  • You're always looks so amazing...

I hope to meet you in the world, someday ;D

  • im useing this for my jazz audition haha going to 8th grade

  • Very nice drum slo, and sound! What do you have to say about some people that hate or disagree with 10" tom for jazz? How you tune this one? My jazz set has a 10" tom and I´m satisfied with that. (sorry about my english). Thanks and congratulations!

  • Those people can go jump off a cliff.

(Kidding!) I've never heard anybody diss a 10" tom for jazz, though 12" rack is obviously the standard (and I'm experimenting with that now). I come from the modern school of jazz - the likes of Eric Harland, Dave Weckl, Ludwig Afonso, and so on - where a 10" tom is not only acceptable, but even *preferred*. I've just always played a 10, so it's a non-issue. Keep doing what you're doing, man - your sound is YOUR sound and nobody else's. :D

  • @drumology2001 WOW! Thank you so much, man. Nice words, I´ll always remember that. Regards from Brazil.

  • What kind of set is that and how do you keep it sounding so nice?

  • The set was a loaner from a friend of mine; it's a Tama Imperialstar kit: 18" BD, 10" and 14" toms. The snare is a Yamaha 5.5" x 14" Steel snare. I don't use any of this gear anymore.

  • @drumology2001 I just saw that you may have responded to basically the same question in another post. Haha sorry to bother you and thanks for the info.

  • No problem! :D

  • What where is the rest of this??? dammit it was just getting interesting!!!!

  • Great! =) What ride is the left ride? Istanbul?

  • @Pianodrum95 Yeah, good eye! It's a 19" Istanbul Mehmet Legend Crash/Ride. I just finished replacing all my old cymbals with ones from Soultone, so I may do a little auction on eBay for some of the plates I have left over that are just sitting in the old cymbal bag. We'll see. ;)

  • awesome. next time, you should set up another camera for your foot if possible. =D

  • Going to do that on my future videos; I've got a Flip UltraHD in my hands as we speak, and I'm going to get another one here in the next few weeks so I can run high def multi-cam on my future videos. :D

  • @drumology2001 sweet! btw what kind of kits do you use?

  • In this clip I'm using a Tama Stagestar (now Imperialstar) that a friend of mine loaned to me for this gig. I am an endorser for Genesis Drums these days, so I play their stuff exclusively. You can check them out at genesisdrumco (dot) com.

  • dont listen to them, that china is groovy! great work!

  • wow i am blown away

  • Right on! Glad you liked it. :D

  • @drumology2001 yes i did man keep it up

  • wow. you rock dude. excellent work!

  • pleasantly surprised

    keep the hard work

  • This cat is burnin, excellent work!!

  • As the cat in the video, allow me to say thank you! :D

  • Brother, you want to use a China...you use that China! Good job!

  • Haha, thanks! :D

  • What kind of kit are you using? and is this china a Wuhan? i do enjoy the darkness to it..maybe a little overused but the solo was ill as fuck.

  • The kit in this video is a Tama Imperialstar (18" BD, 10" and 14" toms) and a Yamaha Steel snare (5.5" x 14"). And yes, the China is a Wuhan. I agree it was overused - you can see previous comments where I talk about why, but yeah - a bit much, even for my taste.

  • very cool..................

  • very soft the drumming, love it..

    XD Bonzo

  • the tecniche its good

    love the hhx sound

  • Me too! I am so impressed with Sabian. Great stuff. ;)

  • WOW! WOW! Nice! the sabian HHX's sound great and so do u!

  • Thank you! :D

  • great sounding china!

the rest of ur kit sounds good too... :)

    PS: AMAZING SOLO!!!

  • Thanks! Alot of people here on YouTube don't seem to like the china much. I think it's pretty cool. Something different, at least. I overused it on this night because I didn't have my normal crash that goes above the ride, but oh well. ;)

  • great man !!!

thanks for the inspiration... really.. thanks.... !!!!!

    peace

  • You're all kinds of welcome, my friend! Peace to you, too. :D

  • what set is this?

  • The one in this video is a Tama Imperialstar kit: 18" BD, 10" and 14" toms. The snare is a Yamaha 5.5" x 14" Steel snare.

  • ahhh, its nice, i like the tamas!

  • I love it~excellent !

  • So nice, but I'd like to hear a splash every now and then. That's just what I like to hear in latin/jazz solo's, a nice splashy sound ;D

  • Spectacular!

  • excellent solo man!!! i think the latin jazz is the best music to makes drum solos

  • I agree! I love soloing in latin...I always feel like the ideas keep flowing better and there is more I can do with the solo.

  • wow!!!!! great drumming......that was awesome...

  • Thanks! :D

  • spectacular

  • I'm loving the sound of the china! What kind is it? I may look into purchasing one.. along with that sweet ride.. the hi hats also sound tremendous! Rated and subscribed!

