Setting up is nothing. Anyone can copy a good aquascape they see on the internet. Or watch a half-useless video of how to place 2 rocks and 1 piece of wood over gravel and fill the tank with water. The maintenance of the aquascape is what makes it or breaks it. This part is normally skipped and leads to many people being disappointed in this hobby. Or keep going with mediocre results.

Love the technique he uses when he squeezes the newspaper out making all the ink and chemicals from the paper run in to the tank. That must be one of his biggest secrets on how to keep a healthy fish tank. :-)

there are other ways to prevent the water splashing and disturbing the aquascape, such as using a measuring cup and breaking the stream with your hand. i like the planter waterer idea though.

@microiguana the reason for the newspaper was to keep the gravel from washing all over the place when he poured the water in. And I'm pretty sure you can use any kind of paper, not just newspaper...

A tip. When filling your tank use some airline tubing and siphon the water into the tank through it. There is very little to zero disturbance in the "soil" rather than using newspaper, which may cause your decoratively placed landscaping to move about.

@MsGaladriela would be better than newspapers but probably still contaminated, as not all white paper is bleached with oxygen. given how slowly he filled in the water he could have poured it onto one of the stones, which would prevent any toxic stuff from getting into the nano. any gravel that might have been washed away could have been easily pushed back with his fingers. but then he probably has enough water conditioner in his tank so he doesn't need to worry about toxics.

This is an aquascape without fish in it, so there's no real point going on about the chemicals used in newspaper (there's no lead by the way, not for many years at least). If it was me I'd have just used a small diameter pipe to run the water into the tank slowly, but for this particular application newspaper is fine.

As for the design, for me it's far too cluttered. I liked the substrate and the stones, but way too much wood added. I would have stopped with the first piece. Needs lighting too.

I find your point being irrelevant to this discussion. You don't know if he boiled the wood or not, you can surely be aware about his own gravel not requiring rinsing.Is there lead in the paper? Did he was the tank with detergent , did he spit in it?I do not know but I am pretty sure the guy knows what he is doing, To you and all the cranky people being indignant about him not rinsing stuff and using certain product, why aren't you humble and write him a mail to ask him why?

The newspaper was a bad idea. Now the water contains a lot of inkt from it. This is very bad for any aquatic live. There are way better ways to fill your tank. Just pour the water on one of the big rocks.

Newspaper keeps the water from stirring up the dirt/sand... otherwise you get dirt/sand all over your plant leaves and murky water for a day or two. It's very irritating and sometimes hard to get it off the plants, depending on what kind of substrate your using. (Most of us learn this the hard way.)
