@moltoallegro19: A muted violin is a violin with a "sordina" applied. A "sordina" is a sort of ring shaped thing applied on the second and third chord, after the bridge. The effect is to dim easily the sound, other than change the sound: it appears more smooth.
Ah, now I understand. I have actually seen those things but never really noticed them or wondered what they are for (kind of embarrasing, being a violinist myself).
@moltoallegro19 It is a small usually rubber ring device that is attached to the bridge of the instrument, dampening vibrations and resulting in a "softer" sound - reduced the vibrations of the bridge.
