  • Sherlock, whats your favorite place to hook up ?

    Elementary my dear watson.

    0_o

  • the first holmes story appeared in serial form in 1887, a year before the ripper murders. holmes was not created as a response to actual murders but as conan-doyle's response to the detective stories of edgar allan poe, which he admired.

  • ahhh, amazing accent! :D

  • were do i buy it? and is it a dvd or book. thanks

  • ...ok, I'm not very smart...

can anibody tell me what does it means????

  • I really like this

  • Rather well done!

  • its not letting me do it

  • its not letting me watch it

  • its not letting me watch it

  • Its almost hard to believe sherlock holmes wasnt real, Holmes and Watson are known so well.

  • sherlock holmes is a fictional character not real he was inspired by someone who conan claimed to be his taecher and that man would be christofer bell a scientest who ad tought conan when he was young and his appreance just as sherloc holmes's also his deduction and observation is well as holmes's ..and watson was inspired by a real watson..dr.james watson one of the two who discovered the DNA which he was a freind of conan and conan made him his assit character to holmes..

  • omg good old classic of sherlock holmes unlike the scam of the new movie coming out

  • conan looks kindve japenese.

  • dude, this is what 'm talking about! make interesting videos on youtube! Not this stupid stuff im hearing about.I'm so subscribing to you!

  • Watson is vital, because he tells the story. Its not from Holmes point of view, but Watson!

  • There have been above a hunderd Sherlocks in al this time but the one and only real sherlock Holmes didn't stand up yet !!!

  • Have you read the books? Holmes often says to Watson that he finds his company of exceptional use, either to just hash things over for a case, or for protection or for his knowledge of medicine, but overall as a friend.

  • I must agree with SakuraMayonaka - But there is also the additional need for Dr. Watson as another source of information. In many stories, Holmes needs this extension to help him solve the mystery more quickly.

  • scary music!!

  • WEIRD!!!!

  • Lovely! Thank you for introducing me this video! (Hey! How did you manage to know my email adress?)

  • well done! chap well done! I am have a big interest in Victorain peroid.

  • Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce; perfect for the roles in my eyes. I've read that Sherlock Holmes was based off of a professor at the medical school Doyle attended. He, like Holmes, had an incredible eye for detail and mind for logic. The same basis is used for the series House.

  • watson was created because the stories needed a narrator that was not holmes. Watsons purpose was not only to narrate, to to admire holmes, to show the reader how amaing Holmes was and how he could solve any case. if holmes narrated the story then he would be admiring himself and become a completely selfless character. who wants to read about someone bragging about themselves ?^^

  • u are right but thats not what this video is asking . its asking if sherlock holmes could be real if maybe the man who wrote this "fictional character" can be making an alies name for a real person he can be watson and no one will no there can be a real man for an inspiration for sherlock holmes

  • thats because i was answering to a message someone had sent me. they asked me to reply as a comment on this page ^^

  • C'mon

Sherlock was based on a deductive friend Conan Doyle had, using a method similar to the alleged "science of deduction"

Watson was evidently an author avatar.

  • that was soo cool =)

  • thanks for sharing

  • Has anyone seen the russian Sherlock Holmes series? The actors playing Holmes and Watson are amazing! it's like they have come out of the book! the series were actually voted the best SH series by british people

  • Awesome...

Thanks for showing this to me

  • Interesting vid. Nice documentary style.

I'm a fan of the original Conan Doyle stories and I find that film versions are rarely as good as they are, although people keep trying!

  • thanks for sharing! that was cool!

  • when I was child, I thought that Sherlock Holmes and Watson had been really lived :)

(when my mum said that they weren't, I started crying xD )

    very interesting, thanks :D

  • thanks for sharing

  • pretty good

  • fajne :) dzieki :):P

  • thank you this was awsome

  • Very interesting.

    Thanks for sharing it.

  • Sweet thx for sharing this

i had NO clue they were doing a movie now!!

  • Cool, thanks for sharing this.

  • ty i might to a project on this ^^ :P

  • There's actually no part in any book where he says, "Elementary, my dear Watson".

