hey mate, nice review...was so close to buying until you mentioned the charging. Does the kit come with a plug charger u can plug into a normal 3 pin socket OR have u got to take your batteries out and charge them seperately on another device/charger?
theres a few out on the market that do external micro phones now, was looking at the gopro but do i want a bulk like that on the side of your helmet ?? na dont think so
@XRAH1127X tried the go pro in cold weather? battery life 1hr at best, got it pointed in the best position? you'll never know until you get home and upload the file. Good quality video yes, downsides aplenty.
@Henry1993bc depends where you tag it. It's constantly looping in (say) 10 minutes.
If you tag at 3 minutes in the loop then you have 3 minutes before and 7 after. If you tag at 1 minute it will save the previous loop too and the next 9 minutes (20 in total). Just as if you tagged it at 9 minutes and 20 seconds it would save the current tag and the next one because you're so close to the end. Make sense? Hope so.
@svengalie ahh, so for example it splits an hour into 6 portions?, if you tag say 6 minutes in, it will record the 4 minutes after and 6 minutes behind that tag you made 6 minutes in?
just wanted to ask i know you said it has a tag function but i was thinking of getting one for when i do long bike rides with my mates and we do actully want to watch the 4 hour fottage and edit it on the computer can we do that or can you only tag the film youve taken
Can you tell me what batteries you use with your pov hd as i have now bought 3 differant types of them and still struggle to get half a days use from one set , also which ever set i use they never show fully charged !, any advice .
been using the mini DVR3 kit from Dog cam for a few months and then the cable where it enters the cam developed a fault, due to stress, bending etc.. so i added a connector a few inches from the cam and fixed the loop on the mount so it wouldnt pull on the cam constanly.. Just got this model as I was after HD. Am wondering if there is an issue with this too.. or can you add a connector in the cable so that the first few inches of cable coming from the cam can be fixed to the mount... gd review

I got very professional time-lapse videos with camera! cool sunset videos!
So I took your advice and waited for Contour to come out with a new model with a mic jack on it. I got the Contour + that just came out. So far it's been pretty awesome!
Hi sven iv been looking for a nice helmet cam with external mic facility but im on a tight budget of about 100-125 pound do you recommend any many thanks Ben
bro tht would get destroyed easily, plus it doesnt look wide angle like the gopro is. tht looks cheap, and the cords would get in the way if u want to see wat u r filming. you can buy an lcd bacpac for the gopro cord free, i would go with the gopro srry bro
Question, port to put a external microphone. Can you have 1 on exhaust and one in your helmet? so when editing you can dull exhaust then speak and when your not speaking make it record your exhaust?
@MinnesotaNicePro Do they have a website I can order from? I thought you said you got the Go Pro? If you can get this POV HD for 300 I'll be very very interested.
@MinnesotaNicePro You got a POV HD for 300USD!? Holy crap. Where? I can only buy them from the UK and they want the equivalant of $888USD to sell and ship it to Ireland. I see I can order from the american site for only $600 USD though. Its tempting but still expensive.
@MinnesotaNicePro I just couldnt stand the embarrassment of wearing the Go Pro (even with a chest strap). Thats the main reason I wouldnt go for one. Have you tried putting two together to film in 3D? I'm thinking about doing that for lifelogging. Do you think it could be practical to wear two all day, say on my back?
@Aphradonis i know you can easily do that with 2 gopros, but anything is possible, it just seems like it would be pretty hard with this. The gopro has a nice cube shape making it easy to line up and clamp side by side lol
you think of a camera for my purpose. Question: can this vio pov be connected directly to the PC? can be connected to an external source of electricity? Because I do not need the battery it uses. Thank you very much!
@Manuirurzun The POV line (not just the HD but also the 1.5) has a "extension piece" that plugs into the battery compartment and allows you to to power the camera with 12V DC (car/bike battery). The unit will stay water proof!
Also the camera can be connected to a PC via USB, but it will showup as a storage device not as a camera, dunno if that is what you meant. Also the unit will not be water proof when USBis connected.
without compression, plus the other hand my camera has microphone input so I can record better audio. The downside is that it is not HD and it is a very large chamber size, and really only use it to capture video, or never use a mini dv tape, captured directly into the computer. I'm making a new booth, and was thinking of incorporating a new camera that captures in HD and that also is small and that let you record the audio . I would like to know if
First I want to congratulate you for the excellent review because it was very useful. I think you can help me find the right camera for what I need. It would be very important to me. Let me tell you what I do. I have a video booth in Argentina. It's a booth where people enter and record video messages (can be used both at weddings and in any event). To this day I'm using a sony mini dv, thanks to its FireWire port allows you to