  • It's an 18" Wuhan China that I got online for about $40 a few years ago. You're about the only person who seems to like the sound of it (besides me), based on a lot of the comments I've gotten about it. :D

Thanks for the comment and the subscription!

  • your toms sound AWSOME! great sound!

  • Awesome, you are a great drummer! When you did practice alot, what did u practice? Are you a promusician?

  • Thank you for the compliment! I practiced a lot in high school and college because all my time was music-centered. I worked a lot on timing/metronome stuff, limb independence, polyrhythms, odd-meters, and solo ideas. Right now I am more about trying to be a better "pocket" player, and working on funk, R&B, and gospel. As for whether I am a pro musician, I would have to say yes, based on who I've played with and the fact that I get paid to drum. I'm no big shot, though - just a regional guy. :D

  • I am so inspired by this video. You are awesome. I would like to make a suggestion from one drummer to another: Replace your Wuhan China with an HHX O-Zone 18" Crash-it will further enhance the amazing sound you already have. Keep it up!!!

  • Thanks for the comment! Funny you should mention the O-Zone crash: I was at the music store the other day, and it tried one out and LOVED it! Maybe that'll be my next big drum purchase (I just dumped about $600 on some new gear, so I need to make some room in the budget again.) :D

No videos of you drumming on your page - bummer. I was hoping to return the kind words. ;)

  • Very Cool.

  • Fuck, this is just GREAT! I saw Omar Hakim - but Dude, you play like 5 of him at the same time ;-))

    Regards from German - Oli

  • Wow, I LOVE Omar Hakim, so I will take that as a high compliment! Thanks, man!

  • gotta say i haven't seen any better playing on youtube (besides the classics)

  • Wow, thank you! :D

  • While your solo was nothing AMAZING,

you have a really good feel.

And I love the foot ostinato, i use that one all the time.

    But overall, good job man.

  • Where are *your* videos, man? I want an example of what AMAZING drumming looks and sounds like!

All I saw were *other people's* videos on your channel page.

    :)

  • I didn't say I could play amazingly, nor did I say I had videos of me playing amazingly. I just made an honest observation that your playing was not amazing, had a really great feel, and that I liked the foot ostinato you used that was very samba-esque.

And if you do think that was AMAZING drumming then you need to learn some humility. But by no means was it bad.

  • Haha, I'm just messing with you, man. :)

Your observation was spot on: it's not anything to write home about at all. By no means do I think it was "amazing" playing. (In fact, the way you originally phrased your comment made it sound as if I had claimed it was amazing - not true.) I mean, it wasn't terrible, but it wasn't jaw dropping, either, right? Good, we agree. :)

Thank you for the comments on the feel and the foot ostinato. I appreciate them. Thanks for being a good sport, too. :D

  • Ummm...not sure. I guess I don't understand what you're asking; ghost notes don't have much to do with fast single strokes. I would say that working on Accent/Tap exercises would help you with ghost notes more than single stroke roll technique would. If you need guidance on this, drop me a message here on YT.

Also, I should amend my statement above: it should have read "You can only do a single stroke roll as fast as your SLOWEST hand." It didn't make sense the way I wrote it.

  • My key was getting my left hand in check, since it was weaker. You can only do a single stroke roll as fast as your fastest hand, so figure out which one is the weaker of the two and isolate it. Once it gets up to the speed of the better one, you'll find them evening out better without even having to think about it.

  • "Mint!"

  • Doublemint!

Oh wait...we're talking about gum, right? I'm confused. :)

  • Mint, as in perfect.

  • I understood you the first time...that was just my pathetic attempt at humor. Doesn't quite come across through a typed message, I spose. :)

  • good solo ! i like whuan sound , they are very economic

  • yeha man that good

  • godlike

  • very impressive! nice stuff!

  • 1:56 was sick beyond all reason. props!

  • how can i join to your channel?

and how do you learn abaout john bonham?

    thenks a lot

  • Just hit the little yellow button in the top right of the info box to subscribe, or go to my channel page by clicking "drumology2001" above and hit the Subscribe button there.

To learn about John Bonham, just Google him or type his name into the search box here on YouTube. I'm sure you'll find plenty. ;)

  • what did you do at 1:13?

    great drumming

  • First off, thanks for your comment. ;)

Second, it would be extremely hard to describe that lick in any sort of way - it's more something that has to be seen and described at the same time. The good news: I'm planning on shooting a few videos for the licks that I get asked about the most, in order to help explain them, and this lick is one of them.

Subscribe to my channel and as soon as I get a video up that explains it, you'll be among the first to know. ;)

  • im loving the groove coming back in through the solo, really skillfull

  • thats hot

  • ooooooo that was fuckin' awesome... thanks for share your music with all of us...

    peace

  • Here i watch another one of your solos and again it is awesome. Way to go man, You are my inspiration.