  • thanks for sharing this video!

  • thanx for sharing this very intresting :D sherlock holmes is awesome cant wait to see the movie :D

  • wow

  • thanks for sharing this video w/ me =)

  • Very interesting.

    Thanks for recommending this.

  • cool

  • hmmmmm cool

  • know god

  • Hmmm cool. Seems okay.

  • Quite interesting.

  • I think it has merit. I remember a movie made in the mid-80's about Watson's great-great granddaughter thawing out a plague ridden holmes she found hidden on his estate.

  • cool

    x)

  • i liked it

  • Thanks for recommending this. It was a helpful background to the originals of the Sherlock Holmes. I used to read Sherlock Holmes when I was younger. :)

  • awesome, thanks for recommending me this

  • This seems a bit dull and self-evident stuff. I've read all the books, I honestly have little need for these kind of documents. I think.

  • can't sai i liked it to tell the truth

  • thx for vid! :D

  • Looks interesting. Might have to check that out. I'm pretty sure, though, we all know why Watson existed in the first place. He was a story telling device. Without him Holmes would have nobody to explain his wonderful ideas to. Those classic lines that we all know and love would have been just thoughts. How dull.

  • I have heard that the watson narrated stories are much better then the holmes narrated ones. I, personally have never read any of the holmes narrated ones. Although I also believe that watson served a purpose to holmes as someone to get a second opinion from. For example, in The Sign of the Four, watson was able to deduce that the victim was killed by a specific type of posion merely by feeling the corpse.

  • True, true, it would've been like Dracula, all writen in diaries, and that would kill the fun. Still, Watson is a good addition to Holmes, makes the reader feel he isnt the only one not having an idea what Holmes is doing.

  • interesting film, i'm going to get it.

  • this looks awesome!

  • nice video

  • In the clip of the new movie trailers we have seen Holmes fighting skills, his sexual skills and bad habits.

We have not seen in the trailers a demonstration of what millions of people all over the world admire Holmes for--his brains, his deduction.

  • This period of time in London is probably my favorite time in history.

  • Thus a new movie about him.

  • I'm definitely going to get that film, thank you for sending this video to me

  • That was one of the most read story of all times. I know I read and saw a lot of the stories.

  • thanks for the video

  • In an unrelated note. ohmanohmanohmanohman!

    I want this.

  • Somewhere in the Holmes stories isn't there a scene where Holmes and Watson first meet?

  • Yeah, in a Study in Scarlet, I think.

  • Indeed. Watson begins by relating his war experiences and then his search for a cheap apartment. Later his meeting with Holmes.

  • Somehow it makes sense. Watson, a man figthing in a war and being a doctor because he thinks doing so will benifit mankind.

Could he really not join up with Holmes, who must save England and the world from Dr. Moriarity?

  • there is, I remember reading they first met as roommates,

  • I think that the histories in parts the escribio Watson but do not create that all since well know the vivio mas that his very loved fellow sherlock holmes I at least can not a lot think but am reading the books of conan and if no it an leido advise them create that veran or tendran another mandera to think no mas can think until now

  • Lenard Nimoy (Spock) played Sherlock on stage deacades ago.

In my area, they were reportedly upset by "Quick Watson, the needle,"

  • thank you for sending me these and im dying to see Guy's Rithcie's movie :)

  • Watson wasn't Holmes' sidekick, he was a friend who helped Holmes out.

While he didn't have the imagination or the proper mindset to be a detective he was an intelligent guy (as a doctor he had to be), a loyal companion, good fighter, and a competent representative (as shown in the Hound of the Baskervilles).

Holmes mentions that while Watson had no genius of his own, He helped stimulate Holmes' genius. Perhaps explaining things to Watson help helped Holmes get this thoughts together.

  • I've also had an interesting thought about Watson for a while. If we assume that Watson actually wrote the stories, is it possible he downplayed himself to give his readers a surrogate?

We know, from Holmes' frequent complaints, that he gave his stories a "romantic" spin to pander to popular taste. Could it be that he also deliberately set himself up as a foil so that readers who couldn't follow Holmes' lines of thought would have the explanation?