i think Go Pro is a way better SPORT camera. Its not heavy. And I like the way you can hold it in your hand, and that pole you can tight the camera to.
@Br4wlerZ It all depends on what SPORT you are talking about. As motorbike rider I really don't want to hold a camera in my hand ;-) The ability to power the camera from the bike battery (while staying waterproof) and the remote control make the VIO POV.HD the better choice. So for things like motor sports I think the VIO is a very good choice.
The VIO also has the plus that you don't have to drive around town with a "lunchbox" on top of your helmet ;-)
I think its clear that this camera is best in class. Especially for motoblogging. The picture is great, but I've think the GoPro also has a great picture. Having the screen to see what your shooting is the best way to ensure your getting the right shot. Nothing like filming all day and then discovering your camera was pointing too low. I'd love to get an POV HD and use the GoPro for alternative prospective. Also love the AA batteries. I get tired of traveling with 4 different chargers.
great reviews!! love it! btw hope you dont mind but what low cost HD video camera would you recommend? Ive been looking at the GoPro hero but surely it cant be full 1080p. Im just look for a high quality camera. Thanks dude!
@dbzgt545 maybe if you would have written that in a normal way ppl would have given you an answer. But it looks like one of your adventures really did crush your skull.
long drunken night watching videos. Don't really care about correct spelling or going back and fixing what i wrote pretty easy to read and figure out what im asking. If your not to stu stu stu stu STUPID. It can be figured out, and i did crack my head open once or twice, got the scares to prove it lol.
My device is also back to x-sportscam and the new one is on his way.
I think its a software issue and VIO should work on that, plus give us there early in January promised update, because there still no loop function on this cam.
Your complaining all over the forums has compelled me to call you out for being a complete whinny d-bag. Sucks you had a problem but get over it. From what I can tell you're doing everything in your power to bash VIO. I'm considering buying a POV.HD Its a bit out of my price range but I might save up and buy one anyway just to spite you. Grow up! 40+ comments? Really? Do you have a job? Maybe get one.
Nope. Seeing your name pop up all over every forum or comment posting out there is very irritating. People like you both me. I just called a dealer in the UK and they've had like 4 people with the problem you keep complaining about. He also said they've replaced those 4 with new units same day. I'm going to buy one if I can find a place that has them in stock.
I have been been using the POV 1.5 for 2 years now for dirt track racing its great.
2 issues with the new camera they dont have protective lens covers as a accessory yet and with dirt track without these say goodbye to the lens, 1 lens cover comes with the unit so in the interim im using screen covers to protect the lens cover. the other issue is I keep getting camera head not detected, will try it in the weekend for real on the track and see if its an issue.
there is a new shell for the go pro, it is called the skeliton. you can use an external microphone with it but it is not water proof because there is holes in the side and back, that is all
09:20 "get's my thumbs up already.." Is that British slang for......
Anyway my only problem with this camera is that you have to pull the bottom off to get to the external mic plug. But i guess it does keep everything in there dry.
@LowLndr haha no i was just pissed because the GoPro HD ad was 5 mins. long!!!! If you click on the bottom one about the commercial its only 30 secs. Am I the only person seeing that??
@LowLndr I've been using 1080p30; 720p60 definitely needs more light. And I've been running it with noise reduction off (definitely makes a difference)and sharpening off if I'm going to edit the video afterwards.
The dynamic range bit is odd. From the specs, the VIO has 3 micron pixels to the GoPro's 2.2 so in theory I'd have expected it to have better low light performance. To me it looks like the contrast curve is too aggressive and they're clipping the blacks way too early.
@RINGO4LIFE Low light performance is very poor. The camera produces a completely black image at light levels where the GoPro (yes, I do own one) is still capable of producing a reasonable, if somewhat noisy, image. It's like VIO are trying to avoid noise in the shadows and have set the black point far too high, so anything dark just goes solid black.
@hieronomo What mode did you use ? There is a big difference between 720p@60 and 720p/1080p@30 the faster speed needs more light. Also it is probably best to disable all noise reduction and sharpening options because post processing on a PC will likely do a way better job.
I've had one of these cameras for a week. It has one huge problem that you can clearly see at 10:00 in this video: it can't deal with high contrast and just renders the shadows as black. You can't see anything in the shadow from the wall when Sven stops the bike, but once he's off the bike and looking downward the detail comes back. I'm seeing that issue in spades: shadows or dark colors appear solid black even if you up the exposure compensation to the max.
@hieronomo yes the dynamic range of VIO isn't that great. And that is something I don't really understand, their hardware (camerahead) should not be worse than the GoPro one. So I assume poor image processing software or a poor MPEG compressor that causes the problem. As an embedded software engineer myself I might be bit harder to please when it comes to software, but the VIO firmware feels a bit "rough" to me.
I can see a massive problem. I can't take this wakeboarding. I can't take this waterskiing. I can't take this Jetskiing. The idea that there is a 'black box' with a thick wire hanging from it would be disastrous in all these scenarios. Restriction of movement and the constant idea that there is another foreign object strapped to your body apart from the actual camera. I would call this a camera for bikers, and bikers only. If you want an all rounder, get the GoPro.
@Martena56 you are probably right. At least for me it is true, I want a camera that i can strap on my bike (or helmet) have it run the whole day, every day of my +2 week vacation, and use the loop function when I see something i liked. So I want something I can power from my bike and a remote to control it. So the VIO is just what I want.
But like with everything, use the right tool for the right job.
@Martena56 Plenty of people have used VIOs for that.
If you haven't got somewhere to attach the main unit, fair enough.
But on to a life preserver should be fine - have the cord run up your back on to your head.
The flat/rounded shape of the VIO main unit means I'd much prefer to have that attached to my body some where than I have the big square GoPro stuck to my head.
If you attach it so there's the right length of cable, there's no restriction of moment.
the pov hd is way better then the gopro , not only that offers more options, but when you wear it it does not seams you have a brick on your helmet, i like the gopro but you never know if you recording or not and how your recording looks like. the loop mode on the pov hd bothers me why the send a device that not working properly. the only reason people spend more money to get the pov hd is that loop mode, hope they fix it soon
I am piised off at this as i bought 2 of them at £1000 plus 4 32gb sd cards plus 2 battery chargers and batteries . total cost £1300 and it doesnt do what it says on the tin !!!!!!!!!!!!!
@svengalie How would you compare the POV HD to say the ContourHD?? I like both systems but cant decide which one to go for. Someone said the Pov has slightly better video, but then the small compact form of the Contour is pretty nice.
@lovelybikemate The original ones lasted about 30 minutes, before I was done playing with it they were empty :-) And now I can't test it anymore because it is going back to VIO for repair because I have the "Camera head not detected" problem, which VIO confirmed is a hardware error. So not having much luck.
Got the GoPro HD (and its fab), but just ordered this one too. I prefer the more streamline profile for a Helmet Camera, the GoPro is too bulky for my Cycle (bicycle) Helmet. I usually put the GoPro on the bike handlebars. Looking forward to getting this one as a proper Helmet Camera, suitable for a bicycle helmet.
hi just received 2 vio hds yesterday , awesome pieces of kit . Tell me what are the best batteries to use . I bought 2500 mah rechargables but only getting 2.5 hrs . Can you reccommend please