  • Aww, jeez...thanks! That was an awful nice comment. Glad I could help inspire you in some way. Thank you for your subscription to my channel, too - I'll be adding a few new videos soon!

  • hey, love the way you drum. i want to be a drummer that gigs, records etc, but is it easy to make a living? also could you give me an example of how much you make. eg. how much you get paid each gig you do and how many gigs can you get.

  • I don't make a living drumming, though that would be nice. My day job is as a web designer and multimedia developer. I would have to be making a LOT to just drum for a living (or have a sugar momma!). As for what I make per gig, it varies - and I probably should talk about it. Send me a message if you want to chat more and I'd be happy to give you some more details and helpful hints.

    Thanks for your comment! ;)

  • your fat

  • And...? What does my weight have to do with anything?

  • sad... like i said, thats hots, really is very good

  • bit too much china but nice solo :)

  • HA! I agree. In fact, my "Jumpin' Gemini" video was shot the same night and that is one of the big comments on that thread, as well. The backstory is that I forgot to bring another stand for my crash cymbal, so I didn't have it above my ride and china on the right-hand side like I normally do. So yeah - when I went to hit a crash and there was nothing there, I hit the china. And that, my friends, is the story of how there came to be so much China in this clip. ;)

  • It´s hard for me, after seeing many videos about Horacio el negro hernandez (my best latin drummer jazz), to appreciate other drummers. I know its a prejudice. But I like the way how you face your solo. congratulations men. It was very balanced with a confortable swing (sorry about my english I m spanish)

  • Thanks for the comment. I know what you mean - it's tough for me to watch El Negro and then 'like' what I did. However, he and I are in two different leagues, too, so I recognize that and try not to be too hard on myself. To be at that level takes many years, and being surrounded by world class players like Michel Camilo, Hilario Duran, Anthony Jackson, and more only helps.

But yeah - I know what you mean. ;)

  • Thanks!

  • what resonance heads do u use?

  • I just use Remo Clear Ambassadors on the resonant side. Single-ply heads. No big whoop.

  • ok, and on top remo ambassador coated, right?

  • You got it! I sometimes will swap out the Coasted A's for Fiberskyn 3's if they're availale at my local music store, but otherwise, I like the Coated A's on batter for jazz. On rock or funk gigs - especially one where the kit will be mic'd - I like the Pinstripes on batter side, Clear A's on resonant, but Coated A's work great for those genres, too, I find. They're a good all-around use kind of head.

  • nice solo

is that the hhx 20 inch evolution ride?

  • Yes, you got it! That's the one. Thanks for the comment.

  • interesting at 1.01, you dont usually see that much speed in a jazz solo. also, the china adds an odd but interesting taste to the whole thing.

    good work!

  • Yeah, you're right. This was one of those things where I walked the line between playing musically and playing to the visual appeal of the crowd. I felt like the crossovers would dazzle at this gig, and so I worked them in. Maybe not the most musical choice, granted, but people wouldn't stop asking about it afterwards, so that was cool. ;)

  • i love the style of ure drumming and the sound of ure toms wat heads do you use on the top and bottoms of ure toms? plz reply

  • Thanks for the comment! To answer your question: on this kit, it was just Remo Coated Ambassadors on the batter side, and Clear Ambassadors on the resonant side.

  • thanks for replying ive been trying to find a sound i like but never thought about using single ply heads so thank you

  • Yeah, I used to SWEAR by Remo's Pinstripes, but have been persuaded to other heads types and even maufacturer in recent years. I dig Evans' stuff as much as Remo's anymore, even though Remo is the standard-bearer.

  • ho notato che mettere molti videos su youtube tutti che simile ambiti di provenienza voi le avete registrate sulla stessa notte?

  • My Italian is a little rusty, but I believe the question above is asking if all my videos were filmed on the same night. In which case the answer is:

Ho 30 videos e ci sono solitamente 3 - 4 videos dalle ogni prestazioni che ho filmato. Vada alla mia scanalatura vedere la differenza nell'angolo e nello stile musicale.

(Translated: I have 30 videos, and there are usually 3 to 4 videos from the each performance I filmed. Go to my channel to see the difference in angle and musical style.)

  • that's pretty damn impressive, alot of the stuff you're doing reminds me of some stuff i've done, guess i never realized it was as jazzy as it is...

    amazing video, tight as hell...

  • Thanks again! If you're a drummer, you should post some videos, too - I'd love to see them. It's always nice to connect with other players and be inspired.

  • sei un grande from italy

  • "A six large one" is what AltaVista's BabelFish claims you just said. Not sure what that means, but again, I'll take it? ;)

  • oh, man. i was supposed to sleep early tonight. but that solo made me stay up a lil bit longer. here in the philippines, we have 1 word for this kind of musicality... IDOL!!! (pronounced eye-doh-L)!