  • @Jourell1

That's exactly what I believe too.

  • hem.... indeed Watson is somewhat neglected character... Great post!

  • Thank you for sending me this!

  • The auther created Sherlock Holmes as homage to Joseph Bell whom he studied under and was amazed at his skill at observations and forensics. Best charecter ever:)

  • Here is the thing, Watson is almost always the second smartest guy in the room. Watson is not just a sidekick and he has been portrayed as one for far too long.

Watson understands Holmes' babble. He's portrayed as being smarter than Scotland Yard and everyone who comes to Holmes looking for help.

  • @TheMechaLord Except when Holmes' brother is in the room... then Sherlok is the 2nd smartest ;)

  • The real reason Watson was around, besides the obvious romance with Holmes: Whenever a crime was solved we would need to know how Sherlock did it. It would come off a bit odd if he would explain how he figured it all out to himself.

  • you all realize in the books sherlock holmes never did once mention the words "elementary my dear watson" in the same sentence. he may have said those words but never once said them together.

  • Thanks, for sending this, I had no idea that people thought that Holmes actually existed!

  • Incredible man. There were actually a few truths in there I wasn't familiar with.

Thanks for the link, and keep up the good work.

  • Really interesting, i like it.

  • fantastic video mate love it...brightened up my history!

  • thanks for this video man!! it's quite interesting!

  • I always thought it was obvious why he chose watson. In addition to being a trustworthy friend and ally, watsons imperfect attempts to implement Holmes' logical methods and arrive at erroneous conclusions regarding a given case inspired Holmes toward the truth.

  • cool man... but I still like the classical Holmes rather than the one by Robert Downey Jr. Call it my personal preference haha.

  • me too... I love Robert Downey Jr and all, but he is NO sherlock holmes.

i'm not even satisfied with the old school movie holmes, i imagine someone with a much sharper face

  • lol... you'd mean his face gotta be so thin and sharp that he looks like he's been playing poker all life? Personally I think the old school movie looks are quite good...

  • wew

  • thanks for this video... really interesting...

  • Sherlock Holmes is and always will be the greatest detective of all time. Always clever and observant, able to resolve cases without even hitting the head. Amazing. And it is clear that behind every brilliant mind is your faithful servant .... Dr.Watson.

  • Wow, that was great. I also asked myself why did the famous detective choose the doctor as his assistance? Curious, huh?

  • mmm so elementary and interesting. lol

  • I've known since Middle school that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle created Holmes. :/

But I'm more interested in why Doyle thought that Holmes would need an assistant. I'm thinking about purchasing this.

  • that just might be interesting. it might be a very logical explanation/interpretation of the character of Watson.

    Worth a look.

  • Damned English! This was interesting, though..

  • EXCUSE ME!!!!!!!!

  • You're excused...

  • Kidding, specs. I was referring to them having all the nice things. Like the Italians and the Greeks. Lucky people

  • huh...who knew?

  • awesome :D :D

  • Awesome I cant belive people actually thought that they existed and did you narrate????

  • It doesn't really take someone with Holmes' talent of observation to learn a lot about Dr. Watson from the stories but this still looks like an absolutely fascinating look at a glossed over character.

  • thanx 4 sharing!!!! :D

    great stuff, this!!

  • recently baught the entire sherlock holmes series in a nice box set that includes all novels and short stories, im up to "a case of identity"

    Brilliant stuff i gotta say.

  • Doesn't matter how Watson may be: he has something special inside of him that gives him Sherlocks friendship. What it may be, it must be something unique since few people can say to be a friend of the great Sherlock Holmes!

  • thx for sharing

  • Thanks for sharing, this is a perspective of Watson I hadn't thought of before. Though, the same question could be asked of the television show Doctor Who, and why he always travels with a companion.

The answer is, of course, that we, as readers and viewers, need someone to identify with; someone who ISN'T this extraordinarily cunning and almost omniscient protagonist.

  • Thanks for sharing!! i actually believe my self, watson has to do something with Doyle.. In Fact my image of watson is doyle in person!

