This trick actually works on all uploads since around March or something. Though when you upload a vid, it may take about an hour for it to become available. ;)

I don't understand why the youtube staff arranges it so that the 'higher quality' becomes the 'standard quality.' Why is it that we have to go through the trouble of editing the url to get decent quality videos on here when a little tweeking with the program could probably fix the whole situation? It doesn't make sense.

Uh... I´m sorry, but I checked a bit of who made the earliest of these vids (hack on youtube) and so on. And the earliest I found so far was 13th of March. So I really must ask the question: Why post when it was already posted? But well, knowing youtube´s slow responsetime I think I understand a bit. Thought you should know though. Many said the same thing, just at different days. But yes, it works and yes there´s the function as well. Although it isn´t customizable. :p

me too, but after checking other videos which contain "youtube in higher quality, i found out, that iGianMC is responsible for this.

Anyways it is cool that Captain S made a video too. This means many of his subscribers are informed and can also use the &fmt=18 code.

There is no need for this hack anymore, Just go to My Account ▼ / Video Playback Quality and you can set it to always show higher quality.

&fmt=6 is better, for the videos it works for. All videos don't work for either the 18 or the 6 qualities either. One main difference between &fmt=18 and &fmt=6 is that &fmt=6 plays them at the correct frames per second, while &fmt=18 keeps it at the default 30fps. &fmt=6 is also compressed less, so the quality is much better.

Also: &fmt=6 doesn't seem to work for this video, but does work for others, so just try it out if you think the quality could be better looking.

You can also do &fmt=6 for a differnt level of quality. It also only works if you uploaded it as a highquality wmv, for what ive been told. Because none of my videos appear in the high quality.

Your Mileage May Vary. A lot of my newer video game footage uploads are still RUINED by YouTube's compression, despite being in UNCOMPRESSED completely digital MiniDV format or MPEG-2 DVD. I'm really not looking forward to people asking me why a review of Sonic and the Secret Rings won't be posted on YouTube EVER. It's not because I'm turning my back on the fans, it's because YouTube's compression was programmed by stupid monkeys. They'll be hosted on revver and featured ELSEWHERE. Damn youtube
