I am about to buy the Hercules eCafe EX HD (ARM 8 - 800Mhz) with a special Ubuntu on it.

Do anyone has had this machine in his/her hands?

What the best laptop ARM platform with Ubuntu on it?

You are a bit wrong about ARM processors being originally intended just to power phones. Acorn Computers Ltd designed the ARM processor and associated chipset (VIDC, IOC) to be at the heart of their Archimedes personal computer.

Prior to the Archimedes, ARM was developed to actually bolt on to a BBC Microcomputer. The Archimedes desktop computer was succeeded by the RISC PC, which also ran RISC OS.

Although the Wintel platform killed the RISC PC, the ARM CPU is finally making a comeback on the desktop computer market. Not only Ubuntu, but Microsoft Windows 8.

Microsoft now have the .NET Micro Framework. It runs on amr and other SOC style hardware.

It has most of the things needed to make embedded devices, and even the WPF presentation layer.

i think they open sourced it because they are shitting themselsves :)

ubuntu's not a niche OS for geeks anymore. it's pretty much a full-featured, fully functional, desktop OS for the majority of desktop consumers... so 5.1 sound has to be coming soon..

@elnegrobembon 5.1 support is the ONLY thing that's keeping me from running Ubuntu on this PC. I still have it installed on my backup system however. Win 7 on here isn't the end of the world cause it's still the best OS Microsoft has ever released (imo)

yea, i've noticed that a lot of people that dual boot end up using win7 for a select few things after a while. like 5.1 sound, or for some specific program, or some random hardware support.

so yea, there's still room for improvement, but ubuntu's very nearly there.. for many casual pc users, ubuntu's perfect.

you're right about Win7 though. even though i dont use it much and i've had a few problems with it myself personally, overall i can say its a solid OS.

still ubuntu ftw tho. lol