does the tag thing leave 5 minutes either side or the 10 minutes before
Henry1993bc 2 months ago
@Henry1993bc depends where you tag it. It's constantly looping in (say) 10 minutes.
If you tag at 3 minutes in the loop then you have 3 minutes before and 7 after. If you tag at 1 minute it will save the previous loop too and the next 9 minutes (20 in total). Just as if you tagged it at 9 minutes and 20 seconds it would save the current tag and the next one because you're so close to the end. Make sense? Hope so.

Have you tried putting two together to film in 3D? I'm thinking about doing that for lifelogging. Do you think it could be practical to wear two all day, say on my back?
Aphradonis 11 months ago 9
@Aphradonis that would be sweet but getting them aigned just right would be a pain i the ass
ccubsfan94 10 months ago
@Aphradonis i know you can easily do that with 2 gopros, but anything is possible, it just seems like it would be pretty hard with this. The gopro has a nice cube shape making it easy to line up and clamp side by side lol

you think of a camera for my purpose. Question: can this vio pov be connected directly to the PC? can be connected to an external source of electricity? Because I do not need the battery it uses. Thank you very much!
Manuirurzun 1 year ago

Br4wlerZ 1 year ago
@Br4wlerZ It all depends on what SPORT you are talking about. As motorbike rider I really don't want to hold a camera in my hand ;-) The ability to power the camera from the bike battery (while staying waterproof) and the remote control make the VIO POV.HD the better choice. So for things like motor sports I think the VIO is a very good choice.
The VIO also has the plus that you don't have to drive around town with a "lunchbox" on top of your helmet ;-)
LowLndr 1 year ago
The new firmware is out that brings the loop mode and fixes several bugs.
On the VIO site under support -> pov_hd_firmware_upgrade
I would say, I can't try it because my camera is in the mail to get replaced, but gfylowlndr doesn't allow me to complain about that ;-)

Thanks for the review. I'm going to be making some self-defense shooting training videos, and looking on what's out there for the POV.
I've also thought your videos on the wearable cameras were good. I use them in my decision to buy and wear one while I'm patrolling (police officer).

