If they speak english, why encode it? Also, why not just put up a star map and say broadcast/listen to here. They should know we can not escape our planet to harm them, so there is no fear of us attacking them for some time, so showing us there home is not an issue.

This is just probably the most successful trolling attempt in extraterrestrial research history. Think about it:

And the fact that the "telescope" was made in detail one year earlier just means that it is the same group of people who made the two images in the field.

@pdderek Binary is the simplest way to create a grid-based message like this. Black blocks are 1's and the background are 0's representing trampled and untrampled corn respectively. That is how SETI transmit the signal (the human one!) into space with a short pause at the end of each line. The ET one is quite comical and is obviously a fake. How these are being faked is another question!
