbo diesel is actually a TDT

  • I believe the T means its a station wagon, but on that particular one is written "turbodiesel" which tells the story if original and not added for looks. And about the with/without turbo - not only the old models are without. It was produced as 3.0 TD and 3.0D throughout the whole production period of the model, but in the States were imported almost exclusively the more powerful turbodiesels

  • Hey man NICE car i have the same one but an 1981 same color too just the intereor is tan . now i have a few question one where do i get a first aid kit? the one that was original for that year and that make? second my suspention is realy stiff and the car keeps on jumping do you have anything in mind on what i can do cause the fix is realy expensive? and third i know this is like such a stupid question but this is my first benz and i dont know how to check my tranny oil how do i do that lol?

  • @ebh972 First aid kit, check e bay. Stiff suspension, take off the air ride shocks, and replace them with KYB or Bilstein gas shocks. Tranny? Don't know, but should be a dipstick under the hood.

  • @matt4270 O okay thank you so much i will look on ebay for that first aid kit . but the shocks are the rear one is there any fixes that you might recommend? but i mean transmission oil and yeah i did try that and managed to check it lol

  • @ebh972 If the rear shocks are Boge Nivomat load leveling shocks, they ride pretty stiff. The KYB's are probably a good, reasonably priced solution.

  • @matt4270 ok thank you so you say i can get KYB's huh? i will go and look for them. but once again thank you so much man

  • What year Cadillac??? 1984??

  • Nice same as my 85 except mines gold but you mite wona check your turbo. I see the turbo but it sounds N/A whene i got mine the turbo was stoped by a pice of dirt and was fixed by a simple spine by my finger. And you are right it dosnt get any better than the 300 TD/

  • amazing i saw a 1984 300d with 348k miles and it ran like it had just rolled off the line. then again the man who owned it woul have samples of oil tested every change for bad stuff. im sure without the tests it would have been just the same. i love this car wish i could come and get it

  • great sound!

  • long live to mercedes w123

  • I've seen 300TDs with and without turbo diesel engines, so the T stands for something other than Turbo. More of them were sold with turbo diesels than in regular diesel form. So naturally, one would believe that the T in TD would mean TurboDiesel. Nice car. I've always loved this style for Mercedes-Benz.

  • @Seattlecarnut yes i love them too and think i have figured out that they are ALL turbos except for the 1980 models and earlier

  • @CerealMarshmallows I'm afraid I've never driven a Mercedes-Benz 300TD. It's too bad you didn't take the vehicle for a drive, that would've been fun.

  • @Seattlecarnut MAN I drove this car 300 miles than the nice people who bought it drove the car from san diego to vermont WOW even stayed in it now that would have been a BLAST!!!

  • @CerealMarshmallows Awesome!

  • @CerealMarshmallows (laughs) I mean for this video. It's too bad you didn't drive the Mercedes, show us viewers how well it drives.

  • @CerealMarshmallows Actually it was 1981 when Mercedes brought out the Turbo in the states. The T=stands for Transport/Touring D=Diesel and on the Turbo models it's TDT T=Turbo but Mercees never used the second T.

  • @CerealMarshmallows The T in the 200 / 240 and 300 TD models stands for Touring. So not necessarily every 300 TD in the US is a turbo diesel model.

  • @Seattlecarnut The T stands for "Transport and Touring", a.k.a wagon.

  • @Iceman2500 Exactly! See? Someone besides myself knows what the T stands for!

  • @Seattlecarnut

The T stands for Turnier. It means "station wagon" in German.

  • @Seattlecarnut

t means it is "wagon" not sedan

soo a turbodiesel wagon is called 300 T TD

  • @Seattlecarnut T stands for station model if i am not mistaking

  • @Seattlecarnut

    Hey Seattlecarnut,

The T in TD means Touring. All the wagons (and only the wagons) were Touring models. The D does indicate the diesel engine. And of course we all know what turbo means. This '84 car is the 123 body style. Mercedes also made the Touring wagon in a gasoline engine version post 1984, and it was designated as a TE. These were in the 124 body style. I will tell you friend, many folks think the T meant Turbo, but it is not so.

    BigBenzDiesel

    '83 300TD

  • @bigbenzdiesel Thank you! It's just what I've been trying to tell these people.

  • @Seattlecarnut The T is for "touring", euro speak for wagon.

  • @matt4270 Thank you. :) I know what the T stands for.

  • @matt4270 and E would stand for "Einspritzung", which is German for fuel injection

  • @Seattlecarnut the "T" in TD stands for touring.

  • @candywarhola1 and the D stands for diesel

  • @Seattlecarnut : Here you are, find it on Wikipedia: * C for Coupé * Lang (long-wheelbase) * T for Transport and Touring (estate/station wagon) * D for Diesel, * E for Einspritzung (fuel injection)

  • @Seattlecarnut

"TD" = "Touring Diesel" (AKA station Wagon)

  • @Seattlecarnut • D for Diesel,

    • E for Einspritzung (fuel injection)

    • Lang for Long Wheelbase

    • T for Transport and Tourism (estate/station wagon)

    • C for Coupé

  • @KarlGoth Well, thank you for the education!

  • @KarlGoth ur wrong

  • @Seattlecarnut The 'T' stands for T-Model meaning their wagon models. As such a diesel engined sedan would be a 300D.

  • I just got an '84 300DT Sedan, but the previous owner broke off the door trim and hood ornament. Do you know where I could get those replaced?

  • From what I've heard, the T in TD means Transport, or Touring. Nice looking car. I've always loved Mercedes-Benz of this style. The diesel engine sounds good. How about a drive? I'm glad it has a manual sunroof rather than an automatic sunroof.

  • @Seattlecarnut or it means turbo

  • @Seattlecarnut TD stands for Turbo Diesel

  • T is the designation for "touring" which is the wagon. D is for Diesel fuel.

A similar gas model would be a 300TE. Note here that the T is not turbo, but again "touring" and "E" is espritzen, for "gas fuel injection".

The 300TD with a turbo is referred to on paper as a 300TDT. Touring wagon/Diesel/ Turbo Charged.

TD does not mean "Turbo Diesel" .

  • @Renntag Thank you.

  • W123 availability (here, in the USA):

    240D - 1977 to 1983

    280E - 1977 to 1981

    280CE - 1978 to 1981

    300D Diesel - 1977 to 1981

    300D Turbo Diesel - 1982 to 1985

    300CD Diesel - 1978 to 1981

    300CD Turbo Diesel - 1982 to 1985

    300TD Diesel - 1979 to 1980

    300TD Turbo Diesel - 1981 to 1985

  • Thanks. useful stuff.

  • Nice car. There are very few of the 300TD Turbos in the UK, in fact I think I have the only one! The damage to the trim inside the drivers door where the rubber former for the piping is hanging out is really easy to fix, that part just glues on and can be easily replaced.

  • Maybe you should mention that this model is a W123 series - the most robust and reliable Mercedes EVER built. Many people wanting a W123 (and they are now an extremely sought after model) use this as the search criteria.

Pity you are not in the UK - the faults are cosmetic and would only cost around £100 to fix (parts still readily available for W123's) and you would have a car as good as new......if not better than the usual 'new' trash we see on English roads!

  • This car is in awesome condition!