Loved the end footage.
jimrc1984 1 year ago
I think its clear that this camera is best in class. Especially for motoblogging. The picture is great, but I've think the GoPro also has a great picture. Having the screen to see what your shooting is the best way to ensure your getting the right shot. Nothing like filming all day and then discovering your camera was pointing too low. I'd love to get an POV HD and use the GoPro for alternative prospective. Also love the AA batteries. I get tired of traveling with 4 different chargers.

I bought the vio pov HD and I'm amazed by the awesome quality of this cam.
Little downside is that there is no loop and loop & forward mode installed on this device to record your movies.
Already contacted VIO and they are still working on the software and promising a update soon ??
So when you buy the VIO pov HD you can only record and take photo's Tagging isn't working yet.
hansdegebruiker 1 year ago
there is a new shell for the go pro, it is called the skeliton. you can use an external microphone with it but it is not water proof because there is holes in the side and back, that is all

09:20 "get's my thumbs up already.." Is that British slang for......
Anyway my only problem with this camera is that you have to pull the bottom off to get to the external mic plug. But i guess it does keep everything in there dry.

To me it looks like the contrast curve is too aggressive and they're clipping the blacks way too early.
hieronomo 1 year ago
@RINGO4LIFE Low light performance is very poor. The camera produces a completely black image at light levels where the GoPro (yes, I do own one) is still capable of producing a reasonable, if somewhat noisy, image. It's like VIO are trying to avoid noise in the shadows and have set the black point far too high, so anything dark just goes solid black.
hieronomo 1 year ago
@hieronomo What mode did you use ? There is a big difference between 720p@60 and 720p/1080p@30 the faster speed needs more light. Also it is probably best to disable all noise reduction and sharpening options because post processing on a PC will likely do a way better job.
LowLndr 1 year ago
I've had one of these cameras for a week. It has one huge problem that you can clearly see at 10:00 in this video: it can't deal with high contrast and just renders the shadows as black. You can't see anything in the shadow from the wall when Sven stops the bike, but once he's off the bike and looking downward the detail comes back. I'm seeing that issue in spades: shadows or dark colors appear solid black even if you up the exposure compensation to the max.
hieronomo 1 year ago
@hieronomo yes the dynamic range of VIO isn't that great. And that is something I don't really understand, their hardware (camerahead) should not be worse than the GoPro one. So I assume poor image processing software or a poor MPEG compressor that causes the problem. As an embedded software engineer myself I might be bit harder to please when it comes to software, but the VIO firmware feels a bit "rough" to me.
LowLndr 1 year ago
I can see a massive problem. I can't take this wakeboarding. I can't take this waterskiing. I can't take this Jetskiing. The idea that there is a 'black box' with a thick wire hanging from it would be disastrous in all these scenarios. Restriction of movement and the constant idea that there is another foreign object strapped to your body apart from the actual camera. I would call this a camera for bikers, and bikers only. If you want an all rounder, get the GoPro.
Martena56 1 year ago 24
@Martena56 you are probably right. At least for me it is true, I want a camera that i can strap on my bike (or helmet) have it run the whole day, every day of my +2 week vacation, and use the loop function when I see something i liked. So I want something I can power from my bike and a remote to control it. So the VIO is just what I want.
But like with everything, use the right tool for the right job.
LowLndr 1 year ago
@Martena56 Plenty of people have used VIOs for that.
If you haven't got somewhere to attach the main unit, fair enough.
But on to a life preserver should be fine - have the cord run up your back on to your head.
The flat/rounded shape of the VIO main unit means I'd much prefer to have that attached to my body some where than I have the big square GoPro stuck to my head.
If you attach it so there's the right length of cable, there's no restriction of moment.

@Martena56 i know this is late but would you know of something similar to the GoPro but without the fisheye effect?

the pov hd is way better then the gopro , not only that offers more options, but when you wear it it does not seams you have a brick on your helmet, i like the gopro but you never know if you recording or not and how your recording looks like. the loop mode on the pov hd bothers me why the send a device that not working properly. the only reason people spend more money to get the pov hd is that loop mode, hope they fix it soon

@11039078 comparing video quality? I'd say there's not much in it. Both good quality

@lovelybikemate The original ones lasted about 30 minutes, before I was done playing with it they were empty :-) And now I can't test it anymore because it is going back to VIO for repair because I have the "Camera head not detected" problem, which VIO confirmed is a hardware error.