  • Thanks so much for sharing this! :)

    It's really interesting :D

  • lol, the new Watson looks coool, too. Different, but it could be good.

  • Thanks for sharing this! I wrote a very long exam paper about Watson, I'm fascinated by him :D

  • interesting.

  • Cool

  • Very interesting thanks for sharing this video

  • extremely interesting!!!

  • Nice video. good compilation and excellent narration.

  • Dr. Watson was an absolutely neccesary character-- he is desribed by all as a very sensible person... someone who approaches problems in a manner that I should think is very similar to the ways in which you and I would approach them. Because Holmes is such an unorthodox and enigmatic thinker, if Doyle should have made Holme's every thought available to his audience, we would seemingly be on the "correct path" to the solution from the beginning, and never be led astray by Doyle's false herrings.

  • Red* herrings

  • Dr. Watson is necessary for two things, in my perspective. Firstly he is a necessary "translator" of Holmes syllogistic and an indispensable character for the plot to run smoothly as "theroachksu" witfully pointed out.

  • Secondly he is also charged with the rather unflattering role of highlighting and reaffirming the ingenuity of his friend by making remarks and queries which Holmes easily despises off plus he acts as a propagator of the detectives achievements, something which a gentlemans upbringing would not allow to do him self...

  • nice:)

  • Of course he needed a sidekick, its not aqs effective to bounce ideas off yourself and a 2nd opinion can't always hurt. Seems like an elementry idea to have a buddy along for the ride...

  • Agree with the House theory comparison

  • jack the ripper eh? according to his "autobiography" my greatgrandfather saw him from his livingroom window chasing a young girl on a gloomy octobers night. creepy...

  • smooth man i love it ....i find the exact same taste in this video clip that i found in Sherlock Holmes books.....unlike the new upcoming Sherlock Holmes movie :@

  • woah!

  • nicely done

  • Really dig the video and love the idea of investigating the function of Watson. Can't wait to see the finished product.

  • Quite interesting indeed!

  • Quite interesting.

  • make my day video..

  • Exciting! Serlock Holmes is a man who liked thinking aloud, he liked to have perspective on things, but sometimes he'd get too caught up in his own theories, THIS is where Watson comes in. Watson helps him shoot down the ideas that are too far fetched and keeps Holmes grounded. At least that's how I see it. Much like House and Wilson in the show Dr House MD.

  • yeah, i agree with the holmes-watson and house-wilson comparison.

  • hurah for Dr.House

  • interesting documentary indeed. thx 4 sharing. ^.^

  • Cheers for the share. 5*

  • Nice done.:)

  • thx for sharing this (5stars-sub)

  • yay, thank you for sharing this

  • good BGM.

  • It would seem clear that Watson was based upon himself(Doyle). Probably a fiction surrogating on his need to have a hero in his life. Doyle was an escapist whos work featured both himself and his hero existing in a parallel pseudo duality.

  • ooh yay! i think watson usually gets a bum shake in movies so its nice to see a rly good look at him (i adore watson, haha)

  • Comment removed

  • Where is the rest?

  • hmmm....interesting thnx for sharing bro

  • Wow. This is what I'm talking about. I'm thrilled that a documentary is being done exclusively on Watson. I will definitely check this out when it's released.

  • Watson was the first person in the story. Was he a persona of the author? Conan Doyle was a very keen psychical researcher and had many debates with his Skeptical mate Houdini about it.

  • This looks like something to watch. Watson is greatly misunderstood if only seen on film. He was a war veteran, a surgeon and doctor, a successful writer and a crack shot. His I.Q. has been estimated at at least 130 and possibly higher. Remember Holmes was a genius and his I. Q. was near 200. Moriarty was a math genius yet Holmes managed to just undercut him so Holmes had to be smarter than the Prof. Holmes vakued Watson for his loyalty, his strength, his medical skills AND for his smarts.

  • Doyle said he recieved letters addressed to "Sherlock Holmes ...and his rather stupid friend, Dr. Watson."

  • Cool Story Bro