  • Thanks, Tan! You're the best! Always with the kind words, this guy.

I'm honored that you hold me in such high regard, though I don't necessarily think that I am worth that kind of treatment. But thanks for spoiling me! ;)

  • Are you a big fan of jeff hammilton? I have a pair of his signature bosphorus hats.. they're nice for jazz.

  • Oh my word, are you kidding? I LOVE Hamilton. I just got to hang with him a few weeks ago at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Idaho. The guy is one of my heroes.

I love the Bosphorus sound - it is killin'. However, I am not terribly rich, so I don't own any...YET. Give me a year or two to raise the dough. ;)

The first thing I would buy is the big china from his signature line; that thing sounds SO GOOD. Frick...you can *ride* on it, it's that good.

  • Hey, what kind of heads are you using?

  • Remo Coated Ambassadors on batter side, Clear Ambassadors on resonant side for toms. Default Tama bass drum factory heads on the BD, and a Fiberskyn3 batter on the snare, Clear Ambassador on the resonant side.

Thanks for your question! Any others? ;)

  • A fine musician. A genuine talent. Composition, surprise, gee-whiz factor. Blazing speed, innovative chops. There's no telling how good you are. No doubt one of the best I've heard. WOW---just WOW!!!

  • Thank you SO MUCH! What a great compliment that was! Made my night - really!

I see you added this video as a favorite...I'm honored. Please: go check out my website if you haven't already, and watch for upcoming tour dates...I'll be starting a 100 date tour with the Aaron English Band this June, traveling all over the U.S. I'll probably be in your neighborhood at some point, so come check it out.

    Thanks again!

  • I agree. I typically have a 16" Sabian HHX Evolution crash to my right (above the china and ride), but I decided to try and think outside the box and challenge myself by taking it away, just to see how I could cope. Turns out it's better to have it, because I need something to offset that china on my right side for floor tom licks and stuff.

Then again, I could argue the thought of overusing a china...hell, Jeff Hamilton rides his all the time! ;)

  • You're Cookin' man!

  • Thanks! I wonder what I'm cooking...tamales, maybe? Mmmmm...that sounds good...I'll have that. ;)

  • i play metal and stuff like that but i LOVE jazz drumming SO much. amazing stuff dude i wanna learn this.

  • learn it man iamgine you can weld that into metal playing and youll be the band ass metal drummer

  • jazz techniques in metal are easily applied in the fills and such. some of the fills in jazz could sound very metal with the right speed and sound

  • awesome solo, I would like it better without the china though. At least not as often. Otherwise it's swingin.

  • Yeah, that china really cuts through everything, which is nice sometimes, but it definitely got overused here. I'd like to find a more mellow, washy, wet sounding china that had more tone than attack, but that's a search that will be months inthe making. ;)

    Thanks for the comment!

  • Very good! Killer crossovers, great feel and great time keeping with the hi-hat.

  • Thank you for both the compliments and the subscription - I appreciate it! Truth be told, I was going to do the crossovers thing at about the :38 mark in the video, but couldn't get my head wrapped around it and get my hands in order, so I bailed and came back to it about 20 seconds later when it felt a little better. ;)

Stay tuned for more videos to come soon!

  • i liked when you used one stick to increase the head pressure. ive done with my hand before, but never thought of using my stick. i'll have to steal that sometime!

  • Go for it! I can't remember who I saw do this first, but I *think* it was Jeff Hamilton. He does the finger/hand bend, too, but the stick bend works well and is more convenient and less awkward at faster tempos.

  • Awesome. I checked here from another video, cause you told me to. The china thing makes a lot more sense now. What size/company's drums are you using, and what heads do you have on them? I love your toms.

  • You can learn more about my setup(s) by going to my website (address above), but to be brief, the kit above is the Tama Stagestar kit: 18" BD, and 10" & 14" toms. Remo Coated A's batter side and Clear A's resonant side. BD has Tama's factory & logo heads. Snare is 14" Yamaha steel snare with Remo Fiberskyn3 batter side, Clear Ambassador resonant side.

    Hope this helps!

  • awesome groove, awesome solo, you rock bro :)!

  • Right on - thanks for the love! I checked out your page, too...nice work! I'd love to hear you on a kit with bottom resonant heads on the toms and good mics...you'd sound even better than you already do, man.

  • i love this style of drumming, nice job.

  • Thanks for the compliment...but, out of curiosity, what would you consider "this style of drumming"? Do you mean latin jazz drumming?

  • very nice

  • quite erskine, i like it. great videos my friend, cheers for the comments. ur lucky u can get this sound quality on a video camera, its frustrating as hell only being able to play my lecky. add us on myspace if u get a chance.

    /chrisbootdrums

  • Thanks! ;)

  • nice.
